Fully recovered from the cut thumb that kept him out of his proposed clash with Kell Brook in Manchester, Tony Doherty scraped home against Gary Reid in Newport ? and promptly suffered another injury setback.

A broken hand will once again put on hold a career that has been more stop than start in the last year.

In the second it looked as if Doherty might force a stoppage, with Reid?s legs completely gone.

Saved by the bell, the Mancunian staggered back to his corner, but had shown his heart by landing two punches flush in Doherty?s chin in the midst of his mini-crisis.

And from there, Reid came storming back, forcing Doherty ? hampered by his break - on to the back foot.

The cleaner work was coming from the house fighter, but Reid was putting Doherty under considerable pressure, and in the end lost by only a point, 58-57.

Doherty extended his record to 19-0 (1NC) with the win, and will now be looking for a title fight in 2007.

I was suprised to see it was Gary Reid on Warren's site. As on BBN it has Gary O'Connor. I doubt it was 'The Bodysnatcher' as he wouldnt take a fight against a big welterweight when he wants to compete at lightweight from now on.

I maybe wrong, though.

Emma, you say "what a surprise" but if Doc broke his hand in the second its hardly a stalling tactic. He clearly had some hand damage in the fight, and i doubt it was caused to avoid fighting kell brook in 2 weekstime.

Yes but why was he fighting 3 weeks before he was due to fight kell brook?

yes it was oconnor who fought doherty, and he did not seem to stop throwing any power shots with both hands all through the fight so mmmm... it was a testament to oconnors toughness as he damaged his left hand sparring 2 days before and did not say a word. he was wincing being wrapped up for the fight! he was down to face fewkes but they pulled out last minute again! so off he went to newport and fought the heavier doherty who was 18-0 and a welter while oconnor was 7-0 and a light welter anyone who seen the fight will say a draw was the more correct verdict as oconnor was relentless and didn't take a backward step all night, although tony did show some brilliant ring craft and i am aware that he is a real nice kid out of the ring.
