I guy at my father's work is trying to sell a pair of gloves he says were the ones Ali KOed Liston with in Lewiston, Maine. He also says they are autographed by Ali.
The asking price is $800,000.
I told my dad that there is no way they are anywhere near worth that much money.
What do you all think they should be priced at?

I have the same exact pair that Ali used to KO Liston with as well...except mine are only 500 bucks....
...see how no proof of autheticity works?

Them gloves should be worth a trillion dollars .
They can knock people out by just barely glancing them.
In fact the breeze eminating from those gloves can ko ferocious heavyweights.

If they are truly the gloves that KO'd Liston they will still be saturated with noxious fumes of Liston's fear. Better send them to detox.

Harry Shaffer would be able to give anyone the correct price range that something of that nature would be worth, but unless the person has papers, or some other very strong form of verification that they were the actual gloves used in the Ali-Liston fight, then they are pretty much worthless as the only kind of verification would be the persons word, which in a lot of instances is just plain bunk, but I doubt very much that even the legit pair would be worth $800,000...I would guess more like $25,000 to $50,000 tops, but then again, I'm no memorabilia dealer! I sent Harry an e-mail asking about it, so he will be able to shead some light on it.

Harry stated that he was not an expert on Ali material, though in my opinion he is very modest...anyway he said that he is not really involved with Ali memorabilia due to the vastly large amount of forgeries and fakes which are out there, which I suspected this, but he did say that he knew about an auction where the gloves worn by Ali in his bout with Henry Cooper sold for $53,000, so I would imagine that the actual gloves for either Liston is around the same price...maybe one could add $10,000 for the total to be around $65,000, but $800,000...not a chance.
Hell, it's highly unlikely that even the gloves worn by Jack Johnson in his bout with Jeffries would even fetch $800,000. or those worn by John L. Sullivan in his bout with Corbett...though if any gloves were near the $800,000 range then it would likely be the two mentioned above, but not anything by Ali...maybe in 100 years, or so!

As one who has been collecting for forty years -since I was in junior high- I can tell you that the only way those gloves are worth that much is if Ali himself comes attached to those gloves.

I beleive older championship belts are worth the most money.

Damn I just bought a pair of these gloves off of Ebay for £50, you telling me they are fake. I suppose I should have guessed as the seller had five sets for sale :-)

What...you didn't assume that Ali and Liston switched gloves after every round?
