This has been done before Im sure.
How about an update.

For me it was two guys:
Danny Lopez , what a warrior.
Carlos Palomino , class. He had a coolness in and out of the ring.
I wanted to be a fighter and carry myself like that guy.

Both Great fighters. Did you happen to see Danny fight Octavio Gomez? I had been asking that question of almost everyone here just before you arrived and apparently I'm the only one on the board who had seen both fights.

Always watched Palominos' fights as well.

Archie Moore and Ali were the fighters that got me interested. And I had no problem when they met, I knew what the outcome would be and was glad Ali gave him the shot.

Esteban De Jesus and Roberto Duran on their first fight.

For me probably Ray Leonard.

Didnt see the Gomez fights unfortunately.
Gomez beat him the first time they fought I believe.
I have seen many of Lil Reds other fights . My favorite would probably be the Mike Ayala bout.

I'm a young one so for me it was a combo of Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, and George Foreman, all of them in some way really drawing me in as a child.

Lewis, Benn, Eubank and ahem...Naseem Hamed, sorry but I was a kid and he was exciting.

My story is a bit different, as I was raised around fighters/fight talk and of course watching on television. What had me interested in boxing originally was how my grandfather used to tell me how during WW2 when he was in the Marines that he fought a three round exhibition with former MW contender, former LHW champion and HW title challenger Billy Conn.

The match was of some small significance, though is not listed on cyber boxing zone or other boxing sites that list exhibitions; as from what I understand my grandfather was the 'top' man in his group. Grandfather said that he didn't win, but went the three rounds it was scheduled.

The grandson of Billy Conn told me that it is quite possible that the match would have happened as Conn had numerous exhibitions, more than what is generally listed.

Other inspirational stories and figures was Dan Long, a friend of my fathers, who was the 'Toughman' champion in Sidney, Piqua and other neighboring towns, back when the 'Toughman' contests were not as well known and as popularised.

I am a young guy too, but I remember watching alot of George Foreman's fights when he came back, and I remember when Douglas became champion as it was huge news not just in the sports world, but in my home state of Ohio. Tyson was a huge phenomenon then, so he had me tuned in for his fights, and when I was 7yrs old I remember seeing Evander Holyfield at Planet Hollywood but unfortunately didn't get to talk to him, because of so much paparazzi around---I think it was at that time before the 1st Tyson-Holyfield fight.

And of course, the Rocky series lol I think that film inspired alot of us. So pretty much ever since I was old enough to understand what was around me, I been a boxing fan.

I must also drop down a story on my Grandfather. I remember him and my dad always arguing about who could have beaten whom, much like we do here lol. My grandpa stated that despite seeing George Foreman win back the title at 45 and seeing guys like Ali and Marciano and the whole lot, he felt that the greatest champion (HW) who ever lived was Joe Louis.

My dad would always say 'How can you say that? Joe Louis was so slow on his feet' and he'd argue that Louis didn't look that great on film, that he was a 'stalker' and all. My Grandfather would just remark 'Joe Louis was the greatest of all time! He could knock a man out with a 6" punch! From the waist up he was the most perfect fighting machine there ever was!'

How could you argue with that? lol

You can't really but I never really liked boxing when I was younger my dad would ask me to come and watch the fights and I would always tell him no Now his like I can't believe you actually waste money on DVD's My older sisters baby loves to fight with gloves his 2 But his left hook is on the same level of Curry.. or Frazier He has a pair of 6oz gloves but Prefers the 14oz lol

reminds me of my niece and nephew. from as old as they could walk, I've talked to them about boxing and taught them how to box in different styles and they box with eachother and I make them 'belts' because they want their own title lol. I must say, my nephew reminds me of a Jefferies type of fighter, can take alot (though I always tell him to be more defensive) with great endurance and packs a punch and my niece is so fast that she reminds me of an Ali type of fighter, but when she throws combinations just like a Louis. lol But with them getting older, its getting harder and harder for my niece (whose older than him) to actually compete with him. But the way I see it, if anything at all, boxing gives someone great discipline and confidence in yourself.

They wear the 16oz gloves lol I dont let them wear head gear though because there is a false sense of security with headgear (cuts off side vision, wasnt made for cushioning blows etc), but I let them wear it in 'sparring'. They love it though and always go 'when I become a boxer' or 'when I become a champ'. I tell them always if they sincerly wanted to get into boxing they would have to train harder than anyone else, because then you would have an edge in endurance and stamina; so if a fights scheduled for four rounds, train as if its for 10 etc.

Yes I suppose it's better if we use the PM system before the neighbors start complaining about your rambling lol When my nephew see's me im not lying we have to go look for the boxing gloves God help me If I take them off too early because then he attack's at will it's funny if I hit him softly or when he hits me I go down purposely and he starts giving me the count 1,2,3 LOL

When I was a kid my dad showed me old tapes of Ali, and that was really my first exposure to boxing.

Although I was a bit of a fan, I never really got into boxing during the Tyson era. In a more modern sense, Erik Morales was really the fighter that got me excited about boxing. I think the Zaragoza fight was the first fight of his I saw live, and it was what really got me into the sport.

Prince Naseem...I was only 13 when I sat up the whole night to see the Sanchez fight.

But also Mike Tyson and Shane Mosley got me interested in boxing.

Ali, but more specifically the cheesy Ali cartoon I used to watch when I was a kid.

The two Ali vs Spinks fights.


Then a few years later Marvin Hagler and in the UK Bruno, McGuigan and Honeyghan as time went by etc.

Gentlemen those stories are important historical boxing experiences, impressions and accounts, and indeed comply with all codes, bylaws and in fact honor the spirit of the forum.
