Boxing Back in Sweden.... of sorts, but its a start.

I never thought I would see the day in my lifetime but.
Pro boxing will return to Sweden on January 27th for the first time since 1969 (when it was outlawed). This was decided today by the authorities handling the new martial arts law in Sweden, that goes in effect January 1, 2007. Although pro boxing now is back, it isn't without restrictions. Ten-ounce gloves must be used and the rounds will be maximized to six (on this occasion at least) with 2 minutes duration each, as this is considered safe enough to be allowed.
However, the same authorities turned down German promoter Wilfried Sauerland's request to stage a show at the Globe Arena in Stockholm with Nikolai Valuev in the main event the very same month, as they felt the WBA rules were not quite safe enough.
Apparently the Swedes must accept a gentler, softer perhaps, version of pro boxing, with lesser rounds and thicker gloves. Quite similar to amateur boxing, in fact, although no headgears will be necessary.
The Swedish promoters who will be having a go, first time around are "New Sweden Boxing Promotion" with ex-boxers and enthusiasts Robert Nordman (a former pro boxer himself) and Wally Munteanu (an ex amateur fighter of Romanian descent). Neither of the two have had any experience staging pro boxing previously. Gothenburg's Lisebergshall is expected to harbour this event.
Female middleweight Åsa Sandell and ex-WBO champion Armand Krajnc, among others, could be fighting on the card, but nothing is for certain yet. "New Sweden Boxing Promotions" have applied for twelve professional bouts to go ahead.
