100 Hardest Punching Fighters of All-Time

Being that I have never tried to compile any lists over Top 20, or Top 30, I figured that I might as well try to put together a Top 100 list and see how challenging it would be to do so. Well...it's very challenging and though I have 100 listed in order, I still have a bit of re-arranging to do to the lower 50. Right now the 100 fighters that I picked will pretty much remain, though I may add a fighter and drop one a couple of times, but for the most part the 100 listed now are the 100 that I want to keep. Now 1 through 10 is pretty solid and pretty much as I want it and the same can be said for 11 thru 20, but the rest gets a bit tricky! Anyway, below is my list of the “100 Hardest Punching Fighters of All-Time.”

Let the disagreements begin!!!

Not an easy list to compile in a pound per pound sense. Good over all effort. I made some notes next to some fighter’s names if I felt they should be lower or higher.

For modern fighters I do beleive fighters like Liston, Morrison, and the in shape 225 pound Tua belong.

For old timers, Choynski, Cerdan, Young Stribling, and John L. Sullivan.

It is hard for 230+ pound fighter to make this list, but I do beleive modern giants such as Lewis, Bowe, W. Klitschko should make the list.

Strong list Barry.
Would you consider Artie Levine ?
I have never seen any film of him but its said that he was a viscous puncher and almost k.o.d a young Robinson.

Levine was in my list of 800 total hard punchers that I put together and picked from. Levine could very easily be in the top 100 and it wouldn't get any argument from me!

Good list, I can't see Randolph Turpin in there though and think he should be as he had a tremendous punch and shook Robinson up a number of times in their fights... I'd also put Mcavoy higher then Benn... also Bobby Chacon should be in there I think.... :box: :box: :box:

Nice one Barry
38 “Bombardier” Billy Wells
Interesting to see Billy Wells so high, didn't know he was considered to be one of the all time hardest punchers. Always thought he must be an interesting character.

Actually, Wells hurt pretty much everyone that he managed to hit, but whenever an opponent was able to withstand his punch, Wells was then in big trouble as his chin was one of the more fragile heavyweight chins in history.

Nevertheless, Wells was a very exciting fighter with really good skill and a very poor chin. He was one of those types that would either knock you out, or suffer a knockout, which every one of his losses were by the knockout route.

Wells falls into the group of heavy-fisted, light-chinned fighters along with the likes of Peter Maher, who hit just about as hard as any heavyweight in history though his chin seemed to be weaker than Wells', George Chaney, who always got the most praise from writers and fighters of his day for being one of the hardest hitting fighters to ever step foot in the ring, Bob Satterfield, Tommy Morrison, Danny Lopez, though Lopez went down a lot he usually got back up, Ricardo Moreno, Florentino Fernandez, George Kapeen, etc…these guys could knock a guys head off, yet most of them had chins that were vulnerable to even a good shot-gun jab. They all went down hard at times, but it was always an exciting experience and Wells is right there in league with the most exciting fighters of all-time.

He's also the guy who hits the gong at the start of old films.

Barry, do you know anything about his supposed fight with Jack Johnson in 1911 ever took place? It was mentioned briefly in a book I read a little while ago, and CBZ has it down with result unknown.

I promise not to change my screen name to the Bombardier50Project.

Like always great work Barry and did point out my slight disagreements and I think you should consider puting Felix Trinidad in that list. :TU:

None of them was a real puncher. Maybe Ingemar at the margin. Max and Lennox were systematic, intelligent defensive fighters who outthought their opponents.

Good list but no Tito or Lewis is abit shocking. I'd have Moore, Tyson and Foreman higher too.

Did you not consider anyone who is active right now for you list?
Or did you feel that no one today hit hard enough to be considered?

Superb list barry.

You won't get any arguments from me, because I couldn't even begin to compile a top 100 p4p list.

I could come up with a different one every time I thought about it. :TU:

A good set of names. Some more worthy of consideration - Rodrigo Valdez, Lennox Lewis, Andy Ganigan, Maxie Rosenbloom, Ike Williams.
