There's a lot of cases of boxers as actors. For example, Two Ton Galento as a hood in ON THE WATERFRONT. Eddie Mustafa playing one of Lamotta's opponents in RAGING BULL. Muhammad Ali playing (with?) himself in THE GREATEST. Japanese director Shinya Tsukamoto's brother Koji - an amateur boxer who got seriously beaten up - in TOKY FIST. Former undisputed junior middle champ Koichi Wajima in the same film as a boxing coach.


For me, the most compelling fighter turned actor was JIMMY FLINT. Anyone ever hear of him? He was in that extraordinary documentary called FIGHTERS (directed by Ron Peck). He was also in THE KRAYS. Real malevolent looking bloke. He was in an other film, called FREE SPIRITS, where he had a more substantial role as a struggling boxer.

But has anyone seen REAL MONEY? I want to get hold of this. Mark Tibbs is in it, as well. Some kind of boxing/gangster drama.

Jimmy Flint - AKA the Wapping Assassin - was a much feared puncher with a real mean streak. Most of his opponents were left out cold.

I hear he's a excellent actor these days. That film is a TV movie and rights are held by the BFI. They're pretty helpful there, and if you phone them up and speak to rights & info dept, they might tell you which tv station is going to screen it.

Been mentioned a million times before, Gary Stretch in dead mans shoes. Very good, very good.

Real Money is FANTASTIC film, apparently the plot was developed by the actors, most of whom were boxing people. Jimmy Flint is superb in it a real natural I thought, and it's a shame that the film didn't get more exposure. It was shown really late at night on channel 4 when I saw it.

Thanks for the info mate, I'm glad someone replied to this. He's a compelling person onscreen, is Flint. I'm hoping the BFI bring out these films on DVD - they also have the rights to FIGHTERS (docu with Flint, Kaylor, Bradley Stone, Mark Tibbs). FIGHTERS was given a substandard review in BM in the mid '90s, but Harry Mullan gave it its dues in the once great BOXING NEWS!

Fighters was a great documentary, though hard to watch now because of the Bradley Stone footage.
Flint does come across as one incredibly mean/hard man...

there's a fil called cauliflower cupids with LaMotta and Basilio (I think) and a few others, anybody ever seen it?

I saw Abe Simon in "Never Love a Stranger" a few weeks back...as you might imagine he played a "mob heavy"

Saw "Dead Man's Shoes" the other night, Gary Stretch was good in that.

Also one of his old opponents Vito Antuofermo was in Godfather III, which by the way is one of the most boring and tedious films ever!!

I didn't mind GODFATHER 3. Very slow, sober, melancholy film experience, but then it should be with the theme of Corleone losing his grip/family.

Hagler was in some Italian action movies in the '80s/90s. INDIO and INDIO 2. Not seen them, however.

By all accounts the Italian films Hagler has starred in are your typical Italian-Rambo choppy socky shlock, featuring the Bald One running around jungles with a machine gun and blowing away various bad guys for 2 hours or so.

Stretch is pretty convincing as the loonie small town thug. Paddy Considine as usual is very convincing as a complete loon. Does he ever play anything else?

tex cobb is in Ace VEntura, Fletch Lives and some TV series too

Despite his ruthless streak as an amateur, Jimmy Flint is a lovely man. Used to be down the Peacock a lot

Cobb is in one of the Police academy films as well... number 4 i think, which also features a young Tony Hawk

Scott Dixon was Pitt's body double...also Adam FOgerty (Gorgeous George) and MIckey cantwell were in Snatch.

There was a documentry a few years ago about Wayne McCullough , it followed him for a couple of years, when he moved to America and up to his title win in Japan i think.
It was called 'Down the Street of Dreams'

Also check out 'Undefeated' its a film by John Leguizamo, who directs, acts and wrote it. has some boxers in it as well including Michael Olajide Jr.
