Dale Robinson vs Chris Edwards

Bit of a major upset on a Non TV card last night (Imapct Boxing). Journeyman Chris Edwards stopped former Commonwealth champion, Dale Robisnon in 8 rounds for the English Flyweight title (schedule 10 rounds).
Bad defeat for "Richter Scale".... One that is hard to comeback from. Like Billy Corcoran, it seems that Dale's ideal weight is something that it is not applyable..... If there was a Super Flyweight limit in the UK, I'm sure Dale would be there.
Well done to Edwards, I would have liked to have seen this fight. Very shocking result.

I agree with the super flyweight division having a Lonsdale
belt and it would be nice for the light flyweight division to be
introduced. People might say that we don't have enough boxers
at flyweight as it is but I think it would encourage more lighter
weight fighters to change over from the amateurs.
It has been 3 years since Dale made flyweight. Once you compete
for title honours at a higher weight division, how hard it must be to
go down a weight. Especially for the lighter men, 6 pounds is a lot.
If we have an English title, do you think the Central Area title
has any significance?

Mmmm.... Its a tough call, yes I would like to see fighters fight for domestic, european and world honours at their own weight. However, I'm not sure if we do have the number of fighters. I would really like to include 10 British title eligable Flyweights for the rankings that I do.... but I cannot get beyond 8 (and most of them regularly compete at Bantam). I wouldn't like to see a situation where at British belt cannot be continued regularly.
I would imagine it is very hard for Dale to make Flyweight... especially as he seems to be a fighter who walks around at higher than Bantam (at least). Dale certainly hasn't been the same fighter since the Power fight.... his fights since then have been at Catchweight, with Dale being around the Super Flyweight mark.
However, for some fighters its a case of taking the opportunities cause it might not come elsewhere. Damean Kelly for instance has always said he can make Super Flyweight easy at least.... despite campaigning as a Bantam of late.
With regard to the Central Area (etc) belts and the English belts..... For most weight classes I would say there is room for Regional, National (English/Celtic) and British belts. However, not for Flyweight and probably not Bantamweight. I would stick with the English belt there. More prestigious if less of a history.

Report up at

Indeed, surprising result though Dale has been on the slide a little of late.

Has he been on the slide? If so, how badly?
Serious questions, as I have been out in the wilderness for a while. I caught the Power fight, and I didn't think that he was absolutely battered in that one, in fact I thought he did himself proud, and I don't remember him having a huge number of ageing fights before that. He's still a relatively young man, so is it just the weight issue?

im very very shocked, and equally sad for chris aston who is a decent gritty guy. but im sure chris will bounce back with some decent fighters, unfortunately he has seen hobson beaten soundly by macca, the demise of james hare, and now the 'richter scale' debacle...
chin up chris, and bounce back soon mate !!

Actually, looking at his record maybe I'm being a bit harsh on him. It's just I remember being ringside at Hartlepool when he drew with Moses Kinyua. Spoke to Dale afterwards who was astonished with the draw and had to admit I'd given it to Kinyua by a point.
Don't think he's been the same since his epic with Booth. Perhaps he can come again though - why not?

Cheers. I don't know if you are being harsh on him or not though. Three defeats and a draw in the last eight isn't good form, especially when he'd showed that he wasn't far away from Booth. Maybe that fight has taken something out of him.

I mentioned in another post about the Superfly title, and how we have 3 or 4 good boxers that could make that limit, Haskins, Kelly, Robinson and Napa.
All are a bit outweighed in the Bantam class division, but to big to make fly.

Fantastic result for Chris Edwards after years of plugging away at the pro game.
I honestly thought Edwards had bitten off more than he could chew against Robinson and expected Dale to stop him fairly quickly, but having spoken to a member of the Impact team they were under no illusions that Robinson was a very tough opponent BUT were confident of an upset because of the supreme shape and fitness that Edwards had drilled himself into.
I saw Edwards last fight and it was a cracker but also against a debutent over 6x2's and I was struggling to see how he was going to transfer that to 10x3's title fight against a quality operater in Robinson. Well Chris did, so hats off to him.
He fully deserves a crack at the British title now.

true but against who? its been 6 years since the last fight for the British Flyweight title, sad but true.

Who indeed.
Lee Haskins may say otherwise but I still reckon he can make 8st.
Hopefully Don Broadhurt can get a move on (Charlie Magri got a shot after something like 5 fights).

Broadhurst might be a choice, but not for anther year, I'd like Dan to have at least 7-8 fights before thinking of taking on someone like Edwards.

Yeah, have to agree. Maybe they can pack that many fights in quickly, but a year at the least is probably what we're looking at. Grabbing at straws with Broadhurst I suppose.
A long shot and no doubt the board would block it, but Delroy Spencer holds a win, draw and a loss with Edwards....would this be pushing it?

I was at that event too, Edwards was rocked a couple of times by the asian lad, who'd been thrown right in at the deep end for his debut! Never looked like loosing the fight, but, didnt look like he would be good enough to beat Robinson either. Has Dale slipped that much, or was Edwards that good on the night?

Ahmed put in a hell of a performance against Edwards. Seemed to go from a boy to a man during the fight. I was genuinely concerned for him before hand, but had to applaud him at the end.
I like to think Edwards put on a career best showing and rose to the occasion. Wish I could have gone.

Just occured to me, with the lack if British title class flyweights in Britain, Edwards may want to look at a Commonwealth crack.
Presume Haskins has vacated and there are plenty of Flyweights in the Commonwealth to choose from.

That is odd, I have been following boxing for year without "noticing" there hasn't been a British champion for six years.
It does beg the question? Why English title and not British?
Surely if there is more than 4 active fighters at fly there should be a British champion, even if he isn't the greatest.

Presumably because the Board deemed Edwards not good enough. Edwards has more than proved his worth with this win though.

Yes he has, but unfortunatly the only boxer he could fight is Robinson!! bit of a catch 22 situation for Edwards, through no fault of his own.
The board are not likely to sanction Robinson to fight for the British title after he has just been stopped for the lesser English title.
Where's all the Flyweights gone??

Why was this for the English Title, why wasn't the vacant British title. Seems very odd.
There isn't many Flyweights around, but surely enough to keep the British title alive. I'm sure if a British title was around then some of the smaller Bantams would be more inclined to fight there.... Likes of Colin Moffet etc.
Cannot understand why a minor title is being kept alive and not the major one. If there is only one fighter eligable then surely he should be the champ? He won't get to keep the lonsdale but surely he should be classed as the champion. Bit rediculous really.

Perhaps the BBBofC don't won't to get themselves in a another position where they a have a champion at the weight with no one deemed worthy to defend it against.
The Londsdale belt costs a fair bit and I suppose the Board don't want to be dishing them out willy-nilly.
When you think what some boxers have gone through to get one for keeps.....
Back to Edwards and I think his most plausible route would either be an English title defence or maybe try for the Commonwealth title, or if Haskins can make flyweight a rematch with the British title on the line.

Edwards has obviously proved himself worthy to the BBBofC, they approved Edwards v Robinson in a rematch but with the British title on the line.

Question is why is Robinson still considered worthy? Not meaning to sound cruel - but if they didn't deem Edwards worthy enough before, why Robinson after we got beaten.
From what I have read, we are not talking about a fluky win.
