Can Toney Do It?

He's fighting Peter again this Saturday. Keep hearing that he's been whipped into good shape by Billy Blanks. But you never know with Toney - before the Rahman fight his team were saying what good shape he was in.
I believe the loss (controversial) to Peter has put more urgency into Toney. I think it was his 1st loss in 13 or 14 years.
When I see his fight with Holyfield, I marvel at him when he has fitness to match his skills.
I had him edging Peter last time, but he needs to make it pretty clear on Saturday.
Would love to see him get a fight with Maskaev for the WBC.

I watched the first fight the following morning without knowing the result and I'm still gobsmacked how the judges could give it to Peter, it was ridiculous scoring.
Toney outpoints him this time

Intruguing fight with which to start the New Year.
I'll plump for Toney this time, he must fancy the job to go for it again so quickly?

I agree with Terence.

toney has got to do it in 2007 or not at all, he will have to comprehensively outbox peter this time to get the nod, he must box and not trade.

one thing I liked about the 1st fight was the fact that Toney used his jab. A weapon he has neglected for the better part of ten years. It definitely kept Peter off balance.
A lot of lazy heavyweights end up losing weight and weakening themselves, after being whippe into shape. i.e. Bowe-Golota II. Hopefully Toney gets it right. Roach says he only sees Toney 3x a week; rest of the time he's with Blanks, the corny kickboxing movie star/Tae Bo guru/fitness expert.
I think we deserve to see Toney in some shape.
The big question will be Peter. Will be be 'damaged' from the last fight, i.e. ending up swollen up, unable to win by the KO he wanted? Or will he be better for the experience and a bit more educated?

Maskaev's boxing skills are a tad underated but I think the winner of this match will beat Oleg.
Peter by KO, Toney by Pts vs Maskaev.
Anyway, onto Saturday's fight. Hopefully the judging might be a bit fairer this time cause Toney was shafted. Don't think Big Sam can hurt him, so unless Toney "goes" overnight - I see it as a forgone conclusion.

All that is holding Toney back is his lack of conditioning, if he gets himself into shape he comprehensively outboxes the lumbering Peter a second time and gets the verdict.
P.S. Don't forget Peter even had a point off in the last fight as well and still won by mad scores of 116-111

i thought it was a close fight.
i had it 114-113, with the pt deduction swaying it toney's way.
the margins in peter's favour was the only scandal.
the result weren't.

It's all good saying should Toney come in in better shape, what about Peter?
257 was Peter's career heaviest. I reckon he will train properly this time wanting to rid the controversy of the first fight, he's still fairly young and hungry. With the extra experience he will put on a better show.
Toney is not getting any younger though his camp claim to have him on a 1500 calorie diet, I'll believe that when I see it.
Waiting for the weigh-in before I place my bet but I think we will have a very competitive rematch.

There is a first time for everything Max

Toney was robbed though.
I think I scored it 116-111 with the point deduction to Toney, know thats better than what Klitschko got on the official cards of 114-111.
People must of scored Peter's punches that went over Toney's head then because not that many clean ones landed except in the rounds Peter did win!
Toney's head movement still shouldn't of made people think Peter's punches landed clean enough to make It close.

In that case Peter must have won by agt least 120:107

It was still a very close fight because Toney was so poor over the last 4 rounds. Also I didn't give him a 2 point round because I didn't think he was winning the round in which he was rabbit punched. He did some fine boxer over the first 7 or 8 rounds but he definitely ended up feeling Peter's stremgth and power - Toney looked off balance, sloppy, disorganized, knackered by the end (although Peter looked beaten up). I felt Toney won, but not by much.
No matter his skills, his body has been breaking down since the McCline fight, his conditioning has been woeful and he shold be ashamed with the Rahman fight.

Peter 249, Toney 234!
By Karl Freitag at the scale
Samuel Peter outweighed James Toney by 15 pounds for their SHOWTIME-televised rematch on Saturday night at the Seminole Hard Rock LIVE Arena in Hollywood, FL. Toney weighed in first at 234, one pound more than the first fight, although his body looked to be in much better shape. Peter scaled in at 249, eight pounds less than in their first fight. The Peter camp selected Reyes gloves, while the Toney group selected Everlast.
I knew that "1500 calorie diet" was BS. Seems like Toney has missed a few training sessions too.
8lbs is not much for Peter but should give him that extra boost of stamina to keep up a prolonged workrate through 12.
No suprise that Peter is going for the "punchers gloves"
I don't think Toney can really improve on his first performance.

I thought Toney won handily first time. For my money Peter needed to offset his inferior skills by either outworking or stopping Toney. I can't see anything happening much differently this time, but with a different set of Judges I fancy Toney to edge it by 2 or 3 rounds.

Toney still appears to be in better condition. Maybe they knew losing a lot of weight would weaken him, or something. I'm no expert on nutrition or training, but after turning up in horrid shape for Rahman and Peter, and failing to win both, Toney must have gone through the proper steps to be proper fighting fit.

I'm going to stand on my own i think and go for Peter, he's got himself into great shape, i think he knows he couldn't substain his attacks in the first fight, so has worked on his stamina.
Peter on points again

I just read that Toney's camp are insisting that he wasn't 233 for the last fight, but 242. I'm not sure if they mean when he actually got in the ring, or if they think he was inaccurately weighed. Either way, there are insisting that they are lighter for this fight even though offically they are 1 lb heavier.
Whatever, this has to be better than the last time. We've only seen Toney's face - which looked a lot better - and if his balance and stamina are better then hopefully we're in for a clinic. Fingers crossed. & hopefully it wasn't all bloody weight training, as we know what trouble that got him into at the time of the Booker fight.

Toney looks in much better shape than last fight, He won last time on my card and will win by 3-4 rounds this time if the judges do there job properley.

Toney looks a lot more muscular than last time around, although he is certainly carrying a lot around his midriff, his shoulders and chest look like he has been working out pretty hard.
At Toney's age, I think he is unlikely to ever lose that gut now, but he looks a lot better than he did last time when he was really flabby and lacked muscle definition.

I don't think muscle is so great for Toney. I hope Blanks wasn't talking bollocks when he said about the cardiovascular work. All I've heard was stuff about bench pressing yesterday.
Muscle is what fvcked Toney up before.
Toney just needs to be fit and solid. I think all that extra weight hurts his upper body moement and hinders the speed of his right hand counter.
If only he could look the same as in the Holyfield fight. Why did the bugger save his best for a 40 something Evander and not the rest of the division?

I know, he looked awesome against Jirov and then Holyfield, in perfect fighting shape. Why can't he motivate himself to get in that kind of shape? If he was in the shape he was against Holyfield, I give him a shot at beating most of the current crop, including Wlad, Toney was very sharp and fast that night, and he really put a beat down on Holyfield, the body punching was superb that night.
Well, hopefully that muscle that has been added hasn't been just through lifting weights.

I wonder, how qualifed is Billy Blanks to train a fighter?
This guy won some kind of Karate medals in the late '70s, but was it even full contact Karate?
The most fighting I've seen him do was in the buddy action movies he starred in with Rowdy Roddy Piper - BACK IN ACTION, and TOUGH AND DEADLY.
