Yuri Romanov

I just saw Romanov's fight with Juan Carlos Diaz Melero, in Spain. it happened a couple of months ago. An absolute little classic. Romanov was having big problems and got dropped, then retaliated with a superb right hand to lay Melero flat out on his back in the 3rd.

He's now EBU champ and I think he can be a world class force.

Of course we remember him for the other great fight he had in 06, when Earl outworked him - when Romanov was ring rusty and Maloney did wonders for Earl getting that fight.

He also stopped Bobbie Vanzie a while back. This man has had some good form.

Does anyone have big expectations for Romanv in 07?

I've always liked the look of Yuri Romanov myself and picked him to beat Earl, but was wrong of course to do so. I still feel ring rust had a part to play in that result though.

When Romanov stopped Vanzie I really thought he was going to be a top contender at World level but his career has been very stop, start with periods of inactivity.

He is still quite young so maybe in 2007 he can make some noise at World level?

I hope so. He's had two genuine classics in 2006, away from home and I think he'll emerge better for the experience.

In the same way that Tszyu's struggle with Hector Lopez helped ready 'The Thunder From Down Under', I think Romanov's tough but ultimately rewarding 2006 will set him up for big things.

So long as he can control the tempo and distance of the fight, he's very hard to beat. Would love to see a rematch with Earl, and I think Romanov can get the W. Especially with Graham looking so woeful last time out.

How about it Frank? Doesn't Earl want that genuine EBU belt, instead of that naff WBU?

I scored the Earl fight to Romanov myself prefering his quality over Earls quantity. I think Romanov could be a world class player woith the right management. hes been handled very badly imo. He reminds me of Tyszu allot

But with Earl looking set to challenge M'baye I doubt it will happen in the near future.

Earl-M'baye's off - he's making a WBU defence after all that.
