Rachid Drilzane for Khan
Posted: 29 Nov 2006, 06:44
by Old bones Ian
Amir Khan will face Rachid Drilzane in his next fight on Dec 9th.
He's a non-puncher, but will at least be a boxer that has spent most of his career at Light Welter. So he may be stronger than some of Khan's recent opponents.

I really think that Craig Watson knock down is etched in Frank's memory - he seems terrified of Khan copping one on the chin.
I know he is the golden goose but he is going to have to feel the weight of a 10st fighter's dig one day..

How does Warren keep getting away with this 0 KOs

It begs the question has Amir's chin been exposed in the gym at some point as being less then stellar??

One thing I have noticed is the Reebok gloves they use for Khan's bouts look pretty big. Obviously they'll be the standard 10oz but as we all know different brands of glove vary i.e. Reyes better for punchers than Everlast. Probably nothing, just something I'd noticed.
Warren's choice of opponents does make you wonder, even if you're trying to protect your fighter surely it can help to keep feeding him fighters with no punch.

Hard to see a great deal of merit in this fight must be said, maybe they want to see how he copes with a bigger opponent who fights at light welter?

Come on, the Amir road show is getting pretty pathetic, typical Warren, puts him in with guys who dont have any kind of punch, the kids losing credibility by the day, pity he doesn't realise it. The only way that shite would stop is if people show their disgust by not paying good money to see Khan fighting total no hopers. Why would Warren risk him when the money is rolling in, the folk who go and see him are mugs, sorry guys. I wouldn't go and see him fighting this calibre of opponent if I got in for nowt.

As an Olympic Silver medalist at Lightweight I dont think the jump of 5lbs is sufficient an excuse for this very cautious match making.
Admittedly he is very young, but so were the likes of Pernell Whitaker and Meldrick Taylor when they turned pro.
I dunno, something seems amiss to me.

Maybe this guy doesn't have any arms and relies on the Bernard Hopkins shoulder shrug for defence before counter punching with his stumps.

Although the fact that Khan is being matched with non-punchers is a little worrying, the overall quality of his opposition is still of a decent level. Much, much better than the type of fighters Hatton, Calzaghe, Mitchell, and even Hamed were fed at this stage of their careers.
It's interesting to see that Drilzane has even weighed in several times above 140. I sure that they want to just test Khan against a fighter who should be big enough to rough him up a little.
In my opinion it's still a little early to be heavily criticising someone who, for all his talents, is still a very young, novice pro.

I've said for a long time that I didn't think Khan was the real deal, only time will tell, but at this rate were going to have to wait till he's about 26 before he gets someone with a pulse. Wish folk would vote with their feet, stay away from this shite. Any young fighter has to be "broken in" so to speak, but then you hear Khan spouting off about winning titles, it's almost laughable. Reminds me of that clip in the Rocky movie when he says to his trainer "how do you mean they've all been handpicked" Wake up and smell the coffee, folks. Khan is a cash camel, nothing more.

but Glittermonkey people are worried about his defence and fighting guys who can't punch isn't going to improve this, surely better take a few hard punches now and not wait til he fights someone who can really follow it up...unless his chin is non exsistant of course

Oh I totally agree, I've nothing against Kahn and wish him all the success in the future I just find Warren's match making amusing.

This is only his tenth fight though. I agree wholeheartedly that he needs to be tested against fighters with respectable digs, and it is better to find out sooner rather than later (unless his team know something that we don't). However I don't believe that there is any real rush, Khan is still a kid after all. And it's not as if Warren's been duping the fans by having him topping cards. If he's still up against feather-fisted journeymen in five fights time, then I'll jump on the band wagon. Until then I'm prepared to cut the kid some slack.

i ain't too bothered by his progress at the moment.
first 10 fights or so are always crap.
let's hope sometime next year he is mixed into domestic level and let off the leash a bit more.

Yeah, I'm sure it will be a good test

fighting a guy whos actually nearly the same weight as Khan, for once. Come on we all know that's how you build your fighter up, start a couple of weight divisions down and then gradually getting the opponent a bit bigger after 9 or 10 fights you get him in with someone nearer his weight, and then of course just increasing the power a tiny bit, just incase he can't hold a shot.
My god, Warren is taking a big risk here, maybe he should reconsider, there are plenty of featherweights out there who Khan hasn't beaten yet. Get a grip guys, you'se are all getting taken for a ride, just make sure you dont end up with your kegs at our ankles in a dark alley

Khan has supposed to be improving at a very very fast pace
too fast for the pad man, and looking awesome in the gym
i believe he is ready to be stepped up
but, if you compare his level of oppenant to other novice pro & even pros in general, he is still fighting some good lads
althou the lack of KO's is a bit soft, but why risk putting him in with a puncher in a non title 'friendly'

As Mr Miyagi might have said...
"Pad's a don't hit a back."

Aye, he's got awesome power, NOT. It's about time someone told him to sit down a bit on his punches instaed of jumping about like a kangaroo. I think he's in and out so fast cause he doesn't want to get tagged cause he knows he'll be on his tail. Not convinced about Khan, and matching him up with these type of guys doesn't do anything to convince me he's getting better.
Dont see how his opponents are better than the usual run of the mill guys??? You've got to remember, just about all of his guys have been a lot smaller than him!!!!!

..but whos experience was vast. If Khan is competing for the European crown inside 20 fights I would be very surprised, never mind 11!

bit of a joke really the thing is I can understand him being put in with people with shit records if they but only really the wyley old pro type shit record not someone who has only had 13 fights. Whats Kahn learning?? As mentioned early he still forgets to put his hands on his face when throughing the big haymakers.

Love it, finally they ditch the featherweight journeymen but retain the 'opponent with 0 KO's' requirement. Obviously these guys are seeing things in the gym that are making them steer him ultra-cautiously. How does allegedly keep finding these obscure opponents to import?
Cant wait to hear Barry McGuigan telling millions of people "this French kid is dangerous and hungry! He's a very good opponent!!"
Khan really needs to stop talking about becoming a world champion in a year. Joel Casamayor isn't going to succomb to Khans chin up amateur style. Who bets Warren steers him clear of the British and Euro titles, straight to a WBU fight with a dead body?

We all know the Boxers he should not be fighting.
Can we come up with a list of the next 5 boxers Khan should face in order & assuming he beats each of them.
What would be your choice as his manager?
Colin Lynes
Barry Morrison
John Fewkes
Jonathan Thaxton
Lenny Daws
Some time later Junior Witter?
