Froch to face International Opponent



Tickets have gone on sale for the Hennessy Sports promoted ‘Cobra’s Hood’ event at the Nottingham Arena on Friday March 23rd featuring British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

The local hero will feature in a 12 round International championship weight contest to be shown live on Sky Sports against a highly ranked opponent to be announced shortly.

“I had hoped to make another defence of my British Title by knocking out Robin Reid,” said the unbeaten Froch yesterday. “As a former world champion that would have been a good scalp on my record, but he’s bottled it so I will be looking to build on my International experience

“I am ready to step up now and I would like to be challenging for a world title later this year. I could fight for the European, but there are a lot of politics around the super middleweight title at the moment and I don’t want to get held up.

“I am already number three in the world and there are some massive fights out there for me. My next opponent will be a major step towards them.”

The chief support contest sees the highly regarded junior Olympic gold medal winner John O’Donnell taken on fellow undefeated prospect Stuart Elwell for the vacant English welterweight championship. History making WBC Youth Champion and 2006 Boxing Writers’ Young Boxer of the Year John Murray also appears.

There is further Championship action with Tyan Booth taking on Darren Gethin for the Midlands Area welterweight championship. A host of other local fighters also appear. A full bill follows.

A top international opponent with a maximum of 4 weeks notice. No doubt Froch has been in training for this date for a while.

As much as I cheered for Magee and Dodson when they fought him, I do have a lot of respect for Froch as a fighter. He's not the type to back down from a challenge and he doesn't try to fool the fans by attempting to square off against hand picked opponents. As much as he mouths off, his fights are usually always interesting and he's one of the few British fighters I would genuinely look forward to seeing in the ring.

Well froch has pretty much cleaned up his British challenges, so this next fight makes sense , would probably be someone like Fernando Zuniga.
Competitive but unlikely to cause an upset.

Yes, it's hard not to like Froch, whatever his flaws, he seems to genuinely want to take on the best opponents out there, and is prepared to back up his big mouth, which is all I ask. When he says he's going to bash someone up, he generally does, rather than turn in an stultifyingly negative performance.

I am a fan of Froch too - he is a bit open and a bit mouthy but he brings the action and has backed his mouth up thus far.

He is exciting to watch and I for one want to see him mix in world class soon. It will be interesting tioo see who the bring in. Might go to this one if they can find him a decent name foe..

How about Eric Teymour....assuming he's still boxing, doesn't seem as active as he once was ? Pretty decent boxer, strong, reasonable punch and has some experience.

Bute is too hot for the type of opponent Froch's people are looking for and would he want to come into Froch's back yard anyway? I doubt it.

Bika, possibly. I think Sakio right now is made for Commonwealth title level. He's also well rated by the IBF and holds one of their regional titles. He's coming off a win over Andre Thysse, on the undercard to N'dou-Rabah.

Actually, Froch could do a lot worse than take on Sakio Bika.

Bika would be a solid win on the record, but to the public he's just the bloke Calzaghe strolled past.

Looking at the rankings, there are lots of good fights in the top 15. Andrade, Dann, Green, Bute and Mundine.

Sergey Tatevosyan.

Good one, very interesting.... Toughest test yet for Carl. Sergei offers something different and is very very durable.

Creates an automatic comparison to Bute, since that fight was so recent. If he can take out Sergey before the distance, then his stock will rise. Anything less than a dominant decision, and he'll fall back.

Sergei is a slippery bastard, could be a hard one this. I remember him making eastman look like absolute shit several years ago.

Of course beaten an undefeated EBU Champion (never lost the title in the ring) and the current Champion at Super Middle fairly recently.

I disagree with Emile.... I think a win is what Froch should be focusing on and not the manner of it. I give Sergei a bit of a chance here - Froch will be favourite, but this is a tough fight to call.

Sergei I think is still a geniune top ten Super Middle.

Certainly Stu, Froch himself must concentrate on simply winning. I'm only suggesting that this fight will provide a good measuring stick for us in the Americas, who have not seen him fight.

He`s almost 30yrs old, when is he going to face a real test though?

Magee...good domestic and capable european...but world level...no way.

Porras...not likely, Juergen Braemer stopped him 1 rnd quicker, and after only 6 competitive rnds after coming back from almost 3yrs away from the game.

Who was comfortably beaten by Eastman and Bute

Tatevosyan is an OK opponent, he's tricky comes with some ambition, and is durable. He has the abilty to make Froch look bad.
Tatevosyan seems to know his level, nearly everytime he's stepped up to around top level he's lost, except the KO of Markussen.
In his fight with Bute, he was willing to give away alot of the rounds once he had tasted Bute's power, but still tried to give it a go in the later rounds.

This is a good fight for Foch provided his next fight after this one is a step up too, I'n not saying he should rush but time is not on his side.
