The second fight was a chilling example of what a man can do to another, save all weapons but his fists, when perfectly groomed and tuned to the sweet science.
The first fight was a marvelous example of how ring science, ring smarts, can over come even the most 'invincible' of opponents. Schmeling studied Louis constantly on film, writing down notes. 'I see something,' is all he would say before his bout with Louis. What he saw is that Louis left his right hand down too low when he threw a jab.
1936 was when Schmeling said he was at his best, Louis would say that 1938 was at his. Nonethless, both fights are terrific examples of both sides of the spectrum: ring science and ring violence.

very good analysis!
For the 1936 fight... a lot of people say Schmeling won, only cause he saw Louis jab-failure. That's right, but it took much more to beat Louis the way Schmeling did I suppose. Louis still was very dangerous at the beginning and later in the fight. But Max was in perfect shape to take Louis best punches. And with his right hand to counter Louis' flaw he was the only fighter in the world that time who have had the means to realize that fight-plan.
