What is with all the bad cuts this weekend!

Thaxton last night, right on the eyelid - probably one of the most troublesome cut injuries. I could barely look at him in the post fight interview the way it just hung down like that. Then Morris this evening, followed by Williams.
How long does it take for these cuts to heal to the point where they won't open again easily from a punch? Particularly those on the eyelids, and can they sometimes end a career prematurely?
