From the BFI website -
Documentary about Herol "Bomber" Graham, Sheffield Boxer and his trainer Brendan Ingle, and about their preparations for last November's big fight for Herol, against Kenny Bristol for the Commonwealth light-middleweight title.

I think I remember when it was originally shown. It has Herol going round to working men's clubs and challenging guys to try and hit him whilst his hands are behind his back. Also, if this is the same prog, you'll see a bright as a button and very young Naz following Herol around like a shadow.
I have never seen that prog since and will look forward to watching again.

BTW, i'll be recording this and posting it to a newsgroup in case anybody misses it.

Are they all repeats of the one doc or is it a new episode each time?

Repeats I'd guess.
Yes think this is with a very young Naz, I remember seeing this tiny boxer jumping around with huge gloves, and Brendan saying he was gonna be the next Ali etc etc..

It was very good, especiallly touching at the end when Bomber and Ingle made up in a cafe.
It's a shame bomber never made it all the way he was an exeptional talent in a lot of ways, his concentration was a bit suspect though, that was his achilles heel.

It was a great peice of TV and I really enjoyed watching it. Did anyone here recognise any familuar faces in the Gym?
It was nice to see Bomber and Ingle shake hands at the end but there still seemed to be an atmosphere between them, hard to judge via the TV though I guess.

those things take time though joe, you cant fall out for 15 years and become best mates again in ten minutes, but like chairman mao said - every journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
but it was good to see two fella`s who were obviously good mates in the past and went through a lot together start talking again.
re- bomber and his fight with mccallum, i havent seen the fight in donkeys but i seem to recall bomber was deducted a point for a `hip throw` which seemed harsh at the time to me, and i honestly thought he did enough to win that fight.

So did I Headhunter, I thought Bomber won.
Graham vs Brewer was one of the saddest fights I can remember.... so fecking close. All he needed to do was take a knee.
But the fight was close on the cards (it shouldn't have been), so it was possibly better he lost like that than shafted.

I must admit that I was shocked at Brendan Ingle, some of his comments could be construed as racist. Maybe a sign of the times?

yeah mate as bad as it seems now it was just those times, what ingle said was pretty tame compared to what even was considered light entertainment in those days.
remember that show `love thy neighbour` or something like that!
not everything was better in the old days.......
p.s thanks for the original heads up ste, i enjoyed that docu. and the little follow up.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the signing from BBC 4. I taped it last night, but I wouldn't have minded seeing it on a full screen.
No disrespect to those who require sign language, just wandering if the option is available to remove the signing?

I remember jumping up and down like a yo-yo when Bomber put Brewer down. I thought "is he gonna finally do it all these years later?". Alas, no.
Truly gifted he was. Brendan did a great job with him, and he really was so close against Jackson. Again, it was not to be.
It'll take more than a meeting in a cafe to sort out 15 years of silence. But at least it's a start.

i think graham edges the mccallum fight as well. it is very close though and u couldn't really complain too hard with it. the pt deduction is a joke really.
the brewer stoppage was heartbreaking wasn't it.

he was sitting on the rope strand when the ref jumped in, but he just stopped it instead of taking up a count. :(

I thought Bomber edged the McCallum fight as well. What a joke to dock him a point for spinning. Especially with some of the fouling you see now that goes unchecked.
Was at ther Brewer fight just to see Graham in person. What a perfect straight left to dump Brewer the first time. Not much of a crowd at the time, but a few Brits and myself were yelling loud for Herol. Always thought it was a shame the rope held him up. If he could have taken that knee. As mentioned above though the judges were not doing Herol any favors in there scoring. It looked like he was on his way to being shafted.

by the time of the stoppage in the brewer fight i thought bomber was seriously running out of gas anyway, i think it was just a matter of time though i admittedly cant remember how long was left in the fight off the top of my head.
though bomber rolled back the years in that little indian summer he had at the end of his career he was just a shadow of his former self imo.
still he had enough to produce little cameo`s like the paz fight.
grahams a very under rated fighter imo.

Now, I cannot say I remember alot of his absolute pomp, but from what I can remember and what I have spoken to people who could remember, but that Chris Johnson win is definately up there amongst his finest performances.
It was a master class.
The documentary stated that Bomber was up on two of the cards in the Brewer fight... I always thought the cards were dead level at the time of the stoppage. Bomber was starting to let Brewer get back into it at the time of the stoppage - but I don't think he was seriously gassing, he seemed to be in control of things and was even having a good round 10.
I had Bomber 3 rounds up, but Brewer was catching.

i watched that fight the other day.
disagree that graham was gassing.
he was having a good spell in the 10th rd and just got tagged.

brewer followed up well and in came the ref.

As for the original documentary, I don't think it would ever be reshown on terrestial TV again.
The Sauna scene was certainly an odd choice to include by the editors.

he was doing okay and just got tagged?
i havent watched it since it actually happened so my memory must be way off.
that makes it even more of a shame, he should have taken a knee.
