One that springs to mind was light-welterweight Frankie Warren. He went 25-0 (17kos) defeating Ronnie Shields, Buddy McGirt and Gene Hatcher on the way. He then got stopped in the 12th by McGirt in the rematch. He won his next 5 fights (3 by ko) beating Micky Ward in one fight before losing on points to Loreto Garza where he detached his retina and was forced to retire.

Anyone got any others?

The great Argentinian middle Rafael Merentino, the Brazilian fly Servilho de Oliveira, the Uruguayan light Santos Pereyra, the Peruvian light heavy Mauro Mina, the Japanese fly Kiyoshi Tanabe, all they due eye troubles; the legendary Argentine light heavy José Carattoli, with serious problems in his best arm, the left; the Brazilian unbeaten middle champion Milton Rosa, after his first lost, by KO to Paulo de Jesus, due serious injuries he was hospitalized and must retire as fighter. And more others, of course. Of this boys, Merentino, Mina, Pereyra, Carattoli and Tanabe could be greatest in their weights in their times

Good call on Leotis John.

I wonder what Leotis would have done next, how his career would have panned out? A fight for the title with Smokin Joe or a match up with returning Ali would have been a natural after slaying The Bear so dramatically.

Aaargh, such a shame.........

Richie Sandoval looked to be headed for greatness after that one sided beating he gave Jeff Chandler, but a little less than 2 years later, he got demolished by Gabby Canizales, and after a brain scan was strongly advised to retire.

Andy Nance W 24 (14 ko's) | L 1 | D 2 | Total 27

Ranked #4 in the world Andy was signed to fight for the 140 lb. title in 1987. He withdrew due to results of tests because of headaches and never boxed again.
