Froch: I can reign for years



Carl Froch has declared that his future reign as king of the world super-middleweight division will go on well into his thirties.

British and Commonwealth champion Froch, 29, fights Russian Sergey Tatevosyan over 12 in his home city at the Nottingham Arena on Friday aiming to extend his brilliant unbeaten record to 21 wins.

Froch is top of the bill on the Hennessy Sports and GoldenPalace.com 'Cobra's Hood' event, which also features John O'Donnell's showdown with Stuart Elwell for the vacant English welterweight title.

KO specialist Froch, who claimed his 16th victim inside the distance when he halted Liverpool challenger Tony Dodson in three rounds last November, is ranked third in the world by the WBC and WBO and fifth by the IBF. He hopes to secure a final eliminator for one of those titles by the end of the year.

When he does get to the top, he intends to remain there.

'I'm a clean liver. I don't drink or smoke, so I think I can carry on for another six or seven years," said Nottingham Forest season ticket-holder Froch.

"I plan to be fighting for a major title soon. This is a step up in class for me. Tatevosyan has knocked out the former European champion Rudy Markussen and beaten the current European champion David Gogiya. I want to do a good job on him.

"I don't go up in weight between fights. It's more traumatic for the body to go back down in weight if your weight fluctuates so much. You can only do it a few times and it puts a limit on how long you can fight for.

'But I wouldn’t say anything bad about anyone who does it because after training for ten weeks you are entitled to have a drink and some nice food. But that's not for me.'

Tatevosyan can be expected to bring a significant challenge. He has mixed in high company, is well ranked and is also a southpaw, like other top super-middleweights who Froch may be fighting in the next year.

"I beat a good southpaw in Brian Magee last year so I don't really struggle against them. But it will be good practice for knocking out Joe Calzaghe,' Froch added.

No offense to Hennessy Sports but thats a dumb premise for a press release, talking about how long his"reign" will be when he is yet to win a title or fight one of the top names just makes Froch look silly in my eyes.

Have to agree with the above its big talk for somebody who hasnt fought for a world title and isnt even close to making a challenge, also the im gonna knock calsaghe shit is really boring now.

Froch is above average and has had some decent wins so far but lets just see what happens when he fights at world class level - I like to see fighters have a bit of confidence in themselves but Froch is nothing but a big headed bath steward who I believe will come unstuck with his style of fighting - His lack of defense will I am sure see him sparked out sooner or later at the higher level - This guy he is fighting in a couple of days is no mug and can bang so he could upset the applecart and spoil the Froch dream, who knows - I laugh every time I hear the twat talk about KOing Joe Calzaghe - In a way I wish Joe would take him on and show him what its like to face his relentless attacks - Froch dives out of the way when a fighter unloads and usually gets away with it but he wouldnt if his opponent was Calzaghe - Joe would follow him to every corner of the ring and would keep pounding him - Froch has a lethal punch but so has Lacy who couldnt land it on Joe - I wouldnt fancy Froch against Lacy never mind Calzaghe - You cant talk about winning the title and being on top of the division for years as Froch is doing, he has to take every fight as a major challenge and see where it takes him - This comming fight is no forgone conclusion and Froch will have to be at his very best to beat him - I cant see it being a walkover for Froch so it could be very interesting, we shall see.

Froch is full of shit but Calzaghe can easily shut him up by beating him in a keep busy fight ready for this mega showdown we keep being told he is going to be in soon. Sorry i forgot Froch isn't worthy enough to fight Calzaghe, maybe Kabary Salem II instead then.

We shouldn't be to hard on Froch in this instance, he didn't write the press release and might not even of said what he's quoted as saying. The fault is with Hennessy Sports' press office for putting this release out IMO.

And what exactly has he delivered?....it isn`t something that hasn`t been achieved alot quicker by alot younger guys is it

The best names on his record don`t prove much...in fact they prove very little.

He has lost what little momentum he had.

The amount of titles out there now makes it almost impossible for a better than average boxer(what he is) not to get his hands on one....but its who he fights and how he does that will be remembered...and what will earn him his money.

Ask Clinton Woods, he`s got a title but little else.

I agree, I have been badly misquoted in the Sun twice, but thats the Sun, however this has not come from a sensation grabbing tabloid, has it - We all know what Froch is like and the things he says and its very unlikely HS press office would make it up - Lets see what he can actually do rather than listen to the stuff he claims will happen.

Last time his contract was up with Hennessy, he approached allegedly to see if he could get a better deal. The deal was there, but it would have meant fighting Calzaghe. And guess what, mr call Joe out at ever opportunity Froch said no deal. Now excuse me for stating the glaringly obvious but ...... had Froch really wanted Calzaghe, and believed that he could have won, the fight would have been done.

Theres lots of talk on the aussie forums about Froch- Mundine, general talk though is Froch would'nt want it. Fight like that would really put him on the map or take him off it.

I heard he was also offered the IBF eliminator vs Bute but turned it down, if so he does not seem to keen to take these big fights that would actually put him on the map

I rate Froch a lot and really respect what he has achieved both amatuer and pro, but half of these press releases make me cringe and outside of the Nottingham faithful, this sort of stuff will turn off as many people as it turns on.

I wish he wouldn't set his stall out so high. We've seen some nasty falls from grace before...Hamed, Audley Harrison etc

Montreal news said that the fight was not offered to Froch because he's schedualed tomorrow night and IBF rules say that any fighter schedualed cant be up for a eliminator(stupid Rule) The IBF did not even let Froch know that a elimination with him and Bute would have been approved, never gave him the choice.

Ah I see thanks, I though it was a very strange move by Froch. I agree it does seem a stupid rule.

The difference between hameds fall and froch is that carl is yet to beat anybody of note whereas at least hamed held multiple world titles and was only beat by one of arguably the greatest little men ever.

Looking at youtube clips of Bute and he's more of a slower version of Calzaghe and gets hit easier, so Froch might have a chance against Bute since he doesn't have the Calzaghe speed, footwork or workrate and punch volume.

Does have a simular offence and defence though.

From what I have seen of both I wouldn't fancy Froch's chances against Bute.

Lets see how he looks tomorrow night but talks of long title reigns are a tad premature when he's yet to beat a top 10 supermiddle.

Regardless of what Bute has or hasn't done, Froch would be well advised to target him next. At 29 years of age, Froch really needs to be stating his case on the world scene now. Beating Bute would give him a big global profile as the man next in line. I can't fault him for the way he's picked up the British and Commonwealth titles, but he's nearing 30 now, and he hasn't fought for a European belt, let alone a world belt. 20 fights in 5 years is pretty slow progress for someone who turned pro in his mid twenties, in my opinion.

I agree big time. I don't think there's much between Bute and Froch right now. Bute has impressed those who've seen him in North America. Froch has shown his ability in Europe.

I say Froch-Bute is the match that is worth making. The winner of that is the fighter who deserves to take on Calzaghe/Kessler.

If Bute wins against Bike he get's a title shot against the IBF champion.

Froch isnt in the mix.

He's remained undefeated against domestic level opposition. That's all he's done.
He's made claims about far far more than that.
Sure he hasn't exactly given us a timetable he'd follow. So can't really hold him to it yet.

But so far he's proven nothing more than a severe case of mouth-diarhea.

Tatevosyan mainly gained his current ratings by beating Markussen, who was rated too high in the first place.
But Tatevosyan only ever got that victory because Markussen has the spine of a worm.
No doubt the russian is tough. It would be a good victory - not a great one.

To me Bute just seems so far ahead in the overall skills depardment that it would take far more to convince me Froch should be rated above.
