Why has he retired?

CANT GET A FIGHT AND NEEDS TO FEED HIS FAMILY

Now, please tell me if I am wrong but has he done a bit of a "Kevin McBride" and priced himself out of fights given his Michael Gomez win. I do find it a little difficult to believe that he has had little or no offers since that excellent win.

Perhaps "priced himself out" is unfair terminology to use, has he been offered anything.

I'm just wandering that as he took short notice, away fighter, contests in the past would he be tempted to do so again if an offer came or did he maybe slightly misjudge his popularity/appeal (like Kevin McBride did) following his big win.

Although Peter shouldn't be drinking in the last chance saloon given the win, isn't it a perfect fight for him and Dean Phillips to get it on low key - when Phillips returns from his suspension.

Also with Michael Gomez returning, surely that avenue is back.

I just don't like the reason for retirement, as admirable as it is.... just surely he's been approached by some promoter/fighter.

I think it's pencilled in for May 6th at the GH Carnell LC in Altrincham.

He's training at Bobby Rimmer's in Stalybridge.

I didn't realise Gomez was returning. He was close to shot when he retired i don't see what he has left. Hope he is not going to go round stalking Alex Arthur again screaming for a rematch, Arthur should take a court order out to keep him 50 yards away from ringside :P

I think McDonagh should be maybe a little more patient. It paid off for Thaxton who for several months after a relatively high profile return was out of the title picture at the weight - was not in the title picture. He was getting very frustrated - eventually the BBBoC couldn't argue against his performances and he got a shot.

I don't think the sole win over Gomez, who was moving up in weight, wasn't enough to award a BRITISH title fight immediately (given his previous record), maybe an English one - but then McDonagh is Irish Champion so cannot fight for that. Just as the Tyson win wasn't enough to justify McBride a shot at the World title.

I wish him all the best for the future, but think he might regret the decision in months to come. He's just one or two fights away from a shot but I do think expecting the shot immediately might have been asking a bit much.

Perhaps a match with Lawton would be a suitable eliminator esque match.

Bermondsey's Peter McDonagh has called it a day after five years as a pro. The Irish lightweight champion won his last four but struggled for big fights, grew exasperated and at 29 - well, enough is enough.
Not a big puncher, rangy McDonagh was never stopped and outlasted Michael Gomez for the Irish title in shocking fashion last year at a packed National Stadium in Dublin, riding out the early attacks of the Manchester predator before dropping him and forcing him to quit in five rounds.
A big, big win.
McDonagh, born in Ireland, turned pro in London in 2002 and featured in plenty of York Hall thrillers, winning some, losing some. He got his break when he ventured to Brighton in 2004 and forced local man Chill John to retire after two rounds (back injury). Victory earned him a crack at the Southern Area lightweight title against Jon Honney, and at the end of 10 cracking rounds, he lifted the belt by one point.
Southpaw Honney had given Graham Earl a bruising eight-rounder.
The title gave McDonagh status and brave as he was - fearless as he was - he accepted a succession of tough opponents: former Commonwealth lightweight champ David Burke, current English lightweight champion Scott Lawton, Dublin's unbeaten Robert Murray, Italy's unbeaten Brunet Zamora - all of whom edged him. And he lost his Southern Area title to unbeaten Rob Jeffries after 10 thrilling rounds in 2005 (98-94, although many had it closer). So McDonagh had plenty of appetite and stamina, good boxing skills and grit. His best win, of course, came against the feared Gomez, something many tried to take away from him with allegations of a 'fix'.
McDonagh, ever the good pro, simply failed to read the script.

you must know him well that is how the story goes every fight that was mentioned he was not the promoted fighter and lost 8 of his 11 loses by 1 single point but that is how it goes

not many fighter have had a hard 10 rounds defending a title then a week later having another battle over 10 rounds for a title the weight above you have got to give him respect

bs, Peter is limited to the extreme, his only decent win was against GOmez and that was an "interesting" fight to say the least.
