Now they want to get home advantage for Librado Andrade, as he challenges WBC/WBA champ Kessler...I'll bet they don't get it.

My worry is that they are running before they can walk. Look how many high profile partner/associates he has - Hopkins, Mosley, Barrera and Wright all have some role outside of boxing.

I do like the fact that they are using Mexico boxing and using "feeder" TV systems to showcast their stars. From Telefutura, to ESPN, to HBO, to PPV. Its a great that they are securing so many TV dates (and not just with HBO). I believe, Telefutura is a popular channel with the Hispanic community - so I just hope they don't sign an exclusive deal with HBO.

I was reading the article that BM had on it with great interest. I think Don King is very worried about their progress. I think he is smelling a fierce competitor to the Arum/King stranglehold. It is absolutely fantastic for the sport the way they are going about it so far.

As I said, the main problem will be when things start going a bit wrong. Like when the Five big fighters finally retire for good (DLH, Hopkins, Mosley, Barrera and Wright) - this SHOULD happen in 2008 tops. Then what, I don't know what salary they are on. Yes, he should have talent scouts - but such high profile ones - who also seem bias (Demetrius Hopkins).

Sugar Ray Leonard made a dream start to his promoting career. He had a potentially huge (and not that bad) Heavyweight attraction making a decent name for himself. He also Ben Dunne creating a bit of stir and regular TV dates (with ESPN). For some reason, he decided to call it quits. Was he running before he could walk? I hope DLH can be around in his 70's with Golden Boy as the successor to Don King Productions and Top Rank.

I think Golden Boy Promotions are good for the sport if the last Barrera-Juarez II card is anything to go by.

It's good that they're willing to pit the fighters that they sign up in with each other, & I like the idea of this upcoming Philippines vs Mexico card because there are some good potential matches.

However, what happened to the partnership with Hennessy, to showcase Froch and Witter?

Why are GB losing purse bids, giving away home advantage for their fighters (i.e. Ikeke-Abraham, Marquez-Harrison & the 3 Mexicans who have to take their WBO crowns to the Philippines)?

Also they don't seem so professional. Apparently de la Hoya doesn't even know the names of most of the fighters on his shows; they try & sign ppl left right and centre without checking if they're already in a contract (Mosley convinced Corrales into signing a contract without even checking that he still owed Gary Shaw a fight). They send out press releases for fights and for signing a fighter which then turn out to be cancelled...

When all is said and done I think GBP could do well.

If the personality of Oscar has anything to do with it then it looks promising.
Other than that the outlook will be much of the same for the next 5-10 years.
He looks like he has some good people behind him and seems to talk the truth.

Let's hope Oscar is the future.
If he isn't,we were in trouble before and could be in even deeper if he proves not to be.

My thread seems to have hit something.

Montiel has one fight left with GB, and the pissed off Mexican will be looking for a new promoter.

Up to 3 Mexicans will be risking their WBO crowns in the Phillipines, vs home fighters. GB didn't get the purse bid for this contest that has a competitive nationalistic edge to it - a Mexico v Philippines World Cup.

Already, Jhonny Gonzalez said he doesn't want to go over & fight the exellent Penalosa - the guy is recovering from a beating by Israel Vazquez and could do with a less tricky route back.

Penalosa is a GB fighter now also, signed a long term deal. So I don't think GB would particularly mind Gonzalez vacating.
