If the stories about McClellan and his pitbulls are to believed, he was not a nice man. But he contributed to a great fight.... perhaps the best we have seen in a British ring. Fighters know tragedies can happen, and they will happen again. As compasionate human beings, fighters and supporters of boxing, we owe it to those who wind up in a bad way to try and provide. This dinner tomorrow was something Nigel wanted to do, and I say good luck to him. He is trying to give McClellan help. I just hope the animal rights guys don't ruin it, because nobody is condoning dog fighting. Boxing is just trying to help one of its own.

I am a firm believer in the saying "I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy"... I hope the Animal Rights activists who are threatening this event are so aswell. Cause I wouldn't wish what The G man is going through (even if it was his own free will to step into the ring) on my worse enemy.

He was a young man, and yes even though the stories I have heard are a bit disgusting - perhaps he might have changed his ways when he mellowed with age.

Gerald might have "reaped what he sowed" with his condition, he has suffered enough - I just hope it goes smoothly.

Big security there, so please God because Gerald needs this to be a good night. People are saying, " a tribute night" but it is more than that. It is a night to help a human being.

As Barry McGuigan said - at least two human beings. Nigel needs this more so than Gerald IMO. Also, Geralds family need to know the grief Nigel has gone through - because they have at least once thought he had no remorse at all.

If I saw someone abusing an animal, I would possible lose it and try & kill whoever. Hate to say it - it's not PC etc - but you got your comeuppance, Gerald. Evil bloke.

I wouldn't go that far. He is after all a human being ( alledgedly ) But I think we should all remember that at least he had a referee and a doctor on hand, even if the medical support was inadequate in those days. The dogs only have a load of evil scum baying for their blood. Certainly no vet on hand.

Also Benn didn't have 3inch razor sharp teeth ripping into McCellans neck.

If I found out about someone going to the pet shop and buying dogs, taping their mouths shut and leaving them to be slaughtered in a basement, let's just say I'd do something to the owner that'd get me put away for 15 years.

Sorry but I have zero sympathy for Gerald. He was a cold blooded bastard. I feel sorry for Gerald's family, having to give up their lives practically to give him constant care. They deserve a financial break and I hope the benefit night does some good.

To be honest Maussa, if you wanted to find out, you could. Because no matter where you live there will be scum that do these things within a 50 mile radius of you. Talking about being locked up for 15 years is easy. Doing the time is a different thing altogether.

well, if i saw it happening I'd certainly intervene, & I would do something that would put me in more trouble than I can handle.

Terence wrote:If these PETA pricks really cared shouldn't they be out in Bolton or places like that trying to stopt his thing going on.

I'm sure the protest is a big comfort to the mum and dad dogs of the animals that were allegedly hurt but in the long run it achieves nothing to protest a fund-raiser.
Yeah but you are a cynical devil Tel. I have had the pleasure of reading your theories on dogs and their abilities, and thought capacity. I tend to accept that you are right. The fact is though that even if it is natural for them to fight, it is unnatural for them to be put in enclosed spaces to do so with no means of escape or relief, for the pleasure of sub humans.

I think the issue with the protesting loonies, is not that McClellan participated in such vile entertainment, that is a given. It is the celebration of that type of person that they are screaming about.

If we are to celebrate sub human behaviour, where does it end? Perhaps a holiday in Iraq on the anniversary of the day Saddam gassed all those poor Kurdish people. EVEN THE THOUGHT OF SUCH A THING IS DIABOLICAL. I have no time for protesters per se, but some people really do have ideals that they take to the extreme.

Well it's not your sympathy he needs is it?

Even if he was one of the millions out there that is/was cruel to dogs, did he really deserve, as some people are saying, the life time nightmare he's been living through for the past 12 years?

Of course not.

Maybe bomb Korea while we're at it.

And who's to say he was cruel to dogs? I mean, who EXACTLY is saying this? Some bum trainer with a grudge he worked with in the past?

Gerald was cold blooded in the ring, that's for sure, like all the greats.

why dont you just start a dog-fighting thread in Other Sports, rather than divert every thread with the name Mclellan in it?

Anyone who does that is fu cking low. If he did, it was a case of swings and roundabouts. Why gloss over it? Is it acceptable to buy dogs to feed to your fighting dog?

Like I say, it's McClellan's FAMILY that I feel for.

I haven't got anything bigger than a cherry bomb. Will that do?

As it happens I am one of the guilty party's, so I will apologise and desist after this post.
However it was Gerald himself that boasted about his fighting dogs, and how he would buy other dogs to feed to his, just to keep them mean and in fighting shape.
I have at no time thought he deserves the suffering he has had, and nor would I. But the fact remains, some extremists have very strong views on these kind of things, and they do demonstrate, and generally try to cause trouble at public events.

Gerald had a choice, he knew the risks of boxing and chose to box.

The dogs dont know the risks of dogfighting and had no choice. Gerald forced them to fight.

In the case of the labrador he bought and mowing down dozens of flamengo's in his hummer, show that he was capable of astonishing acts of pre-meditated cruelty to animals. He obviously got a kick out of it, so in the end I would say yea, McClellan got what he deserved.

If there was something good to come out of the whole saga it would be that GM was no longer able to carry on with his animal cruelty and sick hobbies outside of the ring. No one deserves to be turned into a vegetable for life but there's not a whole lot of sympathy for the man, which says quite a lot.

Anyway his family have paid for this more than anyone and no doubt they could do with a little help so i hope it raises a few quid for them.

Thought people might be interested to know that there were 1200 people there at this dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel paying £100 a head. The auction raised in excess of £101,000 with the biggest single lot being a world featherweight championship belt, donated by Naseem Hamed, which raised £21,000. Don King and allegedly each pledged to pay $25,000 direct to the McClellan family. John Rawling gave a recollection of the night's events. Champions there included Frank Bruno, Chris Eubank, Duke McKenzie, Alan Minter, Colin McMillan, Johnny Nelson, Junior Witter, Billy Schwerr, David Haye, Jon Thaxton, Henry Wharton, Paul Ingle, Billy Hardy, Clinton McKenzie, Jim McDonnell. McClellan, was brought into the hall in a wheelchair, but was overcome by the moment and the ovation he received and made only a brief appearance. Poor man is still in a very bad way.

Fair play to Naz, donating a belt.

It does make me laugh (rather bitterly I must add) when people keep bringing up the dog buisness about Gerald, Jesus, are we expecting all fighters to be saints now??... I'm sure if you looked through the private lives of many famous fighters you'd find quite a few skeletons... some who beat their wives, others who supported the Natzi's, some that liked children etc etc... are we to believe that Gerald is the most evil man whose ever stepped into a ring??... now I'm a animal lover, I despise cruelty to any animals, but I think anyone who condemns Gerald yet was happy to watch him fight in the ring is nothing short of the worst type of hypocrite... to those saintly handwringers I'd say that maybe you should question the morality of watching boxing at all??... is it really that far removed from dogfighting??....

Quite right.

The evening is all about the boxing fraternity coming out in solidarity for one of their own who was tragically incapacitated. Regardless of what one thinks about McClellan, the man, boxing is the winner here.
