Witter to Hatton: Give Britain what it wants

Witter to Hatton: Give Britain what it wants

Many reasons why Ricky Hatton won’t fight WBC light welterweight champion Junior Witter have been offered, but his long-term rival is exposing them one by one. Two potential major obstacles, however, still remain: Ricky Hatton and time.

Hatton’s next opponent remains unclear. Having both appeared on the same Vegas show last month, the plan appeared to be for the IBF champion to fight Mexican Jose Luis Castillo in June.

Both, however, failed to impress. This was followed by an announcement last week from the IBF stating that Hatton had to next face the winner of their final eliminator between Lovemore N’Dou and Nafoeul Ben Rabah on Sunday.

Whilst Hatton’s promoter Dennis Hobson reportedly informed the IBF that his charge would meet this request - suggesting the defence could happen in the UK - it appears that former Witter victim N’Dou may not be next in line despite forcing Rabah to quit on his stool at the start of the 12th.

Hobson has since stated that Castillo may still come first if he can agree a step aside deal with the new mandatory contender. Amongst all the confusion Witter, who became the first ever-British fighter to hold a WBC title at 140lb last year, believes Hatton should turn in his direction.

“I think Hatton needs to grow some balls, forget all the politics and just give everyone the fight they want,” began Witter. “Him and his team say I bring nothing to the table. They say US TV doesn’t want to show me. We all know that’s bullshit.

“That was shown again when Hobson said Hatton would fight the winner of N’Dou-Rabah. I heard Hobson said that the fight could happen at the City of Manchester stadium, although the quotes seem to have been removed from the website they were on.

“How does that add up? How can I be off Hatton’s radar and not acceptable for TV when he is prepared to defend a world title against a fighter I dominated two years ago in just an eliminator?

“If they go for Castillo first, what’s the point? He is a blown up lightweight who hasn’t properly established himself at 10 stone. He only got by Herman Ngoudjo on a split. There won’t even be a major title on the line - Castillo isn’t even ranked by the IBF. There can be no way the IBF would grant another exception as they did for Hatton-Urango and allow N’Dou to reach a step aside deal.

“It looks like nothing is set in stone for Hatton so why doesn’t he cut to the chase and give something back to the public who helped put him where he is? This is the biggest fight out there for Britain and the biggest fight for him. He can’t argue with the facts:

>> I am a British fighter holding the WBC belt. The most prestigious belt. A belt he has never won.

>> We could achieve one of the biggest gates in British Boxing history if we went somewhere like the near 50,000 capacity City of Manchester Stadium.

>> The Sky Pay Per View figures could potentially break all records.

>> HBO could still be accommodated on either a live or delayed basis.

>> Hatton will make far more money fighting me than Castillo or N’Dou.

>> We have the longest rivalry in boxing today.

>> His trainer says he would like to give me ‘a beating’ because he ‘hates’ me, but Hatton is worried about giving me a pay-day. Well here is the solution: winner takes all. He can give me a good beating for nothing.

“Nothing else makes sense for Hatton apart from this fight, unless he is scared. Unless he knows what I do, that I will knock him out. If he decides he wants it, the only other issue is timing.

“There is a window of opportunity here, but if we are not careful we are going to miss it and this fight will never happen.”

“If we are going to meet, it has to be this summer. This fight has to take place in a football stadium. It makes sense to go to his backyard and I have never had a problem with doing that.

“That obviously can’t happen in the winter and if anyone thinks this fight can wait until 2008 they are badly mistaken. Someone will have caught up with Hatton by then. If he wants the biggest fight of his career, he has to step up now.

“I suspect he won’t. That’s fine. I can concentrate on securing my own legacy without having the fact that I avoided potentially the biggest fight in British Boxing history on my conscience.

“But if he doesn’t, I think he has to go down as a bottler. I know he’s just had his annual ‘s**t shirt’ competition, but perhaps it should have been ‘s**t pants’ instead, as he would have won that hands down this year. That’s all he seems to do when my name is mentioned.”

Winner takes all sounds about right...if Witter loses he doesn't get a payday. I like the sound of this arrangement.

I can see people ragging on Witter for this statement. But the fact is hes chasing down the biggest challenges he can get. He isn't looking for just the payday - I think Witter would take this fight for peanuts.

We all know Hatton isn't fighting Witter because of the risk-reward issue. And no matter what all of the Hatton fans say theres a good chance Hatton loses and thats why it never happened. Consequently no way Hatton goes from not taking a 75% purse against Witter to risking losing with no money for his troubles

I forgot to mention we all know this is written by Henessey and not Witter

Give Britain what it wants: Er, surely that's Hatton/Mayweather... not Hatton/Witter.

>> I am a British fighter holding the WBC belt. The most prestigious belt. A belt he has never won.

Actually the WBC belt means sod all at 140.

>> We could achieve one of the biggest gates in British Boxing history if we went somewhere like the near 50,000 capacity City of Manchester Stadium.

Hatton could achieve that gate with no help from Witter.

>> The Sky Pay Per View figures could potentially break all records.

Yeah, people tuning in to watch Hatton...

>> HBO could still be accommodated on either a live or delayed basis.

And?

>> Hatton will make far more money fighting me than Castillo or N’Dou.

N'dou yes, but Castillo?

>> We have the longest rivalry in boxing today.

Well Witter has got to start impressing in the ring as well , His last fight was pretty dire IMO, Arturo Morua was possibly the weakest and most passive challenger for the WBC title there has been

Im fed up of it myself. He has only just emerged onto the world scene by beating another 'barely world class' fighter in 'chop-chop' corley (what sort of name is DaMarcus btw?), and all of a sudden he is calling out Hatton.

Should have took your big chance, like hatton did. Maybe hatton has not done all he could, but Artuo Morua? give me a break, hes staking no claim to greatness there is he.

Witter needs to fight Castillo or similar IMO to give him the leverage that Hatton has gained by beating Tyszu.

I could be wrong....

Well, as the Castillo fight appears to be happening now (although that could of course change), let's see Witter beat the Harris-Lazcano winner, hopefully looking good at the same time, and then get it on at the end of the year.

To be fair mate, thats utter bollocks. The truth is that Witter has been calling out Hatton for many, many years. In fact I can remember Witter face-to-face challenging Hatton, as Hatton gave a ringside interview to Sky immediately after beating Jon Thaxton for the British title...nearly 7 years ago!!

Fair play to you, i was not aware that happened. Myabe its just the impression i get, becasue since he won the belt he has gotten REALLY vocal about it. Any complaints with the rest of the analysis? lol

The rest of it is damn fine stuff! :TU:

But seriously, I heard talk of Witter mentioning a potential fight against Corrales. As you eluded to, its a big sort of fight like that, that Witter should go after.

Though I must admit I dont tire of Witter's verbal bashings of Hatton - British boxer is starved of world-class domestic show-downs. And if Hatton is the reason for preventing such a long-awaited one from happening, then why shouldnt Witter remind him and the public just exactly who is, and who isnt prepared to make the fight?

Witters no PBF is he, lol, he probably whispers sorry after giving the interview, lol.
Corrales or Castillo, or Gatti would be big fights for Witter, and IF he wins against one of them, i will go and get ricky in the ring at gun-point for you all.

And as for witter being prepared to take the fight - he says he'll have it. Us fight fans have been round long enough to know that fights dont happen for all manner of reasons. Witter might have said ' winner takes all ' , but he (or hatton, to be fair) can always find a way out of a fight.

not established at 10 stone? except for fight nights (and sometimes not then) Corrales is bloody well accustomed to it lol

...Which is more than can be said for Hatton!!

To be honest, I think pretty much everybody knows who wants the fight, and who doesnt.

Would Hatton earn more fighting Witter than fighting Castillo?

Posted: 06 Feb 2007, 12:14
by stujones
Nice and sly by Witter, Junior knows there is no chance the fight is happening in the summer. If its not going to be Castillo, a much bigger (and IMO better) fight then it will be his mandatory.

What Witter should be focusing on is his own career, find out what is happening about Hatton vs Castillo. If its off, then there is a surely a way for Witter to get his name mentioned in the states by fighting and beating El Matador.

ANY win over Castillo (aslong as its fair) will get the green light from HBO for Witter vs Hatton.... plus if Hatton does go for Ndou it will be a unification fight.

Quite fancy Witter to beat Hatton as it happens.

Witter doesn't exactly get the chance to pick and choose his opposition. Look at Hatton's last foe - a lucky title holder with a record little better than Morua's.

Junior was Mayweather's top contender after beating N'dou - the guy Hatton might fight next - and then Branco pulled out of a "WBC final eliminator" vs Witter.

Hatton gets the luxuries, Witter's lucky to get the scraps. Hatton can even get away with dull showings so long as he puts on his "amiable," "cheeky chappie" routine.

The Hatton-Witter debate has been going on for half a decade and there's ONE reason it isn't happening...Hatton. He's brushed it off regardless of the circumstance...Junior needs to win a major belt (check)....Junior can't look boring (then what did you look like the other week, Ricky? Exciting?)...

Hatton fights this and that anonymous titleholder and we have to pay for it if we want to watch a fight that should be taken for granted.

You say he should fight Castillo - JLC just won a WBC elim yet he is fighting Hatton.

Big chance? Cotto at a week's notice. Sure he should've taken it. Or was it Judah while Witter was a novice pro?

witter is talking sense, he knows hattons performances and hattons fans are at a junction, there have never been so many dissalusioned mumblings from hattons fans as there are now.

i say lets do it, hatton has said the castillo fight can wait till the autumn, and witter has blown his other arguament reference money out of the window.

come on ricky, junior is up for it, why arnt you?

Even though Witter's not a huge draw, who outside of hardcore fans In Britain would choose Hatton/Mayweather over Hatton/Witter? Even casuals here have heard of Witter more than Mayweather.

Hatton's a millionare already doesn't matter If he makes more fight Witter or Castillo.

Hatton wouldn't achieve a 50,000 gate without the right opponent and thats Witter, even Hatton said he ever got to fight at that staduim an opponent like Witter would do It.(He said It on a video interview off his own website)

Outside of Mancs, who would mostly tune In for Hatton? I'd tune In for both.

Is the WBC better than the WBA and IBF?

HBO would choose Witter If they stick Fana fighting Barrera on PPV.

Hatton is ducking Witter no doubt about it. Can't believe he is considering fighting N'dou (whether that be next or after Castillo) that is just ridiculous.

He's had no trouble dropping belts before why would he fight N'dou rather than lose another title other than an easy money fight.

Cant see why Hatton would duck Witter, he knows that his workrate would be enough to last the early rounds and bag enough of them to win comfortably. Just cant see Witter havign enough in the tank to stop a marauding Hatton.

That said, after the Castillo fight (plenty of cash and more name recognition) if he cant get PBF or Cotto then surely the Witter fight would be the best option. Look for Hatton to fight Witter when it makes the most sense and not seen as a big step down, or at least away from, the superstars.

Plus there will be more call for the fight if Witter can beat Harris or Lazcarno, I cant see him (witter) fighting Corrales as there is just no real reaosn for Corrales to fight him, there are other opponents with better names and more cash.

Thank christ you're not a promoter mate, you'd lose your shirt.

Hatton v Mayweather would be a far bigger sell than Hatton v Witter.
Most people didn't know who Kostya Tszyu is either, but that didn't stop them flocking to the MEN to see Hatton fight did it? It's about selling the fight, not neccesarily the fighters, you really think that Hatton couldn't draw a crowd to fight the guy regarded by many as the #1 fighter on the planet right now?

Hatton isn't going to get a 50,000 gate anywhere, there isn't an active fighter in the world who can draw a crowd like that, well, perhaps Barrera could in Mexico City, but those days for British fighters are long gone, and in Vegas they are lucky to get 10,000 in an arena.
