Johanneson & Fehintola make weight!

Carl Johanneson and Femi Fehintola both made weight for tomorrow's British super-featherweight title clash in Barnsley.

The weigh-in and press conference took place earlier this afternoon at Elland road. First up to the scale was Johanneson who weighted in at a comfortable 9 stone 3 and 2 oz, followed by Femi who weighed in bang on the division limit of 9 stone 4.

There was a brief verbal exchange between the fighters that smacked more of each man's individual desire to emerge triumphant rather than any genuine grudge. “I would like to thank Carl for giving me the opportunity to become British champion, this is speed and power versus strength and I am looking forward to winning the British title tomorrow night,” said the challenger, to which Johanneson replied, “Femi, I let my fists do the talking, but you are not going to win that title off me!”

Slightly perplexed, the challenger responded, “That's cool, you bring your best, I will bring my best,” leaving the champion to respond, “That's what its all about.”

Those in attendance included IBF light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods as well as Jason Booth and Brian Magee who both box on the undercard.

Looking forward to tomorrows fight card! Sky Sports from 10pm. I think Carl will have too much power and strength for Femi, although I think Fehintola does a strong chance.

Hope it's a good one, anyway!

Hopefully it's a decent fight, I'm quite looking forward to it. I don't give Femi much of a chance though, I just can't see him keeping Johannson off him for 12 rounds. Femi, skilled as he is, is likely to be let down by his total lack of power.

This will probably be a bit like Burns vs. Arthur, with Femi doing well early on with his speed and accuracy only for Johanneson to walk him down by the later rounds and maybe force the stoppage.

Yes, but I think if Carl wants it to be over before the later rounds, it might be. If Carl tries to box then he might find himself a few rounds down but I can't see anything other than a Johanneson win. Femi had better have a good chin.

I could see Femi getting stopped early if Johanneson catches him, but I don't think it'll be easy. He'll probably expend a lot of energy with quick in-and-out bursts though, which is why I think Johanneson might catch him a little later when he's tiring. Should be a decent scrap though, either way.

Is everyone underestimating Femi maybe? No one is giving him much of a chance at all. He sounds a very confident sort - haven't seen him so don't have much idea what to expect, but if he has a good chin, he might just outbox Johanneson for an unexpected result.

Carl might just run out of ideas if he doesn't get this over with early.

Looking foward to finding out tonight :TU:

For a Femi win it's 6/1 with Ladbrokes.

Anyone think he is worth a bet and could pull off the upset?

I have a gut feeling Femi will pull it off but I wouldnt take that feeling to the bookies if I was you

Nevermind 6/1, they'll give you 12/1 on a Femi points win. Which is the only way he can pull it off, surely?

It could happen, MW, he is certainly a confident sort. But even when he's been compiling his record (of which I've probably seen most) he gets clipped (as is inevitable). Steps up a couple of leagues tonight but, you never know.

It'll be interesting to find out. Are you going to be ringside Ian?

The early rounds are a danger, but if he's really confident, he hopefully wont freeze under the TV lights.
You have to root for someone coming from such a background, though I like the way Carl fights.

Femi got a write up on Maxboxing yesterday.

Yes, I'll be there. Dreading the last mile of the relatively short trip. Barnsley Metrodome is one of those places where if you're a stranger you can see the venue but can't seem to find the road to get to it. If you're me that is.

Seen a lot of Femi - he'll say different but he appears to have little in the way of power. Maybe he'll surprise Carl and come out blazing (Johanneson has been caught cold before - but by a much heavier punching man). Anyway, you lot have started to make me think it'll be much more of a contest so that's good!

Big old bill - 12 fights!

Weird, knocked down by a jab? or atmost a sloppy left hook...

Femi was doing alright too for the first 2 rounds, then Johanesson just seemed to take control..Femi was getting hurt by those body shots. I'll be shocked if Femi wins this, we are in rd5

All over. Nice selection of shots there from Carl to finish up. Strange fight though, Femi has stamina issues or was he just worn down with those body shots or did the big occasion get to this head..anyway solid win for Johanneson.

It was the power of Johanson more than stamina issues that was the problem with Fehintola. Every shot Johanson landed with forced Femi to retreat - not saying every shot hurt him, but forced his respect. Also took his heart away with the fact that Femi was hitting him clean but it wasn't buding the "china chin" Johannson.

As predicted by some it was man against boy, I'm not sure what Glenn was seeing giving the 2nd round to Fehintola - thought Johansson won everything clear.

Some of Johannson's work was wasn't great though - a major over relyance on the left hand...... plus a very poor finisher. I think he could have finished it in the 4th. He seemed to know when Femi was hurt but just wouldn't throw the leather to get him out of there untill the very end.... Also despite being much stronger he allowed Femi to hold on way to easy. He should have been rigging to get out - instead of relying on the break. Also I said to my old man in the 4th and 5th "He (Carl) think every shot that lands will put Femi down".... He would land a clean shot and almost wait to say "Well, go down Femi".

He looked slow and defence was leaky. I'm not saying he treated Femi lightly, but I think he might have been a bit over confident that he would get him and almost treated him with contempt from the off.

Thats my view.

Yeh I agree Carl took his heart away though I thought Femi got his 2nd wind in the fourth when he fought back off the ropes only to be put into place a few seconds later. Definetly gaps in Johanneson's defense and any of the current world champs would expose that, but Carl is still a work in progressor is he just limited...we'll soon see when he steps up to Euro class.

just a post about tonights main event, femi boxed well for the duration of the fight but in reality the fight lasted a couple of rounds longer than i thought. carl boxed predictably and his power was just too much for young fehintola.......

by taking this fight fehintolas managerial team had tried to jump a few divisions at once. the gamble failed unfortunately as their charge was dismantled by the leeds boy.

many thought that this was a perculiar sanction by the BBB of C and im inclined to agree, femi had no experience of boxing off the back foot and this was always going to be what would happen. femi had also no experience of boxing at this level and this intensity.

where does femi go from here..... well, he has a reasonable fan base and therefore a certain amount of marketability, but sad to say that sub british title level is probably his ceiling in this game. mainly because of his lack of punching power i feel. he should focus on the english title i feel, i think billy corcoran is eligible for this, that might be a decent fight.......but unfortunately its only an undercard scrap.

where does carl go from here..... well, im not convinced he has too much more to offer the game than british championship level, perhaps european at most. he has power yes, but fehintola showed enough flaws in johannsens make up to suggest that if goes in with someone who can box and punch and hold a few shots, then it could be interesting.

im glad both boys came through the fight unscathed. im disappointed in fehintolas corner for complaining that the second knockdown was a low blow (especially after whinging about the matthew hatton fight not many weeks ago). it was a great body shot that hit femi on the wasteband of the shorts, which were slightly high. im astute enough to realise that its easy for me to see with the hindsight of a tv recording..in retrospect im sure team femi will realise the quality of the shot that floored their man.

Generally agree with this post. Unless Femi can boil down to feather, which I doubt, I cannot see him winning the British title. Indeed the English title might beyond him depending on the champion. For example, I would favour Billy Corcoran convincingly over Femi.

I also agree that I don't think Johannson will progress much further.. For me, it was the same Johannson that struggled to get past Andrew Ferrans (the first time). I would probably favour Craig Docherty (if he hasn't retired) over him and even (if the rumours are true) the comebacking Michael Gomez would provide a hell of test.... What a fight that would be, and what an atmosphere - with the Man Utd vs Leeds Utd thing going on.

The only thing that made me think that Johannson could progress alot futher is maybe him knowing Femi as he did knew he could beat him in 3rd gear and the defensive weaknesses and finishing issues that I thought he had would not be shown in a fighter he might be more weary of.... Maybe the Corcoran performance over Rutherford frightend him, and thats why he put in such a clinical display. Maybe thats why he beat Ferrans easy in the rematch.

Also agree with your point on the sanctioning, it was a strange one especially in light of the BBBoC refusing to sanction Allan Bosworth in order to save a show. However, Fehintola wasn't a mandatory and I think given the depth in the devision is borderline top 10 - so it was just about plausable.

This one went almost exactly to the script. Johansson is a decent British Champ, and Fehintola was nowhere near that level. If Femi could punch, maybe he could have made it closer. But tonight's result was on the cards from the minute the fight was announced. I hope Femi comes back though.

Props to Carl, but I don't see him as much more than the level he's at now. I'd like to see Johansson versus Mitchell though.....

Yes, I hope that his team keep him busy now. I hope that the outside "distractions" that Adam Smith eludited and that Femi has so admirably fought against do not become tempting now he has lost a feeling down.

His team should keep a close eye on him and try and get him back and winning as soon as possible.

I think Carl would beat Arthur, Gomez and Doherty. None of these guys could take his punch for long. I think if Carl was fighting these guys he would train much harder and be a lot sharper. I feel he has a lot of talent yet to come out. This dude tonight came in confident, undefeated and determined. Not a bad warm up fight.

Kevin Mitchell will NEVER fight Carl Johannsen. Mitchell eats a million right hands a fight. Thats Carls best punch.

Looks like it was that right hook to the body that started it off. The left hook to the head seemed to miss.

I was surprised as the collapse of Femintola. Johanssen didn't really find his rhythm fully, nor did he expect those to be the damaging shots. He must've been surprised at the effect of his shots.

I thought Fehintola's lack of power would be a major problem and so it proved. I would say this would have been a lot tougher fight had Femi been able to punch with more authority, watch again and see how his quick bursts and sharp jab gave Johanneson problems on the outside, surely a harder dig would have meant more problems for Johanneson as Femi would have kept his man at bay for longer. Plus those big rights, at least one or two which landed flush.

Femi got hit hard and didn't know how to cope, once again Johnny Nelson's analysis was spot on. Johanneson comes in in pretty straight lines and his intense body attack and massive strength proved the deciding factor. The point is i really believe Femi boxed ok (i also gave him round 2) and had he been able to dig harder then it would have been a lot more interesting.
