I always had this on my mind. What if the great Carlos Monzon would have jumped form middleweight to lightheavyweight to fight the great Bob Foster?

This could have been a great war of the 70s decade. Does Monzon had a chancel, or Foster's power would have been too much for him?

Monzon would likely to have lasted longer than Foster did against Frazier due to his granite chin. Still got to have Bob Foster as a rock solid favourite

Foster wins a lopsided decision. In this matchup, size does matter.

Yeah I'm a big Monzon fan but I can't imagine that working out for him. But as big a puncher as Foster was I don't see a KO...Monzon would engineer a way to hang for 15 rounds and probably not look all that bad along the way. But at the end I don't see his hand raised. Foster was such a good LHW that he could hang with the heavies of that era in a respectable fashion.

Which should once again speak to just how bad the HW scene is today...MW's like Roy, James and maybe Bernard all want to chance it...and they have a chance. Strange days.

All time I'd rate Monzon higher, but at LHW, Foster just has too much power. I can't see Monzon avoiding Foster's powershots for very long, and I think this would be over in about 4 after maybe 3 knockdowns.

Alright, Foster is bigger (and my #1 hitter of all time), but it's only fifteen pounds. Makes a difference, but it doesn't mean Monzon suddenly becomes weak and static. He was a big middleweight anyway, and while Foster most likely did hit harder than Rodrigo Valdez or Bennie Briscoe, it wouldn't be by some phenomenal amount. Monzon never came close to being stopped against either of them; infact, he was only knocked down for half a second in his last thirteen years as a professional. I would pick Foster to win a decision, but I wouldn't expect him to massacre Monzon at all, who had all the experience and ringcraft in the world to match his jaw of stone.

monzon was dropped 3 times in one fight losing on points earlier on.even though he was extremely durable i think foster will stop him.dick tiger was as tough as they come and he found the size and power overwhelming.

That's why I said 'in the last thirteen years of his career'. I think we can agree that Monzon improved drastically between that loss and his title reign, however.

Dick Tiger was five inches shorter than Monzon, let alone Foster, who made him look like a dwarf. He was an easier target than Monzon. Also, their styles were totally different; while Monzon would take a more cautious and methodical approach, Tiger was comparitively a suicide bomber and quite open to those hooks.

I believe Monzon was also knocked down by Jean Claude Bouttier in there first bout in 1972.

Are you sure? I have that fight and don't remember such a knockdown. Was it also you who claimed Denny Moyer knocked Monzon down, when he didn't?

Bouttier didn't knock Monzon down.

I was told by an editor here at BoxRec that Bouttier knocked Monzon down, hopefully he'll comment. I was told by someone else that Moyer dropped Monzon, but did not consider the source to be necessarily reliable. I believe Mike Casey's article about Monzon refers to knockdowns without going into detail.
