Just wanted to hear anyone's opinion who has seen Robbie fight and any impressions they may have. I am interested because he is the main trainer at the boxing gym I used to go to. Below is an interesting article written just before he turned pro.
http://www.fighter-online.com/WE04JUl05 ... ryant.html

I haven't seen Robbie's second fight (TKO3 win) but I saw his first (UD4 win). Below is my current assessment of Robbies strengths and weaknesses.

STRENGTHS
Good technique
Good speed
Excellent fitness
Determination/Willpower
Excellent chin (never been knocked down in sparring or any of his professional or amateur fights)
Decent power
Has sparred with and held his own against Shannon Taylor, Daniel Dawson, Naoufel Ben Rabah, and other professionals (he has also sparred with me, but I wouldn't really call that an accomplishment!)
Walking weight is usually not much over 154lb, so he shouldn't have trouble making weight

WEAKNESSES
28 years old and just starting his pro career = leaving it a bit late
Inexperienced at fighting more than 4 rounds
While never KO'd, Robbie has been outpointed a couple of times in the amateurs, including once to Daniel Geale
Not fighting often enough, first two fights over 6 months apart
Lives in Perth where you are lucky if there are two fight nights in a year

I am also a little puzzled about where BoxRec get their stats from. Previously Robbie's height was posted at 5'11, and now it is 5'8. Knowing Robbie personally I can assure you that he is about 5'10. Robbie was also originally posted as a SMW, which he has never been.

Ok, I realise Robbie is far from a big name, I probably should have given the thread a different name so that people actually have a clue what it's about!

I am no expert, but I personally believe that if Robbie can get the right fights, and enough fights, he is good enough to be Australian champion within 18 months, and fight for a world title within 3 years.

I know this is a long shot, but I think that based on his amateur experience, technique, work ethic and his excellent chin, Robbie has what it takes to be a future world champion.

I thinkk Robbie could be an Australian champion if he gets the right matchups. He will need to move to Sydney for a few years as his career will stall here in Perth with the lack of fights over here.

Agreed. He has mentioned before that he intends to live in Perth and fly over east for fights, but he will need a sponsor to be able to afford to do so. Plus, this early in his career, Robbie should probably be fighting almost every month, which would mean a lot of flying and a lot of money. Sounds like moving over east is the most sensible option.

OZ promoters aren’t scared of airfares. He should be OK providing he’s reliable and is on the pre booked/paid flight.
Airfares within OZ are cheap. I recently flew form Gold Coast to Adelaide & back for $200.
If I drove, I'd be up for 600+ in petrol plus a couple of nite's motel accommodation....It's a friggin' long way.

Looks like Robbie's in luck, he should be on the undercard of Green-Siaca on the 30th of May at Challenge Stadium. Not confirmed yet.

Daniel Geale will be on the same card, Geale beat Robbie on points as an amateur. Hopefully Robbie's opponent will be a bit better than Abhay Chand, because I'd like to see him build a name for himself quickly seeing as he's started his career late.

Wow, it looks as though Robbie is aiming to up his workrate, as he has also accepted a fight in Subiaco, WA on the 28th of April against a yet to be confirmed opponent.

For some reason his fight is posted as Middleweight. Still, good to see Robbie fighting once a month at this stage of his career. Still he's lucky there have been 3 fights in 3 months in Perth, and will surely have to go over east if he wants to continue this workrate.

Anyone here considering going?

According to BoxRec, Venka will be fighting on the same card, but against Adam Leavers (5-3-1). It looks like Robbie's opponent is yet to be confirmed.

Nope, it looks as though word of mouth is more accurate than the official channels, Robbie IS fighting Harry Venka. Should be interesting to see if Venka's height and reach prove to be an advantage. Venka has a lot more amateur fights than Robbie, I wonder how successful he was? Still, I expect Robbie to win. Should be an interesting fight, pity I can't see it.

Is anyone planning on going, and is there any chance the fight will be on PPV?

The card had changed a few times during the week. No point of changing it in BoxRec knowing it's probably only good for a day.
As at today, this is the current card.

Nope, it's not televised.

That would be an interesting fight. The scorecards for the first fight were 40-35, 40-35 and 38-37, all to Bryant. The 40-35s were a bit dodgy as Bryant definitely lost the final round IMO, and the first round was very close. However, Bryant definitely won the 2nd 10-8 with the knockdown, and clearly outboxed Tongia in the 3rd round.

I would favour Robbie to win another decision if they fought again, I spoke to him after the fight and he seemed to think that he was a bit off his best.

Robbie Bryant beat Harry Venka on points last night and goes to 3-0-0 (1ko). It doesn't say whether the decision was unanimous or not, perhaps this will be updated soon.

Robbie's next fight is against an unconfirmed opponent on the undercard of the Green-Siaca fight on the 30th of May. This will be his fourth fight, and his fourth fight in WA. Surely he will have to start travelling to fight sometime soon.

I guess it depends on where Robbie wants to go with his career, perhaps he is happy to stay in Perth and fight when the opportunity pops up. But if he wants more, yes, he will have to travel...

Interesting! Seeing as Robbie was the home fighter, perhaps he got lucky? The scorecards confuse me a little, was there a 10-8 round in there somewhere (38-37)? I'm also interested that the fight was at middleweight, when Robbie can easily make 154lb (he has almost always fought as an amateur at 69kg which is 152lb with a same day weigh in).

Did anyone here see the fight?

I was there, first 2 are correct, he won easy, dunno what the third judge was looking at!

i wouldnt have been surprised if the fight was a draw as in the first two rounds venka boxed much better, robbie may have gotten a 10-8 for the last when he beat venka up

Wow, a come from behind victory! I would have loved to have seen that!

I'm assuming the 39-37 gave Robbie one of the first two, then both the last two rounds. The 38-37 must have been first two rounds to Venka, the third to Robbie and a 10-8 to Robbie in the final round. The 37-39 must have been first three rounds to Venka, final round to Robbie.

Sounds like a really interesting fight. Throughout his amateur career, Robbie has been outpointed from time to time by quality opposition. He is a tough guy, and has an excellent chin, so perhaps he should start looking for 6 round fights. He hasn't fought over that distance before, but he has sparred a large number of rounds on many occasions, and I think with longer fights he is less likely to be outpointed.

Bryant's SD win over Venka has dropped his BoxRec ranking from 226 to 238 out of 995 fighters at that light middleweight.

His next fight is on the 30th of May on the undercard of the Green-Siaca fight. He will be fighting Andreas Seran, 5-2-1 (3 KOs), who recently fought to a draw against Adam Leavers. The fight will be at middleweight, so Robbie is fighting a division heavier than he has to again, seeing as his walking weight is less than 160lb. It will be a 6 round fight, which will be the longest Robbie has ever had, but I think this is a good thing, as it will make him less likely to lose a decision IMO. Seran has experience with 10 and 12 round fights, but I am going to tip for a late rounds KO or clear points decision to Robbie Bryant.

Andreas Seran is next for him 5-2 Indonesian Welterweight Title won 2 fight ago looks like a lil step up.

A six rounder can be nothing but good for Bryant. I'm not sure why he fighting higher than he has to, I can only assume that's where the fights are for him? Who arranges his fights?
