i'm assuming it was lacy fight, but have no idea what he got for that or any of his other fights!! if so, what was joe's 2nd biggest payday?

i'm sure this is the best place to ask such a question!!

thanks!! :TU:

His biggest purse was the Veit fight away in Germany I believe. Unless the Lacy fight surpassed that? I heard he got the short end against Lacy in return for home advantage.

Not sure on exact number someone will remember.

veit was the biggest.

1.2m i believe it was.

i remember calzaghe saying that his purse wasn't very big for the lacy fight.

I think they paid Lacy well for his travels, hence the payday wasn't so big for Calzaghe.

Half a million was the number reported at the time. So many things we don't know though: was that net of manager's fees, expenses etc.

I know it sounds a lot, but if you take off 40 per cent for tax, plus Frank's share (if not already deducted), it is peanuts compared to footballers, golfers, tennis player, racing drivers etc.

Apparently Warren doesn't always take his managers fee.

Anyone going to buy the Calzaghe book when it comes out?

Won't be for a while as it seems to be in the planning stages.

I know Frank gets a lot of criticism, but he does pay his fighters well. Other than the Hatton situation, his fighters rarely complain about their purses.

It's the bloody fans that need to complain. Anyone remember the dirge we had to sit though on Sky through 2004? (Sky got noticably better - in domestic & intl coverage, when 'someone' left'...)

Or did you all cancel your subscriptions?

That's very true.

The Warren years on Sky were for the most part absolute garbage.

Footballers play twice a week.Tennis players play in 20+tournaments a year, golfers must play in a similar amount of tournaments and racing drivers(formula 1)have 17 races every year.

Joe has 2 fights maximum a year....and a genuine challenge every 8 years!!!!

That might explain the pay difference!!

True, Calzaghe has been earning decent purses the last 9 years for mostly knockover jobs. He has no room for complaint.

thanks...i'm curious what he will accept to come to usa to fight taylor!!

with $1.2 mill the biggest, i guess $2 million would be realistic to fight jermain over here!! :TU:

I think it was £1.2m (GBP not US Dollars).

£1.2m ~ $2.25m which was for a no risk fight so I would imagine that he'd be looking for more than that

No way did Calzaghe make £1.2m sterling for the Veit fight. The winning purse bid was only $1.75 million.

Don't forget TV rights though, it's quite possible that topped up the announced purses quite heavily.

Not that much surely? Joe would only have got the UK rights I'd have thought. And if memory serves correct the fight was tucked onto the Khan-Kindelan fight as a bit of an afterthought. I doubt ITV paid much for it.

Back when we were dating, Joey used to lug around this huge oversize Prada, filled with the most unbelievable junk ... I remember one time while he was asleep I sneaked it into a closet and quietly emptied it out into one of thos giant plastic lawn & leaf bags ... I swear, he had over 50 kinds of lipstick in there! Apparently as part of his fight contract with Fwank W., Joey insisted on a free subscription to this fancy lipgloss-of-the-month club, and he could never decide what was his favorite color, so he needed the oversized purse. Ah well, we all have our quirks, I guess...

Youre right. I remember at the time the overall winning bid was in excess of 1m euro, which when broken down equated to £750k for Calzaghe.

I think Calzaghe's figure was calculated as being something like 75% of the overall winning bid, as he was champion.

i have a hard time seeing him getting more than $2.5 million from HBO since he has only fought on there once! the lacy win was very impressive but showtime doesnt have near as big an audience as HBO does!! joe's really not well known enuf over here to be on PPV either & i dont expect beating the guy (manfredo) who only finished 2nd on "the contender" will do a whole lot for his resume'...
