mikes punch was recorded at 1750psi, thats the hardest punch on record. foreman hit at 1600psi. im not sure what shavers or marciaon were or even if they had theres measured.

Ray Leonard always said that Mike's power came from his speed. HIs power may have been overrated but he was quicker than pretty much any other other HW.

if you consider the fact that he was a small HW, my answer would be no way was it over rated.

get on youtube and look at his highlights then tell me if his power is over rated.....not all his opponets went down before he hit them....there was a reason why they were just going down and thats bc he hit like a tank.

Nearly everytime a thread about punching power comes up, somebody posts this same nonsense about so and so's punch being measured at this or that. I have yet to see any actual proof that any such tests have ever been performed.

Regarding Tyson, I guess to answer the question "is his power overrated?" you need to say where you think people are rating him. He was obviously a very, very hard puncher, but if someone says he was the hardest puncher ever, I would say they were overrating him.

They have those tests. I don't know if Tyson took it though.

Watch some film of his early years of his career and that'll answer your question.

Tyson had alot of power, but extremely weak opposition. After his comeback from prison in the mid 90's guys were terrified to fight him.
Frank Bruno & Bruce Seldon were horrified. Frans Botha & Buster Mathis Jr. at least tried, despite their lack of talent.

While Tyson had undeniable KO power, he feasted on the lackluster bums
in the 80's & 90's

If he were in his prime today, would he still be a force in the division today? I think he'd be a contender, but I think the size & skill of some of today's heavies would cause big problems for him. He'd certainly eat alot of punches getting inside on these guys!!!!!

Mike didnt hit as hard (in one shot) as Foreman or Shavers. Like a poster before me already said it was his quickness that led to flush shots and accumulation. You rarely saw a Tyson KO victim laying on the ground for minutes at a time most were simply hit so many times flush that they could not keep their feet. Now I'm not saying Mike wasn't powerful because he was (top 10 in my opinion) it was his hand speed that led to his KOs.

Cliff Couser...someone told me he was Mike's cousin.

No secret to Tysons KO's. Combinations with power. Other than Botha I can't think of a world class fighter that he took out with one shot. Fast hard shots in combination. Thats it.

He's Tyson's brother.

It depends on what the word overrated means. He may not have had one punch kayo power like Shavers or Cooney or Foreman(although he really didn't.) They way I think his power was is he hit at a 9/10 level, but his combos were so fast he'd land 3 or 4 at that rate so it was worse. It was his speed and combos that made him special.

youngest to win part of the title. patterson was still younger by the time tyson unified.

His uppercut could behead anyone. He put all of his weight into the punch.

I don't put any cred to the psi measurements. If it was the exact same machine, at the same moment in time, with no malfunctions, then I may give it some credit.

Looke back @ his KO's; after many he was the 1st one over 2 see if his victim was alright.

I think Tysons great strength was his incredible hand speed and the ability to hit hard with combination punches.

As you say several opponents didn't think Tyson was the hardest puncher they fought, Holmes said Shavers, Holyfield said Bowe, Pinklon Thomas said Mike Weaver and Ribalta said Bonecrusher Smith.

I think its the fact that Tyson would hit someone with 4-5 punches in the same time someone would have landed one or two. If you watch some of his early ko's you can see the look of shock on some of his opponents, like 'what just hit me'.

As Tyson got older he lost some speed and of course didn't throw combinations, he relied on one big punch. This may explain why fighters like Williams and McBride managed to beat him, they could survive the odd big punch, things would have been different if Tyson hit them with a 5 punch combo.

i think people are talking about 2 different mike tyson's
the 1st is the cus d'amato camp, pre jail,pre don king, tyson and the 2nd post jail, post king, tyson.
the 1st tyson was the greatest fighters I have ever seen, his hand speed was matched by no other hw ever before or since. his head and body movement was a thing of beauty neading almost no jab to get in side his opponents, just using that great head/waist bobbing motion to get in range of his killer (powerful)hook/upppercut combos most opponents did not even see the punches coming and before they knew it fights over!.
now the 2nd tyson is about the saddest waist of talent I think I will ever see, because make no mistake about it he was still very talented. he stopped using the head/body movement wich was his foundation for his offense and defense, he became enamered with his power punches and decided he did not need to properly train like cus had trained him cause he figured I'll just intimidate them then hit them and they will fold. and as we say the rest is history.
