Australia's Best...

I thought it would be interesting to see who you think is the best Australian boxer in each weight division...

not who is ranked the highest, or has the brightest future but who you think is the best at the moment. Explainations of your choices are welcome... Have fun!

At a glance my list would look soemthing like this:

Heavyweight – Kali Meehan: Do we still count him as Australian? Either way he is the best of a very poor bunch

Cruiserweight – Jamie Withers: Not a very popular division in Australia, Jamie is the best I could think of; he is only 8-0 and he hasn’t fought anyone of note but he seems a half decent prospect…

Light Heavy – Danny Green/Paul Briggs: This was a tough one for me, I couldn’t split these two. They have both had some major setbacks in their careers but they show a good Aussie attitude and keep pushing forward…

Super Middleweight – Do I need to write it?

Middleweight – Sam Soliman: Even though he lost his last fight I still think he leads the Aussie charge in the middleweight division. Daniel Dawson should get an honourable mention though…

Junior Middleweight - Daniel Geale: He and Robert Medley are standouts here but I give Geale the edge. Still a prospect but seems to have the skills to go a long way…

Welterweight – I am really struggling to think of an Aussie welter… Maybe Chad Bennett but he looked awful in his last fight and I think he said he was going to retire… I’m at a loss for this one… someone help me out…

Junior Welterweight – Lovemore Ndou: One of the easiest divisions to pick. He is a great fighter with a ton of heart. He may have lost a few in the past but he is turning that around and he is number one in my book!

Lightweight - Michael Katsidis: Another easy one to pick. An awesome young fighter that is constantly moving on to bigger and better things.

Super Featherweight – Gary St Clair: This is another tough one. You have Billy Dib, Tommy Browne and Skinny Hussein. Dib is still undefeated but he hasn’t fought the likes of Chris John or Oscar Larios as Browne and Hussein have respectively. The only way I can pick it is to picture them in a round robin and at this stage despite being somewhat disappointing on the world stage I still think Skinny Hussein would come out on top… and just when I think I have it figured out I remember Gary St Clair who would dominate all of them. Guess it wasn’t as hard as I thought… lol.

Featherweight – Again I’ll need some help because I’ll be stuffed if I can think of an Aussie Featherweight… I think one of the Elomar brother’s fights there, Ahmed if I remember correctly but if he is the best we’ve got it’s pretty sad.

I’m not too good on the lower weight classes so I think I might have to skip a few divisions here and go to Australia’s Pound for Pound Number 1… Vic Darchinyan at Flyweight… need I say more…

hey good post....i'll give it a go.

HEAVYWEIGHT: Kali Meehan, has a decent looking record, but has lost to everygood fighter he has faced....heard he gave former champ lamon brewster a run for his money though. like you said....best of a bad bunch

CRUISERWEIGHT: Jamie Withers: only 8-0, should get a move on

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT: paul briggs edges danny Green just because he has spent more time there.

SUPER MIDDLE: mundine, easy

MIDDLEWEIGHT: presuming sam stays at 168, ill give the no1 spot to Dawson, though Vella and Singh are in with a shout also.

LIGHTMIDDLE: even between Geale and Medley...our two best prospects.

WELTER: horribel division for aussies...dunno about this one

LIGHTWELTER: Lovemore N'dou....

LIGHTWEIGHT: Katsidis, big future for this kid

SUPERFEATHER: good weight for aussie fighters....st clair, browne (got thrown to lions way to early, but is still young and should have a bright future, billy dib, hussien.

FEATHER: Ahmed elomar, i dont like the elomar brothers, they come across to me as "fully sick" wankers. did anyone see that fight a while ago between Mohammod elomar and matt powell? tossers...

yeah the lower weights get confusing....Vic at fly is prob. the only one worth mentioning

Good analysis as per all the divisions. :TU:

Just letting you know that Billy Dib is actually a Featherweight even though his last couple of fights have been at Super Featherweight.

Good list, Id probably put Eddie Delic in at Welterweight he is tough as nails and always comes to fight.

Good stuff, in my opinion many of those mentioned should fight the no.2 or 3 in the division, Geale Vs Dawson would be a good cross roads fight, winner moves up loser regroups.

Yeah the same could be said of Tommy Browne but I was just sticking where they've fought recently...

Yeah Bika is Aussie but he is a middleweight whose last few fights have been at supermiddle so due to the strong competition in those divisions I couldn't fit him in the list. Great that he got a mention though and he would probably give Dawson a run for his money...

If Dawson stops fighting bums...

There are some good matchups at 154 and 160, Bika- Dawson at 160 and Geale-Medley at 154.

Super Lightweight (aka. Light Welterweight) - Kostya Tszyu

Thought I'd bump this (from a couple of years ago) and give it a bit of a refresh...

Heavy - Kali: is still kicking and he would still whoop all others in Aus.

Crusier - Danny "I KO'd a legend to become one" Green: Decent domestic division for Aus with the likes of Vea, Withers, Amman and then blokes on the way up like Brad Pitt, Andrew Green and toppo's boy Forsyth. With that said Danny just KO'd a legend and retained the IBO baby. He is on another level (although he might move back to Light Heavy).

Light Heavy - Tim Bell: Not the strongest division in Aus at the moment but the win over Porky gives Bell the nod.

Super Middle - Sakio Bika: A division that has had a bit of publicity of late with the Contender (here and the US) but Bika is the cream of the crop.

Middle - Sam Soliman: IBO International Boxing Organisation Asia Pacific middleweight title, IBF Australasian middleweight title and World Boxing Foundation middleweight title holder. Yeah baby

Junior Middle - Dan Dawson: This is a tough one. Probably a toss up between Dawson and Medley with King Davidson showing potential to whoop them both in the not too distant future. You also have the likes of Waters and Leveni plying their trade at this weight.

Welter - Omotoso. If he is a Aussie I reckon you have to give him the nod.

Junior Welter is a tough one, I am loathe to say Steve Wills...

Light - Katsidis: Fighting on the World stage and he'd still whoop Ganoy and Zappa.

Super Feather - Will Tomlinson: Recently emerged as a true prospect having just KO'd an American with a decent (if padded) record. Clearly our best at the weight already at this point.

Feather - Action Jackson Asiku: Great wins of late and seems to step it up when it matters. Dib would disagree but he'd also get whooped. Look out for Joel Brunker to make some noise here as well.

I'm not sure we have too many fighter's lighter than that, Iannazzo might want a mention and of course Vic is dominant in terms of the lower weights in Aus.

Prediction: Lowie comes on and claims Geale is the only fighter that matters.

Shannon Briggs is an American Heavyweight. Are you confusing Paul Briggs and Shannon Taylor? Green won a recognised World Title at light heavyweight (WBA).
