Jamie Moore v Sechew Powell?...

Jamie steps up to world class

12/ 3/2007

JAMIE Moore will move up to world class when he faces American ace Sechew Powell in Altrincham next month.

The 28-year-old British light-middleweight champion from Salford will take on the New Yorker - whose only defeat was to world- title class Kassim Ouma - at Altrincham Leisure Centre on April 15.

Moore's manager Steve Wood has revealed that the fight with Powell, ranked No 7 in the world by the IBF, is now close to being sealed.

"We have taken the fight, and Powell's people have agreed in principle, so we are hoping it will be confirmed in the next 24 hours," he said.

"We tried to get Jamie a European title shot, but the champion, Michele Piccorillo, wasn't interested in taking him on, either here or in Italy, but it is time to move him on."

Moore eased to an eight-round points win over Romanian journeyman Mugurel Sebe in Dagenham on Friday, a fight designed to test his shoulder after surgery as well as to get him back in the groove ahead of next month's test.

If this is on, it's an excellent fight for Moore. I do worry about this line though: "Powell's people have agreed in principle, so we are hoping it will be confirmed in the next 24 hours". Call me cynical, but I've seen too many fights announced, and then not happen, to get too excited yet. It does seem short notice for Powell to be travelling abroad....

Why does every person that does well domestically feel they're going to be world class. I'd hate to see Moore get the shit beaten out of him at a level too high for him. Powell's very ordinary in terms of being world class. Why can't Moore fight at British and Euro level?

Moore's had enough fights at domestic level, surely? I'd have preferred a European shot, but it it's true that a fight with Piccorillo isn't possible right now, why not see what Moore has got against a fringe top 15 fighter?

Do I think Moore has what it takes to beat a Spinks or an Ouma at that level? Not right now, no. But if he can't fight the next step up from his domestic title, let him have a go at a decent American.

I don't think Moore himself is claiming to be world class. I think the M.E.N. is guilty of some hyperbole. From what Jamie said after his last fight, he wants to see if he's good enough. If there's one British fighter I don't begrudge the chance to find out what he's got at a higher level, it's Moore.

moore and powell are not that dissimilar in terms of achievement are they?

Is Moore vs Powell that different from Moore Macklin? in terms of matchmaking. just becasue its an 'international' fight, Powell is not a 'world' level fighter

Its a little bit ironic, Ossie Duran beat Jamie Moore.... Sechew Powell beat Ishe Smith..... Duran has recently called out Smith (he's had a few fights in the states) and its looks like maybe Moore and Powell will fight.

Good fight for Moore, a win over Powell should raise his profile stateside. I thought Ishe Smith would have beaten Powell had he been just slightly more active, close fight. I'd give Moore a good shot at winning.

Think Moore definetely has the workrate to trouble Powell who can look awful at times. Am suprised he managed to beat Smith and Ouma outclassed him (not that I think Moore is on that level).

Jamie has proved himself the best in Britain, what's wrong with him stepping up to fringe world class Maussa? At least he isn't jumping straight into a WBO title shot.

Didn't you think Michael Hunter v Steve Molitor was a bleeding waste of time?

Powell's no Molitor admittedly, but what has Moore shown to be world class?

There are lower levels for non world class fighters, like domestic & Euro. Hope he beats Powell - Powell is desultory - but if he guns for Simms, Spinks, and Dzinziruk it's just going to be written off as a mis-mandatory or hand picked title defense.

Tell you what, Moore-Jose Rivera could be exciting.

Well I'd consider Piccirillo(who holds a win over Cory Spinks, albeit controversially) fringe world class and Moore delt with Michael Jones in quicker fashion than Piccirillo so its only fair we see Moore at world level - if he doesnt suceed he can always drop down to domestic and euro level. Btw I think Verno Phillips would be another good fight for Moore and I even think Moore would win impressively....Phillips has looked on the slide for a while now.

Moore-Rivera would be a war.

But he needs to get Piccirillo when the Italian is free. He could learn a lot against the guy and if he could win - emphatially - world class wouldn't seem too far away.

Well done to Maloney for getting Moore this fight (fingers crossed).

It's now or never for Moore if he wants to shoot for the stars and get a world title shot. Jamie has performed wonders as British champion and a win over Powell should book a world title shot.

It's good management by Maloney and will hopefully let Moore by pass the EBU title, which will be tough to win and Moore may also need to defend it more than once to book a world title crack.

A newspaper in Argentina is reporting that Moore's opponent will be Roberto Reuque

Posted: 23 Mar 2007, 03:09
by tyson
It also on boxrec fighters scedule . the guy ia a welterweight whose opponents combined record reads 327 wins 356 losses and 55 draws.
A bit of form guide He lost to Sebastian Andres Lujan last year in 9rds at welterweight Lujan drew with Hungarian Mihaly Kotai in Sept 05 in Manchester for Kotai IBO Light middleweight title. Lujan also lost last in May last year to WBO light Middleweight champion Sergiy Dzinziruk on pts over 12. It would be good to see if jamie can beat Roberto Hernan Reuque quicker then Lujan to measure how he might do against the likes of Dzinziruk. Doesnt seem to wet the appetite like Sechew Powell would of though !

Hmm call me sceptical but i'm feeling sceptical about this! Isn't it a bit short notice, unless the parties have been beavering away at a deal for a while without us hearing about it. I'm being a bit miserable here but i think the Roberto Reuque claim sounds a lot more viable to me.

The Powell fight is definitely off. He said he didn't want to come over here and be be on the wrong end of a dubious decision. Those are the words of Steve Wood (Jamie's manager). At least that's what he posted on another forum:

Well Hunter wanted to have a go so no It wasn't a waste of time and Molitor had no one else to fight.

Not seen Moore so I don't know what he's done to be world class.

Theres nothing wrong with them having a go If there confident they can win.

This fight never made sense, Powell has just finished beating ishe smith, why would he possibly need or want to go to the altricham leisure centre (LMAO!) to fight some british no-name...

That is a bit harsh and/or ignorant. Jamie has been featured on Shobox, is featured on US sites, was considered for 'The Contender' (and turned them down) and to be fair a good offer was made to Powell.

I think this is the toughest part of any fighters career. Trying to step up beyond your domestic level is always hard because the modern contender does not have to fight 50/50 contention matches and few will be willing to risk losing their ranking to Moore.

The nature of the beast is that once you crack the world top-ten you can stand still and see your ranking boosted or get a title shot. It is similar to soap actors who get fired from one show then pop-up on the bill. You lost your WBA title? WBC is next up, then IBF and then WBO.

Jamie took on Macklin in a genuine 50/50 fight and wants to move up a level but it is going to be very hard to get him decent fights.
Its not about being harsh towards Moore. It just did not make sense for a half-decent east coast american fighter with decent promotional backing, and coming off a quality if not impressive win, to head to some leisure centre in the arse-end of England to fight a guy who is trying to dip his toe outside of domestic waters. I actually think Moore would acquit himself respectably, powell is nothing special. Plus if he fought on shobox, I'm guessing its when they were still tied to whatever the promoter fed them, before they revamped the format. I remember them showcasing some unremarkable UK domestic fights on the old shobox format, they were criticised for doing so and changed their policy accordingly. I would rather Moore go the European route.

Powells managment team accepted the fight. Moore is ranked higher than Powell by the WBC and im sure Powell would have been paid well to come over and fight Moore, be it in "a leisure centre" or in a phone box (the later appealing more to moorsey i reckon). hy-ho the fights off, hopefuly Mr Wood can get a half decent opponent in and Jamie will then either drop his Brit title and move on to the Euro or another world rated fighter, or, fight Bradley price before september.

looks like moore is fighting juan sebastian lujan...never seen him fight but he must be pretty decent as he went 12 with sergei dzinduruk(WBO champ) who i was impressed with when I saw him deservedly beating santos.

That a good call, Lujan is nothing great and is really a natural welter but he's durable and has a name of sorts. Other good names he could beat atbthis points would be canclaux, tsurkan, daniel edouard, maybe even rodney jones...
