It would make some sense to fight Manfredo in his American debut, perhaps in Madison Sq Garden as they could use the Italian angle to promote/hype it.

I see your point here, wasn't it a 3rd round stoppage and Spina already had a loss on his slate? Anyway this is a pretty poor matchup IMO Manfredo is no great shakes and lives off the back of the contender...correct me if i'm being harsh here.

On a wee side note Manredo's dad sounds like a bit of a prick as well after running across the ring and taunting the stricken Spina after his son had demolished his man.

Calzaghe's career has descended back into a total farce. Why doesn't he just fight Kessler for frig sake.

I don't think the criticism of Manfredo is quite just. He hasn't done anything wrong since the condenter. Shafted vs Mora and decent(ish) wins over Pemberton and Spina. He looked impressive in both.

However, too big a step, way to soon.

Hasn't this been done a million times? Okay, it's a shit fight, but he can't fight Kessler now because Kessler's injured and has to fight Andrade next if he's to keep his belt. Like it or not, the options are super middle are very limited right now, and he's not going to move up to light heavy if there are no big fights for him there either. So in terms of super middleweights who are currently available to fight on that date, there aren't many better than Manfredo. It's embarrassing all round, but what can you do?

Warren should make Kessler immediately a jolly good counter-offer in response to the USD 3.4 million Palle offered Calzaghe last weekend -- or alternatively accept Palle's offer, which would be a career record for JoeC.

Such determined action by Warren would make the Manfredo pick much more accepotable, as it would demonstrate that this is indeed a tune-up to stay busy in preparation of THE big fight.

calzaghe`s career is full of these types of situations, just when a big fight looks on the cards suddenly there`s a load of political manouvering and matchmaking shenanighans throughout the division and then lo and behold he ends up fighting the softer option.
the `big` calzaghe fight is just like that big pot of gold at the end of the rainbow - you`ve heard it being spoken about but you`re not really sure if it exists.

hmmm....not sure if you caught my drift there my old brit hating chum.
what i was trying to say is imo the chances of calzaghe being involved in a big fight are about the same as finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
especially since he`s got all this joe louis title defences in his head.
