Think the biggest ever live gate was Dempsey v Firpo, or something like that it was 110,000 I think.

Amazing to think that the first ever million dollar gate was a Jack Dempsey fight!

Even the UK record is way beyond what Calzaghe will get. Didn't McGuigan get around 40,000, and I'll bet there were British heavyweight title fights back in the day which got more than that.

The attendance at Bruno versus Ruddock wasn't high as it only occurred in your mind James.

I was at Bruno McCall and i don't reckon there was many more than about 25,000 there - they did a good job of making it look packed on TV.

Wasn't there 42,000 when Benn fought Eubank at Old Trafford?

Actually, here's the record.

In 1927, in the largest live boxing gate in history, 104,000 fans at Soldier Field watched Gene Tunney defeat Jack Dempsey in the famous “long-count” fight. The Chicago Stadium, opened in 1929, became an important boxing venue, hosting many major championship bouts.

Can't remember where Lewis v Ruddock was held to be honest.

I believe it was at London Arena.

The biggest ever live crpwd was a Chavez fight against Greg Haugen in 1993 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City which attracted over 132,000 fans. Lewis - Bruno was creatively accounted at 30,000 - but was probably nearer to 20,000. Bruno never fought Ruddock. The biggest recent fight was over 40,000 at Old Trafford on Benn-Eubank II.

Biggest Live audience in Britain i meant, sorry. It was 82'000 in 1939, Len Harvey vs Jock McAvoy, apparently.

I know thats not the biggest number on here today, but it shows how far boxing has dropped off the radar.

I am surprised that Zale v Pryor beat it out - cant remember hearing that before. Was it a paying gate or was there some other reason for the huge attendance??

I thought it was Chavez Haugen as well in Mexico City, interesting. I have the Chavez Haugen match and seeing the crowd itself is special and Chavez gave Haugen a brutal breakdown in that match.

i think it was fought during ww2 and it was free to get in for servicemen.
it was at soldier field in chicago if my memory serves me right.

My understanding was that Zale-Pryor was a free one in Milwaukee to gee up the troops. By the way, the referee was Jack Dempsey. Also I thought the attendance was an estimate from the police.

Haugen made some disaparaging remarks regarding mexicans and taxi drivers to hype the fight. That was a mistake!

Chavez was at his merciless best and dealt out an elongated, painful beating. Fantastic card all round that night as I remember it..
