WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe says he plans to surpass former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins' record of twenty successful title defenses. Calzaghe will equal 'The Executioner's' mark if he defeats Peter Manfredo on March 3, a feat Hopkins has indicated an interest in trying to prevent. "If Bernard Hopkins doesn't want me to break his title defense record, then he should have fought me when he had the chance years ago. Breaking his record? When it comes to fighting me, Bernard Hopkins, like Roy Jones, is a BROKEN record. Just talk, talk, talk. There are a lot of great and exciting fights out there for me, but the only one that means anything to me right now is Peter Manfredo, Jr., because there are no other fights without beating him. It's funny to see Joe sit there and complain of those two talking big...isn't Joe the same guy who promised a megafight in November, claimed he wouldn't be ready, ended up taking another tuneup in October, claimed Megafight in February, and now we get Manfredo...captain bait and switch over there should be quiet.

Yes, it's easy to assemble a record number of "defenses" if your manager selects all your opponents....

Calzaghe's defenses obvioulsy don't have the same weight as Hopkins'. They don't have the same weight as Ottke's, as a matter of fact.

Fact is MW, Hopkins cleaned out his decision, there was simply nobody left around with any credentials at MW when Hopkins had finished. Ignore the belts for a moment, and consider he took on the guy most reckoned was the unstoppable force in Tito, and bitch slapped him. He also took on all his other leading contenders over a very long period of time.

Calzaghe, sadly, has never done that. There's so many fighters he never faced, or faced near the ends of their careers. Larsen, Markussen, Green, Mundine, Ottke, the list goes on and on.

Joe is in no position to criticise Hopkins, Bernard is a sure fire all time great, Calzaghe will probably get in there too under todays criteria, but there's no comparing the two men's resumes in my book. Post Trinidad, his record's patchy, but prior to that, he beat down everyone in the division who mattered, and took on Taylor, a young, unbeaten and hungry fighter looking to off him, and that at an age when most fighters are long retired.

When Joe is 41, let's have him fight Lucian Bute and see how that works out. Bute will be right in the prime, and Joe would be Hopkins age when he took on Taylor.

All of Hopkins were real world title fights, and before he won it he fought Roy Jones.

B-Hop has 7 defences of the undisputed title, 7 more than Calzaghe.

B-Hop also made 13 defences of his own world title, doing a good job clearing out the division and collecting some very nice scalps like Keith Holmes, Felix Trinidad, and Glencoffee Johnson.

And then there's Joe Calzaghe with his, erm, Chris Eubank win, and then his defences against, erm....

Nah I thought it was a fine match-up, Bika put up a decent challange.

As for manfredo, not many others to fight at the moment, and I think its a fantastic move in terms of publicity.

Atleast Calzaghe only took Bika after his draw against Beyer for the WBC title. Before that Bika wasn't even on the radar, and he got the better of Beyer too.

Calzaghe should change his name to James Toney.

I can't really put too much weight into a draw with a notoriously slow starter after 4 rounds.

Well every last one of Hopkins' defences however bad you think they are would be several notches above Pudwill, McIntyre, Jimenez they are absolute garbage.

Winky had his chance to fight a rematch already.

And Winky v Taylor happening would suit Calzaghe and Warren down to the ground. They can then take another tuneup after Manfredo while they wait for Taylor.

Not sure about this. First part is dead on, but Hopkins has earnt the right to compare his record with those greats. Over the course of his reign he fought the best opposition possible. This may not be the best middle weight era, but Hopkins' record is legit. At least in my eyes.
