Biggest let downs

What would be some fighters you can think of who where up and coming contenders who seemed like they had all of the tools to rise to the top and pretty much had things on cruise control with a title shot in sight only to be derailed and have their career set back and basicaly have to stat from square one. Maybe it was in a tune up fight against an opponent they might have been looking past. Or simply a fight they were supposed to win.

Mark Kaylor lost to Buster Drayton
Frank Fletcher lost to Wilford Scypion
James Scott lost to Jerry Martin
Robin Blake lost to Tyrone Crawley
Bobby Czyz lost to Mustapha Hamsho

Kaylor - Drayton is a good call. On the same bill, Bonecrusher KO'd Bruno in what was supposed to be a safe fight for Big Frank.

Duff / Lawless fecked up badly that night.

Good call on Czyz - Hamsho also.
Czyz was real hyped there for a while.
He was in that group called tommorows champions along with I think Davey Moore and Tony Ayala I could be wrong . It was a group of fighters being showcased on NBC regularly. Someone will probably know who the exact group was.
Anyway, Hamsho , who was a rough customer , a very tough infighter took Czyz to school.

I never liked Hamsho, always thought he was dirty. Czyz and Wilfred Benitez both got roughed up and intimidated by him in route to one sided defeats. In Czyz's case though, he went on to be a much better fighter afterwards.

Iwas at the Hagler - Hamsho fight in Rosemont .
I dont think Marvin liked Hamsho too much either.

I liked Hagler v Hamsho II better. Hamsho tried a headbutt or two, and so Hagler finished it early. I could be wrong, but at the time, I don't think Hamsho had ever been on the canvas as a pro.

I think your right on all of those guys plus Aex Ramos. He might have been the most hyped of them all. I know they showed alot of his fights. His career started off okay and then all of a sudden went into a freefall, even before he stepped up his leavel of competition.

Anyone remember Errol Christie? He looked great. Got KO'd by a journeyman LHW but the TV people managed to talk that one away. He then lost to Kaylor. It's a shame because Christie, even with his glass jaw exposed, was clearly an exciting fighter.

The other Brit worth bringin up in a thread like this is Kirk Laing.

Courage Tshabalala vs Some guy that KO'ed him.

I don't think Marvin Hagler liked anyone too much.

Tyson -v Boneclutcher Smith! :o

Smith was totally spineless that night.

I bet he didn't hold his wife the way he held Tyson that night! :o

The sad thing is that he proved he could hurt Tyson if he tried.

He hurt Tyson more than anyone ever did in the dying seconds of the fight, with a huge overhand Right & Tyson finished the fight on unsteady legs.

Who knows what would have happened, had he had the balls to fight back sooner.

The Bonecrusher fought the same way against Marvis Frazier. He fought reminisent of the way the heaveyweights of today fight.

Gerry Cooney post Holmes.
He fought a good fight vs. a great champ. He had nothing to be ashamed of. He gave it a good go.
His inactivity after that fight was dissapointing, I guess he had some personal issues but it was too bad that he didnt get back in there and fight again sooner.
