Harrison eyes Gammer Wembley bout

Audley Harrison hopes to challenge British heavyweight champion Scott Gammer at Wembley Arena on 17 February.
The Olympic gold medallist wants the bout to be the first of three on his way to a world title fight.

After his three-round destruction of Danny Williams last Saturday, Harrison has joined with promoter allegedly.

But Gammer's manager, Paul Boyce, says the Welshman may still look elsewhere for his next opponent, with Williams or Michael Sprott possibilities.

There is still a contract in place for Gammer to fight Williams at the Afan Lido on 16 February, although the Brixton Bomber is taking stock of his career following his defeat and needs to recover from his injuries.

Boyce confirmed he has entered talks with European champion Sprott this week, as well as being sounded out about a possible Harrison match-up.

"The only thing we have had is a call asking if we'd consider boxing Audley on that date (17 February)," Boyce said.

"But there's no substance in the Audley Harrison fight at the moment.

"Audley has turned down the chance to fight Scott twice, I've offered him that fight and he's turned it down.

"The contract with Danny Williams is still in place and the British Boxing Board of Control has given Danny some extra time to recover from his injuries.

"But Michael Sprott is a strong possibility as an alternative and we're still negotiating on that."

But Warren revealed he had been approached by the BBBC's general secretary, Simon Block, to see if Harrison would be available to challenge Gammer on 17 February.

"I'm hoping we can make that fight - but if not we will look at other opponents," Warren said.

"If Audley keeps winning, he will fight for the world title in this country, just like Frank Bruno."

If Harrison fights and beats Gammer, Warren hopes to negotiate a subsequent showdown with Matt Skelton, which would double as a world-title eliminator, with the winner facing IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Harrison, who won Olympic heavyweight gold in 2000, said: "I'd prefer the best one - which is Wladimir - because of the pull of him also being an Olympic gold medallist.

"A gold medallist against gold medallist is a huge fight.

"I think (Nikolay) Valuev presents the greatest problems because he's so big, but he has defensive weaknesses and I could expose those."

Harrison, who has steadfastly maintained his independence under his "A-Force" promotional banner, insisted he has no regrets about finally signing up with former rival Warren.

"Obviously I had my own ambitions and goals but I think the time is right to join forces - it's all about trying to get the world title in 2007.

"I've no regrets about the pathway I chose. My intentions were noble and I'm here today with my dreams still intact but it makes sense now."

Not terrably impressed if he really wants to fight Gammer Skelton then thinks he will get Klitschko he has another thing comming because Wlad will just say Audley who isn't he the one who lost to guinn, I think he should go skelton then peter or Brok (US contender type) I don't think Gammer adds anything. On the pluse however it is in two months time impressivly active for him so maybe he can get 4 fights in the year.

A Gammer fight is not totally useless. Gammer is afterall unbeaten, holds the British title, and is probably around 20th in the world rankings (although WBC are the only ones to Publish that far down.)

Not a bad rout, I know he is nigerian but Id put Sam Peter in with the american list. Guinn II aint really got a market he needs something to give him respectibility in the US as a contender thus someone who's name is respected that ain't guinn... Who is European champion at the moment.

Someone explain to me how on earth a Harrison v Skelton fight is an eliminator to fight Wladimir Klitchsko. Neither man is even in the top 15 of the IBF rankings, so how on earth could the fight be justified. I mean, I know that this is boxing, and rankings can get changed pretty rapidly, but is there that much call for either man, they they are going to get a voluntary shot? I just cannot see it. If Audley dismantles Skelton in quick fashion, and was then to take on a fringe contender, which in fairness I don't see Skelton as, then just maybe......

Wlad Klitschko would demolish Harrison easily. Can't believe they're talking like this after beating up the shell of Danny Williams on a weeks notice. I don't think he'll beat Skelton.

Surely Skelton and Harrison's best shot at a title is Valuev. For a start he fights regularly, which means a possible shot in under a year even if Valuev fights his mandatory. Plus Valuev's management seem to like putting him in with no-hopers, which must be how Skelton (and probably to a greater degree) Harrison are seen. I just don't see Wlad fighting either any time soon unless they are his mandatory (highly unlikely).

Audley would be wise to go after the domestic guys first. Repair his image bit by bit, with (hopefully) emphatic performances.

Skelton vs Harrison won't happen now. Warren has his man now. Warren wanted him beaten before he signed him, now he has signed him its all about the dough.

Skelton is now too big a risk for little reward for his new cash cow.

I don't see that. Warren needs big fights if he wants to keep ITV sweet. He's lost Scott Harrison (and his WBO title)! Amir Khan, despite being popular, is a long way from a 'big fight' and Calzaghe is maybe a year off a marquee fight with whatever 'big name' Warren can secure. Harrison/Skelton is the biggest fight that Warren can make this side of June 2007... I think it will still happen.

Fair play to Audley for wanting the BIG fights, although its definately too early to be talking about them, but the division is wide open with 4 different champions and 2 or 3 good wins puts anybody in the reckoning for a voluntary defence. I'm not saying Audley definately beats Wlad and co, but these are the type of fights I want to see him in

Personally I'd like to see the Skelton fight next followed by a decent name, such as Brewster, Brock, Rahman, Peter.... maybe with another fight in there somewhere as well and hopefully if he comes through these he gets a title shot.

The future is looking alot more promising tan it did 2 weeks ago for Audley and his fans, but there is still a very long way to go

Absolutely, its total madness talking about Harrisons route to a world title - He wont get past domestic level, Skelton and Gammer will see to that - The A Farce will come unstuck very soon and Harrison will be back to the same status he had before beating Williams.
