Abysmal officiating

Why on earth was Hughes stopped after taking one big punch? The previous round the referee let Corcoran get battered all over the ring for most of the round quite happily. Appalling officiating

Poor old Hughes, can't help but feel that was a put up job, the ref only had Hughes only 1 round up going into the last round! Christ, what fight was he watching?

That was the worst stoppage i have EVER seen, Hughes was dishing out 20x that in the previous round.
That's not acceptable, he should be sacked on the spot.

I'm usually on the side of the Ref when it comes to stoppages, better too early rather than to late.

But this time it was very harsh on Hughes, he'd been hurt with a shot, but no more than he had hurt Corcoran in the round before, you'd have to say Corcoran was probably more hurt.

Worse still was the fact he only had Hughes up by a round going into the last.

Sean occassionally post here, so I just got to say that he was shafted.

The fact that the ref only had Sean one point up was as bad as the stoppage itself. Imagine had the ref let it continue and scored it a draw. I'm sure Sean would prefer that, but not by alot. I didn't score, but I think I gave Billy two rounds.

I'm a big fan of Corcoran and I posted of my desire for him to go down in weight following the Johanneson loss..... However, I think Feather is his limit. That was a frightening performance, and I hope he is still being checked over. The guy looked out of it in the interview.

Hard luck Sean, Chin up.

What was Corcoran doing fighting almost half a stone lighter than he's ever made before. It looks to me like they were tying to sell him as a potential opponent for Bernard Dunne for the European title with his Irish background.

He looked emaciated and was far too weak at the weight. He needs to get back up to 126 at the very least if not 130 again. I dread to think what could have happened Corcoran had that been a 12 rounder for a title becuase he would have had too much heart to quit.

As for the stoppage what a complete and utter joke. That referee should be suspended on the spot escpecially considering his scorecard as well. The BBB of C need to take action in cases like this.

Agree with all of that, I didn't know he was moving down untill now - but the minute I head I thought "he's after Bernard Dunne".

I would like to see him at 126.... I think he can make it fairly comfortably, not strong enough at Super Feather.

Cocoran's skill is terrible, he just gets into a war and has the conditioning to last well enough.

Hughes was shafted I agree, after the 4th Hughes was the better man.

That was shocking. Hughes was well and truly shafted tonight, I couldn't believe it when I saw Lee Cook jump in to stop it. Sure, Corcoran caught him with a decent shot, but Hughes had been bouncing shots off Corcoran's head all night. Disgraceful stoppage. And how the hell Cook had Hughes up by just one point is beyond me. He was out of sight on my card.

I don't know if a move to featherweight will improve Corcoran chances if he fights another southpaw, he was very square on and lack of head movement was a worry.

i was ringside and heard that the ref stopped the bout because hughes eyes had 'gone' just after a punch landed. i thought the stoppage was premature...

That just doesn't stack up, he took once big shot, and then blocked the vast majority of the follow up, how could he have done that if he was 'gone.' Had he jumped in as soon as the shot landed, then perhaps that would have made sense, but it was about 10 seconds afterwards that he suddenly decided that a fighter who was capable of defending himself was gone and needed to be saved from himself.

It's hard not to draw some ugly conclusions from that stoppage, something stank.

Excellent fight, unbeleivable finish. that should never have been stopped considering what had gone before. Piss poor reffing, Simon Block should be dancing on his knackers

He took a massive right hand and threw nothing back and he was exhausted

The fight was a bit spoilt by the pre fight comments of the SKY presenter, he said the fights got it all , excitment, knockdowns and contreversy. Then before the break SKY showed a couple of clips , including the Knockdown of Hughes.

So when the fight went into the last round , and Hughes was ahead ,you kind of knew Corcoran was going to win, because there had been no contraversy before that.

Johnny Nelson pointed out that Corcoran had taken 36 unanswered punches in the previous round but this was some how deemed ok by the ref.

Hughes takes a decent shot, and gets clipped by some follow up punches, and the ref jumps in - Looked like a bad decision to me.

I don't like to criticise the refs too much, but this looked like your typical house referee decision.

But so was Corcoran the round before. If anything he was in worse shape than Hughes was. If the ref thought that Hughes couldn't go on, that's fair enough, it's his call. I just find it shocking that Corcoran was out on his feet for almost two rounds before the stoppage, but the ref let him continue.

As for the 'eyes have gone' excuse, you could see from the close-up footage that Hughes was still alright. His eyes were fine, he had his hands up, and he was still moving his head and upper body. It was a rocky moment for Hughes and nothing more.

Corcoran was a very, very lucky boy last night.

Corcoran should've been stopped in the 7th round without a doung.

However, when Hughes was stopped he didn't react instantly and get angry.

TV interview was weird after. Marsden didn't seem too bothered.

Scariest thing was Billy's speech.

Yeah it was a disgraceful display of referee'ing. He has to be made to explain himself and then be sacked.
Its not good enough and at best its awful, inconsistent officiating cos he let Corcoran take 10 times worse punishment in the previous round, and at worst its corrupt cos it certainly looked like the ref was trying to help out Corcoran.

Regarding Corcoran, he is shit and should retire now. It was shocking to see him getting battered all over the ring bu a guy with 1 stoppage win. Everytime Hughes hit him, Corcoran was all over the place. He looked like Colin Dunne looked when Dunne was at the very end of his career and any punch seemed to have him on rubber legs.

Shocking stoppage and the fact that the ref only had Hughes one round up was even more questionable!... Billy should have been stopped or pulled out in the 7th and being allowed to take that baeting will not have done him any favours at all... his post fight interview was very worrying... you have to wonder about the wisdom behind allowing Billy to go down two weights and also what they have been teaching him in the gym as he doesnt seem to have a clue how to defend himself... huge heart but noones taught him how to box and its probably too late now...

Maybe if Corcoran has time to do the weight he will be better as a Super Bantam. Only a few months ago he was a Super Feather - so perhaps he needs to do it more gradually.

No, theres no way he should be at super-bantam... he was emaciated and had no punch resistance... he should be at 126 at least... it was just madness allowing him to go down so far...

I do think you are probably right.... but it would depend on how and when Corcoran decided to go down in weight. Wasn't his first fight post Johannesson at Super Feather?

Perhaps he decided say 3 weeks ago and the only way he could do it was via extreme diets.

Without knowing the full facts its hard to judge, if Corcoran can physically make the weight doing it wrong.... then he could make the weight more comfortably doing it right.

However, if he did the weight correctly now.... then he is no Super Bantam.

Well looking at his performance there certainly seemed to be something 'wrong' with Billy.... you'd have to say that he was either dead at the weight or that he's just basically 'shot' ...I've seen him in quite a few fights and he's very good to watch and has a great heart but no defence, why hasnt he been tought to block punches, bob and weave etc... he took quite a hammering from Johansson and fighters with his style never last long.... if he cant improve on his defence I think he should hang them up now as he's liable to get hurt....

I would think (hope as a fan of Corcoran) that it is the weight. He looked very good in his first fight post Johanneson.

Question is, whether he can do the weight better next time or is he no Super Bantam. I suspect the latter too, but it could have been a "rushed" job just for this TV date.

I think he should come back at 126... his people were probably trying for 122 as the division seems wide open now domestically... but he looked all skin and bone... just hope this fight hasnt taken too much out of him, he looked very shaky in the post fight interview while Hugues was as right as rain...
