Wondering if anyone has any info or memories of Dayton heavyweight Tom Fischer. He was a pretty big draw locally in the late 70's and fought Michael Dokes on the Holmes-Ali undercard, I believe.

There's nothing on the net about him. Not even a mention outside of fight listings. It's always surprising to me how some of these guys fall completely off the radar. Thanks in advance, guys.

Being from Ohio I have seen or heard alot of fighters from around the state, old and new alike, everything from amateur bouts to 'toughman' to legit boxing bouts. Ohio is home to many great boxers:

-James J. Jeffries
-Mike Dokes
-Tony Tubbs
-Ezzard Charles
-James Buster Douglas

And that's just a few of the best from my state. Not to mention other legends like Luther McCarty and perennial contenders like Meyers 'KO' Christner.

Tom Fischer 34-11-0 (19) was one of those guys who was pretty entertaining to watch. He fought from 78' to 87'. He was what you would class as being a grade C fighter, a second to the second best contenders. A journeyman who had some minute potential to go farther than he did.

He fought most of his fights in the Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois areas. Mostly local guys. He was a 'fall guy' in my opinion, a set up, for bigger guys so that they could have another 'win' no matter how minute on their resume. He lost decisions to Jimmy Young, James Tillis, Leon Spinks and lost by KO to guys like Mike Dokes, George Chaplin, Bennie Knoetze, and in his last fight, to Marvis Frazier.

He was a decent fighter. But certainly nothing great, but I think with his toughness, had he made better choices in opposition, he could have built himself up better.

..i saw roughhouse fight a few times....got to know him slightly....did some pr work on a card he was on.

in one cincinnati fight he set a new record for quick kayo at cincinnati gardens. don't recall the time, but i think it was 43 seconds in the first round. i might have had the figure..can't find it now if i did...but maybe i entered it on the quick knockout thread some time back.

i saw him when he outpointed ron stander. good fight for roughouse, as he was usually just a tough brawling kind of guy, but against stander he actually moved, jabbed and boxed..and won all the way. when i complimented him on his change of style he said, "hey, i aint nuts....this guy just comes right at you....hell...he went right at joe frazier!"

the assessment on the prior post describes him well.
