Victorian Morality vs. Boxers' Skimpy Dress

It has always seemed a bit odd to me that in an age--where women wore skirts to their ankles, men full dress in almost every situation, and swimmers one-piece tanktops/shorts--boxers could get away wearing virtually nothing at times. I don't recall reading anything in the papers of the day where people demanded that boxers wear a bit more. Wasn't Billy Papke, for example, famous for wearing not much more than a jock strap into the ring? Here's an image of Harry Lenny.

>>>I doubt that Lenny appeared in public dressed like that. Short pants are one thing, but your butt hanging out? No.<<<

Check out some old time photo's of fights...especially Billy Papke...in ring photo's...his ass is hanging out just like this photo!

One of his fights with Ketchel below:

Dec---As I have told you time and time again...you really need to start looking into that era instead of always just assuming that you know what is going on because as is shown...yet again...you really have little clue about the era!

I am sure alot of people (the rich) probably viewed boxing as a primevil sort of entertainment, and the boxers dress back then probably harkened back to the gladitorial days. Thus putting it all in a sort of context. (if this makes any sense)

..check out jim corbett....in that filmed "fight" against courtney he's wearing little more than dental floss. the fight photos of him against fitzsimons arer usually from the front...but again his butt is as bare as cheeta's was in the old tarzan movies. no way to tell if it is as red....way before color photography.

..it occurred to me the other day that a neighbor of mine is british, so i knew he'd have a lot of pictures of naked men. i asked him to check in his collection for any old time fighters and he said he would...and in the meantime he mentioned a banatamweight from that old-time era named pedlar palmer who often fought in the skimpiest attire. if he finds any more, i'll pass them on.

I'm just glad I'm not British, or I might be offended.

Meg: Why don't you kill all the girls who are prettier than me?
Death: That would only leave England.
