Has anybody else noticed that boxers seem to make it known their affiliation to their football teams much more than the used to? or have they always done this?

i.e Hatton and City, Khan and Bolton

I think its always been about, but only a few fighters have ever done it big-style.

Its only cos hatton and Khan are public faces we actually know about it.

Plenty of East London fighters, Kevin Mitchell, Rocky Dean, are WHU fans, some fighters come into the ring to 'bubbles'. I dont really know about other teams/boxers

Lennox Lewis is a West Ham fan (like all the best people lol), but he never made a thing out of it in terms of his boxing

I know a boxer Lee Jones Jr who trains with Richie Woodall and he said that Richie advises them NOT to mix boxing with football as it does cause friction with fans. I know a few boxers who are football fans but choose not to wear their teams colours and come out to songs for this reason. In the midlands though we have Deano Harrison and Rob Kenney who come out to wolves songs wearing the gold n black, Wayne Elcock wears his blues shorts and Wayne Downing has had his shorts with 'baggies' on !

watson wore arsenal colours in the 2nd fight and eubank wore spurs.

don't think eubank was a spurs fans though was he.

TBH I gave up with football when it became like medicine, ( taken 3 times daily ) So now I only follow England, but in the old days I was silly enough to follow Leeds.

Not many Leeds fans left now hey mate ! They all jumped ship !

Wise move by Richie. Nothing worse than seeing a bunch of football fans following a boxer because he wears the colours. They tend to know little about boxing or the guy they're supposed to be following and can wind the situation up outside the ring along old football hostilities.

I seem to recall Juventus fan Calzaghe wearing a Newcastle shirt into the ring for the Pudwill farce, sorry 'fight'. I think everyone in the crowd figured it for a publicity stunt as well, because I'm sure he got some boo's.

As far as I'm aware it's not a recent thing. I think fighters will always want to tap into the big support of football fans local to where they live.

m1kee50, Steve Roberts also tapped into the hammer's fans support. He was a massive fan if I remember correctly. Plenty of boxers seem proud to follow West Ham. Don't know why though.

Its the old east end west Ham thing i suppose. Huge boxing area is the east end and most of em follow the hammers. I thought it was rich about Woodall cuz he made us all know he was a baggy !
