My original thread did not turn out to be very intereting as Jimmy Wilde was the too obvious choice. So let's try this one. Freddie Welsh for me.

I have Freddie Welsh at #1 ........ so Jimmy Wilde gets #2 for me ....... the width of a fag paper ahead of Jim Driscoll.
Even if all the urban myth about Wilde were true
...... Welsh more than measures up.

The first time I read it I thought it must be a joke ...... but sadly it isn't.
"knocking out former world middleweight champion Papke in three rounds a mere five months into his professional career."
The real Billy Papke was on a boat somewhere between Australia and the UK.
"Wilde’s heavy hands accounted for former world lightweight champion Joe Gans in five rounds "
The real Joe Gans had been dead for two years.
"Wilde embarked on an American tour in 1920 where he even engaged in a No Decision bout with future world heavyweight champion Jack Sharkey!"

Not so long ago, someone who should know better posted on this forum that the Dai Davies on Wilde's record was his father-in-law!!
It's easy to see how the bullshit stories perpetuate.
Wilde is a great fighter without all this nonsense ..... but still second to Freddie Welsh for me.

Think those should be the five names on everybodies top 5. Whether you have it in this very order is a bit more difficult.
Over course it is very unfortunately that with two of our finest fighters, Johnny Owen and Robbie Regan - never got to fulfil their obvious promise.
Please, Pundit if you are going to do a 3rd greatest Welsh fighter - please include Steve Robinson in the poll. He deserve to be ahead of some of these fighters included in this poll.
I'd have Stevo ahead of Percy Jones, Jack Peterson, Johnny Owen and maybe even Tommy Farr.
I'd also consider Dai Dower (especially), Dick Richardson and Robbie Regan comparable to the Percy Jones and Jack Peterson also.
