Having read much of the character of McCellan I have mixed feelings towards his cause. No I'm not 1 of those who says its karma or that he plain deserves it as I feel sad for him. I do however feel there are more worthy causes out there.

Like I say I have mixed feelings - seeing him today is very sadening, during his prime he was a cross between Hearns and Hamed, the stories about him sound pretty disgusting. Maybe he had a warped upbringing that made him unstable to do those thing, maybe some of the stories arent even true, who know.

I agree, if we are fans then we owe it to the people we cheer/boo to support them when things go wrong for them for no fault of their own.
I would not give a penny to mike tyson - hasnt he had enough of chances and money? but the g-man was an average guy (so therefore about as unsavoury as the rest of us, just speaking for myself), and it was not his fault what happened to him

Tyson never put his dog into a pit to be ripped apart.
The only reason I would go would be to meet John Mugabi. But then again I'd rather see him in the crowd at York Hall than pissed and ponced up in a penguin suit.

Okay, McClellan fought dogs. Some people hunt foxes, some watch men beat eachother.
If boxers could not talk, if it were boxing bears, we would fight them to the death as well.
Men would fight Bulls, Dogs and chickens still if someone had not said,
"no thats cruel, we must fatten them in a cage and eat them instead"
Tyson, meanwhile, is a convicted rapist.
Which do you value higher? the woman or the dog? (no jokes). My point was that Tyson has no need of a benefit night (not least because there is little wrong with him compared to McClellan), he has had vast sums of money over his career.
I agree with the point about meeting your heroes, but its a benefit night, the dinner etc is only laid on because they know no-one will respond to an advert saying 'give us a one-er'
Amd no, im not going, i have not got said one-er to my name at the moment, much less to spare.

Have you heard the stories - going to buy a lab and saying he'll take it to a good hom, taping the labs mouth shut and setting his pitt on it. The dog wouldn't even be able to defend itself as it was in agony torn limb from limb
What about shooting his pitt for losing, mowing down 100s of flamengos (was it flamengos?) with his hummer (may have been another car).
Dog fighting itself is sick, 2 dogs fight to the death without giving their consent or doing it for any reason other than to pleasure some sickos who find it entertaining. Men boxing isn't comparable because they choose to do it and get something from it.
At least if Tyson raped a woman (and thats a big if, if you look at the facts), he was doing it with the purpose of enjoying a woman and not for the sick pleasure of seeing a living animal with feelings in agony which was the case with McCellan. Tyson only hurts someone if they pose a threat to him thats the real difference.
When talking about women though McClellan is said to have beat numerous girlfriends to the extent of putting them in hospital
Ironically at the McClellan-Benn press conferance McClellan supposedly told Benns father he'd put Benn in his grave. The good guy won out in this battle though.

I've picked up my tickets for this. Anybody think there'd be a problem with me bringing my camera along to it? I know they are saying that people can get their picture taken with the fighters for a small fee that goes to McClellan but I'd just like to take some pictures of the night in general and the fighters around the place, not with me in them.

Yeah, if it were Benn in his shoes, I doubt McClelan would have organised something like this. As sad as his condition is, the guy was no good.
From the Observer interview it sounds like Gerald was a retard.

I respect your opinion, but I think if I continue I will only upset people, and thats not what I want to do.
Thanks for your opinion

Fair play to your Mikee, I noticed what you highlighted, and if you look at my first post on the matter I emphaises 'if whats said about him is true', we've all had people make up stories about us at 1 time or another.
Lets be honest though if whats said about him is true there are many a woman who didnt get beat on, animals that weren't abused, and who knows what violence he'd put on his fellow man not happened because of his weakened state. He sounds like a nutt by all account and maybe those accounts are true or fabricated we don't know but the evidence is that he was violent nut case.
The quote about 'putting Benn in a coffin' we could probably verify. Lets not forget McCall saying he was going to get revenge for McClellan by killing Bruno or something to that effect - not sure about the validity of that either actually as I read it on my paper round on the back of a tabloid.

McCall did say that, remember it vividly way back in 95. His mouth was running and saying all kinds of crazy things. Said he was going to disable Bruno for him cheering Benn on when McClellan got injured.
I understand peoples views on McClellan, seeing footage of him nowadays its impossible not to feel sorry for him. But in all honesty when he was fully functional i agree he wasn't just not very nice, he sounded like a dangerous nut and his regard for other life was nonexistant. Hmmm.
Sounds like it will be a great night though buddy.

I agree with the point about the if the roles were reversed - it being Benn who was in Gerald's position, one wonders whether a benefit evening would have been arranged?
I also feel we should also remember it takes some bottle to meet up with someone who's life you have dramatically changed forever i.e. in that this is the first time Benn/McClellan will come together since their epic battle nearly 12 years ago.
I respect Nigel a lot. In the latest edition of Boxing Monthly, Benn tells how Gerald's family did not like him etc, because of what happened. Obviously, it's very sad what happened to McCllelan, but I hope their is no animosity from Gerald's family towards Benn during the evening or in general.
