Paulie Malignaggi last night

What did everyone think of Malignaggi last night- thought he looked good, definate shade of Hector Camacho (in both his flamboyant appearance and boxing style). Nice to see him being honest about his performance, Edner Cherry is not a bad fighter (who looks a fair amount like Glencoffe Johnson) and he won every round on my card.
Is he going to what I think might happen to Ricky Burns at domestic title level.... always be a brave loser, but not quite enough power or work rate to turn into a winner (of course I'm talking World title level with Malignaggi)? I would love to see him involved with the two Brits soon. He has the style to give Hatton problems and he has the speed and workrate to give Witter problems.
Its tough to tell with Malignaggi - perhaps he just missed out on his best chance at world title honours last time out.... but he is one the Brits should avoid (I don't want to see them avoid him mind).
Nice to see Sky showing 3 good looking fights on paper in full in a decent show last night... keep it up. The last two delayed broadcast have been impressive in the amount of the footage they have shown.

Last night? I saw this fight a week ago. I presume the highlights of this fight were shown somewhere?
He is a poor man's Camacho. Great reflexes and movement but he has even less power than Camacho. Nevertheless I wouldn't be surprised if he wins a world title against a weaker champ. A fight against Ndou for the IBF title would be a good option for him. I would also like to see him face Witter, it'll give 'dancing on ice' a run for its money

You gotta respect his attitude though. Not up himself unlike some, he'll admit when he doesn't put on a great display and says he's not quite ready for the likes of Hatton.
I thought he put on a decent performance, controlled the fight with good movement and his jab. He's already proven he can take a good punch, he has the talent to cause an upset against one of the weaker champs.
Needs a few more fights at 140 against top 20 opposition first though.

It was shown on Sky last night.
Jim Watt didn't give him a chance vs Torres - I would, Malignaggi's chin is sound and Torres can be outboxed quite easily. He was in his last fight on my card and Arnoutis isn't as good as Malignaggi.

I agree with your take Stu.
The lack of power is a huge drawback for a fighter looking to win a world title. If he can't keep fighters off him, especially in a talent rich division, then he's never going to cut it long term at the top.

the power issue is the thing, he has the skills to pay the bills as it were, but you do need a bit of a bang with it

First of all. How old is he? I was just thinking about Steward. Rumour has it he can teach guys how to punch harder. I remember Oscar saying Manny got him to punch harder, and then there is the well documented Tommy Hearns lack of punch when he first started in the pro's.

26, with 23 fights, 5 KO's. he needs to get busy if hes going to develop power now IMO. Maybe he can imporve his punch, and if he does, IMO he is skilled enough to be top of the pile by the time he is 30

The problem is that he already looks like he's planting his feet, sitting down on his punches, and not bouncing around like he used to do, but there's still nothing there. He's another McCullough, there's tons of other things that are done well, but that one fault is the difference between being a challenger, and being a champion.
I'm not sure that any trainer could make that much of a difference to Malignaggi, but from his point of view, it would be worth a try.

How did I think he looked?Crap. Why did Sky bother - this wasn't an interesting card. The only fight I wanted to see was Berto-Tackie, but Tackie went & pulled out! Apart from Taylor and Berto, Dibella's stable STINKS.
If Sky don't get into the March action, if they don't keep showing Cotto & middleweight fights RELIGIOUSLY (they didn't show Cotto-Quintana and they backed out of Pavlik-Zertuche) I will think about cancelling.

I had the Malinaggi-Cotto fight much closer than the scorecards. He really gave Cotto problems and outboxed him but Cottos punches were far more effective. If he had the power or size to keep Cotto off he could have pulled that 1 off. But 'ifs' and 'almosts' don't count for much.

He was tough and fast and awkward. I had Cotto an 8-4 winner, plus the KD.
Cotto was badly drained but then again he had a weight advantage on the night.
I just can't see why we got a LOCAL INTEREST, NOO YORK fight card. Can't fathom it. Obviously was a budget buy from the cheapskates at Sky. We didn't even get one good fight last Fri. Though I guess we saw DiBella's experiment at bringing in a Contender guy to apparently boost ratings.

Yeah i reckon it is worth a try also. You never know there might just be a small problem with his technique.

As that fight with Aaron Pryor shows, Hearns had the style but didn't really know how to throw a right hand as a 17 year old. It was only a matter of time before someone started to turn that shot into something lethal.
Looking at the style of Malignaggi I'm not sure how anyone could get significant punching power improvements out of him.

Maliongaggi would be outgunned by a spudgun.
