The Dark Destroyer on boxing today

Nigel still a fan of the sport.

On Floyd Mayweather:
"Mayweather's caught the syndrome of throwing one at a time, it seems to catch all the great fighters. I admit I caught it, Chris Eubank caught it, Naseem Hamed caught it, Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, Mike Tyson ofcourse caught it.

"You need to get him in there with a (Ricky) Hatton to force him to throw more than one at a time.

"When I used to watch Mayweather in years gone by, it was great seeing him open up and he had that killer instinct. It's there but just needs awakening. He needs to fight someone like Hatton maybe."

On Ricky Hatton:
"Ricky is the best fighter to ever come out of this country and will prove it when he stops (Jose Luis) Castillo and gives Mayweather the fight of his life if that fight can get put together.

"I'm certainly looking forward to his fight (with Castillo) more than the Mayweather-De La Hoya fight. You just know it's going to be two kids bashing eachother from pillar to post and in that kind of humdinger fight Ricky is unmatchable.

"It reminds of Roy Jones-James Toney and me and Gerald McClellan. If you wanted to watch a chess match you watched those two (Jones and Toney), but if you wanted to see some fireworks...

"Ricky's got so much in his armoury, his body punching power is off the scale and he can reload alnight long."

On Joe Calzaghe:
"It's the same old story with Joe. He fights once or twice a year and complains.

"The reason he never got recognition or any big fights for so many years was because he just wouldn't keep fighting, he wouldn't sustain any public interest and he wouldn't cross the pond.

"I just think he's slipped back into that comfort zone and I yawn at it. But there's so much more to come out of him, I reckon he's got a good five years left in him."

On Amir Khan:
"I'm very proud of Amir but he really needs to keep his feet on the ground. I know better than anybody that you can't get carried away, you can't let it all get to your head.

"When you step up in class it's a different story altogether. That's all I'm saying."

On Audley Harrison:
"You spoilt him rotten. It's your own fault.

"When I turned pro, I was living in a hostel and catching buses everywhere - when I could afford the bus fares that is.

"Within a year, I had a house fully-paid and was driving around London in a Porsche. You know what that was? That was hunger and straining at the leash.

"At 25 years old, I came crashing back down to earth at Finsbury Park and relocated to Miami ofcourse to rebuild my career from scratch.

"Audley is 35 years old and in that same position right now.

"What I'm saying is, you shouldn't of made him a millionare before he even had one fight. That's like winning the lottery!

"It's taken him seven years to get some hunger, but it's too late and I don't feel sorry for him one bit.

"He should of went with allegedly from the start, Frank would of got him a British title shot within seven fights. In seven years he hasn't even fought for the British title yet.

"I was beyond Audley's level within 15 months. Frank got me a title within about 15 weeks of taking over.

"He (Audley) was sparked out cold in his last fight and you have to ask whether he can recover from that.

"The guy really is a laughing stock as of now, sorry."

On Lennox Lewis offering to train Audley:
"He should go for it. He can learn a lot of off Lennox, who is the best heavyweight of the last 15 years by a landslide."

On allegedly:

"Frank's got everyone their great fights. He got me Gerald McClellan, he got big Frank Oliver McCall, he got Hamed the Madison Square Garden, he got Ricky the Tszyu, Joe Calzaghe the Lacy one.

"His record speaks for itself. Also guys like Terry Marsh and Colin McMillan, he's always delivered and he's got good timing.

"With Joe Calzaghe for example, I don't know who's fault it is, but the factor is that he just hasn't fought regularly enough. Whether that's Frank's fault for Joe's fault or TV companies fault or whoever, I don't know. But I do know that Frank delivers the goods."

On the heavyweight scene:
"It needs a puncher of some kind to inject some real life back into boxing, not just heavyweight boxing. Someone who goes for the kill and catches the imagination.

"Your Liston's, Foreman's, Tyson's were the heartbeat of heavyweight boxing. Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano..

"If Tommy Morrison was 10 years younger it may have been something.

"The kid who fought James Toney (Sam Peter), I don't think he's the answer. Who knows?

"Boxing needs knockouts to survive, though."

On Edison Miranda:
"I don't think I've seen this boy yet but if you can stop Howard Eastman then you can't be bad at all.

"Eastman was a really good prospect at one time."

On Carl Froch:
"I don't think I've seen him but I hear things about him.

"Maybe these (Miranda and Froch) are the kind of guys who can keep Calzaghe busy and keep him on his toes?"

On Manny Pacquiao:
"Awesome fighter who deserves to wear my No Fear legend.

"I love all the Mexicans."

On Iran Barkley challenging Evander Holyfield:
"I pray for guys like those."

On Tyson cocaine scandal:
"He needs God. I fear for him. I really love that guy and just hope and pray he finds peaces of mind.

"I'd like to see him to be honest. I'm one guy who can relate."

On Holyfield steroid scandal:
"Not the least bit suprised, mate.

"I got tested all the time and knew so many fighters who were doing the charlie (cocaine), juicing or whatever but never got caught.

"Infact, when I did my weight wrong for a certain big fight there was somebody - who will remain nameless - who had an artificial stimulant ready for me and was going to switch the urine test.

"I didn't go through with it."

On favourite fighters today:
"All the Mexicans, Corrales, Ricky, Alex Arthur, I would say Calzaghe if he was more regular, Mayweather if he opened up."

Nice to see Nige following boxing and knowing what hes talking about unlike many ex-pros.

I though his drug comments were VERY INTERESTING........In effect hes saying its easy to get away with steroids/drugs in boxing, even if you don't cycle them out your system or use masking agents to hide them someone will switch the urine samples for you.

Great comments from Nige.......the guy is an absolute legend.
Agree with all his comments apart from the one about Hatton being Britain's best ever, he will never get close to being a Jimmy Wilde

Compelling figure is Benn. I think Nigel should be considered for the Hall of Fame. He beat Eubank that 2nd time (really), beat McClellan who was awesome if unfinished, Barkley, DeWitt, Malinga, made 8 title defenses, and his first 2 losses were perhaps 2 of the best ever British fights.

For some reason some ppl had Nunn ahead of him at 168, but Nunn was lucky even to hold a title after those Cardona fights!

He wouldn't have been able to cope with Jones' style or speed, but hs win over McClellan is easily the equal to Jones beating a leaden Toney.

Shame about Benn making a fool of himself on I'm A Celeb, Get Me Out of here. He really let himself down there. And his book was really naff, for Sun & Daily Sport readers. But he has real presence still and says interesting things.

I think we perhaps wrongly assume that Calzaghe could've spanked him. Benn became quite compact after his American apprenticeship, adding realy good head movement.

All truthful an interesting. The Pacman Mexican quote was a cracker.

I prefer his quote while sitting in a BBC studio for one of Harrison early fights, I believe he was stoked on something but he came out with...

"I always thought boxing was better on ITV"

I dont know if he did it for a bet or what, but it was cracking telly as that knob from tennis and strongman fawned around for an answer.

Really great comments from Benn.

His comments about Khan and Audley, spot on...

Interesting stuff, good to know he still follows the sport too.

Not quite I agree with him over Tommy Morrison but then again who am I to disagree with Nigel Benn!

Also interesting that he is so complimentary about Warren...

Shame he hasn't seen Miranda. Miranda quite similar in style to Benn.

Surprised he's not seen froch fight, also loved the following...

On Manny Pacquiao:
"Awesome fighter who deserves to wear my No Fear legend.

"I love all the Mexicans."

It would be great to see him more involved in boxing specifically the training side. I'd love to hear his comments in the corner!

Well, he would be. He made an awful lot of money when working with Warren

Respect Nigel's opinion a hell of a lot, but to say that Hatton the best ever fighter to come out of this country is worrying.

Watch John Conteh, Naseem Hamed, Lloyd Honeyghan, Herol Graham, Ken Buchanan, Dave Charnley and many others.

Then watch Hatton.

Cant say I agree with Nigel on that one.

But one thing he does state "boxing needs knockouts"

Is spot on :TU:

Well he is there, or thereabouts. Even if you want to go the nostalgia route, and go for Jack Berg, or Jimmy Wilde, the fact that those guys are used as a yardstick for Hatton, is a compliment in itself.

To be fair to Benn I don't think his consideration as the best ever Brit extends further back than his own time in the game. Even then it is difficult to place Hatton above Lewis. But there again Hatton's career isn't over yet.

If, as Benn clearly believes, Hatton can KO JLC and run Mayweather close he'd be up there with the best. Just a case of perspective I guess.

He needs to beat Mayweather to be up there. Running him close would move him up the chain, no question, but that would just show he fell short in his attempt at greatness. However, if he could just blast out Junior Witter in a minute flat, I'd make room for him up there.

I don't think he needs to beat Mayweather to be one of the best. To be considered the best then he probably would. But the only British fighter with a win that would be comparable (or better) than Hatton beating Mayweather would be Randy Turpin.

Go Nigel!!!!! Top guy. :TU:

Talks like he fought, no messing around. The only statement I don't agree with is about Hatton being the best Uk fighter. Berg, T & L Lewis, Dricoll, Wilde, Welsh and a few others rank higher in my book, at this point in time, time may well change that.

Nigel said:

That was for the first Eubank fight.

i think its fair to say hatton had the potential to be the best fighter ever to have come from britain. but with his yo-yo between fight weight issues he has let himself and his fans down and shortened his career by about 6 fights...

IF Hatton gets rid of Castillo in impressive fashion then runs Mayweather close, then I think he is the greatest Brit (he's already the best in terms of skills) for sure.. Ever..

We'll see..

Hatton isn't even the greatest active Brit at the moment Calazage is by far.

And greatest ever Brit in term of skills Mr Nicholas?

As did many others.....people wonder why Warren is the top dog, but when you speak to fighters, it becomes clear that Warren generally speaking, offers them the best deals.

Whilst I don't think by any stretch that Frank is above criticism, I do think he gets tarred with the 'all promoters are ripping their fighters off' brush.

I remember when Parkinson interviewed Naz, who had split from Warren, and he made some comments about how Warren had exploited him, and Warren immediately filed a lawsuit. Who can blame him, Hamed made around £17 million wasn't it, more than any featherweight has made before or since. I'll bet Barrera, Morales and Pacquaio haven't made 34 million dollars.

Warren gets (rightly, imo) criticised for his matchmaking, but I doubt anyone could call his ability to get his fighters great deals/paydays into question. Hatton made a fortune with Warren fighting hasbeens and nobodies and Calzaghe continues to do so.

It will be very hard for anyone to challenge the likes of Jimmy Wilde and Ted Kid Lewis. Wilde I have high on a global G.O.A.T list.

Similarly in post 1950's Britain it was maybe achievable but hard when you consider Lennox Lewis was a geniune world Heavyweight champion for the best part of 10 years.

#2 ranking post 1950's was up for grabs and can still be obtained by Ricky.
