Mitchell-Ashie tonight

Starting this with a bet in mind more than the fight itself, but did anyone see Ashie-Watson earlier this year? Were you able to guage what Ashie's chin was like? Watson and Mitchell arn't the same I know, but is Ashie a tough sob who'll take Mitchell to a decision despite the glaring talent and experience gap?

complete mismatch, Ashie has beaten no-one to get this title shot.
Blow-out win for Mitchell.

Cheers Topper,
Yes it's a total mismatch, but I'm wondering whether Ashie might be the sort who'll stick around until the final bell. Someone's offerred me 4/1 the Mitchell pts win, and I'm slightly tempted by it. The problem is, he's had two losses by pts, but whether he'd be able to do the same against Kevin, I don't know!

I think people are reading to much into the showing against Watson, who is a good boxer , but not a puncher. So Ashie could get inside without worrying to much about getting hurt, he won't be able to do that against Mitchell, who can punch.

Mitchell can punch? Since when?

Maybe not world class punch, but he hits sharp and fast, will do a number on Ashie, and Mitchell has good fitness so carries power into the later rounds.
I've been critical of Mitchell in the past, but he's started listening to the advice and has looked to improve his flaws.
I know he's not popular on here, but he should be given praise when its due.

I thought the fight was easy to score.... but none of the judges agreed. I thought it was an 7-5 Mitchell. I thought Ashie won the 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 clear.

I agree Ashie did win those rounds clear. Mitchell won first 6 clear as well. Mcguigan just called Mitchell world class!

Mitchell has not improved his faults AT ALL. The single biggest flaw is dropping his left and getting belted with right hands. It happens so often its insane. His opponents could close their eyes and still land it on him. The first puncher he faces its over for Mitchell. Even the first "good puncher". He gets hit so often with it.
LOL @ Barry McGuigan, "he's world class!". Whe are they trying to kid? From day 1 on Sky and now on ITV its like Fwank has told them to hype this kid as much as possible. Stop trying to deceive the public.

Yes far from a blow out, before the fight I had a feeling Mitchell was going to get KO'd and then came the 7th round but he proved his chin. Hard fight against a very tough Ashie who can pop. I think Mitchell still has to improve before stepping up to Euro class.

Oh and Frank talking up a super fight between Khan and Mitchell, one that would have all the world interested...gimme a break!

Ashie never thought anyone of note, I bet they thought Mictchell would knock him out. I think Ricky Burns would beat mitchell, Mitchell will win a WBU world title in the next year cant see him going British and european route.

Any one need reminding how tough they come out of Ghana? Hardly ever see their export fighters stopped these days.
Mitchell boxed well, until he ran out of steam a bit later on. It was only then, that he really started to get hit with right hands. But yes he needs to work on that. But I get the impression he's punching hard enough, just the African had a good chin.
Mitchell showed he's got a good chin and the heart for a battle too.

Mitchell did take it well, but he not going to progress to genuine world level.

opponent record is very poor and he is not a puncher...
kevin tried so hard to knock him out but failed.
I think poor perfermance by Kevin Mitchel. I think Amir woud beat Ashie round 5.

I did'nt see the fight, but the world class comment makes me wish I did!!!
Please Barry, don't keep showing yourself up mate.Thewre is only so many times I can watch the fight against Pedroza to remind myself that you are a legend.
Mitchell is euro level at best.
Sometimes top amateurs just don't make top pro's I'am afraid...

After 6 Rounds, I was going to make a thread basically saying I bet the John Murray fans are a bit quiter today. I agree with Barry, that was the best half a fight I have seen from Mitchell. Against a strong, ambitious fighter - albeit limited.
Last half though and Mitchell was close to losing the fight. He was tired, hurt (although displayed a good chin) and I did think had Ashie followed up an attack in the tenth (which Mitchell did a funny dance) he might have put Mitchell down.
I still think give him a bit more time. I do think there is some potential there that could be nutured into a world class fighter. Concentration, Defence (when tired especially) and stamina need some work - but he is still a baby.
More convinced now he would beat Murray than I was before tonight.... alot of ticked boxes IMO. Although for Barry to suggest he is world class now, and that was a world class performance was way off the mark.

I had it a bit closer than the judges (7-5) and I agree with leforge & Lefthookhappy19 that the first real puncher that Mitchell fights could be very interesting. Every recent Mitchell fight that I've seen he's been getting hit with the right hand over and over again, it's a KO waiting to happen although his chin does seem decent enough

Im very confident Murray would beat Mitchell. I can't imagine Mitchell fighting some of the tougher guys that Murray has had. THIS WAS NOT supposed to be a tough fight for Kev. This guy was brought in to get beat up blown out. Murray doesn't look as flash, but he doesn't have the huge gaping holes that Mitchell has. And Mitchell vs Johannsen would be a massacre. They will NEVER make that fight.
Kev has no defence and little power. Just remember the level he's fighting at. Anyone who can punch even a little destroys the journeymen Kev's been fighting. His defence is as bad as ever. Look how crude that guy was, yet he still landed plenty.
Im harsh on Mitchell because of the huge preferential treatment he's got from day 1. Everything they tell me over and over again I just don't see it. Also, he left a bad early impression by acting like a dick.

Thought Kevin boxed superbly to orders off the back foot for the majority of an excellent bout.
He showed real ability, skill, speed, stanima, a cracking chin, heart, determination and genuine entertainment value.
All this In a packed sweltering York Hall, the place was jammed packed and absolutely sweltering for Mitchell's contest. It was hot enough for Ashie to feel at home.
I can not believe the crticism of the opponent, any knowledgable boxing fan could see he was a quality African operator. You cannot judge him by his Boxrec record. Accra Ghana is a world renowned hotbed of boxing where the majority of shows go completely unrecorded. A 0-0-0 record on Accra fighter is grossly misleading in a city where fighters box regularly for survival. Fighters should be judged on viewing his performances in the ring rather than inaccurate statistics.
The Martin Watson fight was not not televised and only over 6 rounds. Watson won 58-56 with a point deduction in his favour on his home turf. Mitchell arguably won the all of the first 6 rounds! Not forgetting Ashie had been in training for a full 12 rounder with Alex Arthur and Watson is a full lightweight and in most peoples opinion beat current British champion Lee Meager.
I also don't understand the constant praise of Murray's opposition. Who has he has he really beaten to warrant such praise?? Who Nacho Mendoza? He would have lost that one under British rules. Ivan Fioretta beat Mendoza. The same Fioretta was well beaten on points in his own home town by Karim Chakim recently. Chakim was beat up and played with by Mitchell in comparison.
Mounir Gubbas was also beaten up and outclassed by Mitchell, who has since gone onto give British fighters nightmares as well as pushing Murray all the way and close to beating him.
Murray is taylor made for Mitchell and just can not see any department in which Murray is superior??
Again last night's performance reinforces my believe that this kid has all the tools and attributes to go a long long way in this sport. One or two things to work on but Kevin is still learning and improving at pace!
