Terry O'Connor

Worst ref ever - Even worse than that Luis Michael and that is saying something.
This guy should not be let near a boxing ring - He makes so many mistakes, and there is no sign of any improvement in his reffing ability at all.
Seems no one on the boxing board of control actually gives a fornicate about the standard of their refs.

I wouldn't say he is the 'worst ref ever', I have seen worse. While I do think the Manfredo fight was stopped a bit prematurely, give or take another 20 seconds, Manfredo would have been out on his feet. Looked like Calzaghe hit him with 30-40 unanswered shots, and while Peter wasn't hurt, there is a rule in boxing:
If you don't 'answer' back to shots, you are going to lose, the referee will stop the fight. Manfredo, hurt or not, made NO attempt to fire back at Calzaghe. O'Conner did what was right, though in my opinion it robbed Calzaghe of a knock out victory.

No he didnt though Hank - 'effective' aggression is what counts in boxing - not shoe shin combos where only a couple of the shots land cleanly. Manfredo was bobbing under shots when the ref lost his bottle and jumped in..
No one is doubting that JC would have won or was in control. The paying customer and viewer deserve a better standard of reffing though.
As a brummie I have seen O'Connor loads and can confirm he is not a top class ref

Can't blame Calzaghe for shoeshining though can you, it was totally flustering the kid, so whle not economical was certainly effective. Look to RJJ vs T Thornton for a near identical stoppage.
I'd say the paying public deserves to see a better standard of fights. Fvck the ref issue, the fight was a bad idea from the start because Petey couldn't even throw punches.
I guarantee this is the end of this fantasy and J Taylor probably got alucky break when that Mora guy pulled out.

Their's no excuse here. That was inexcusable. I didn't see Manfredo get rocked once. It keeps happening with this guy.
I want to see a fornicating clean knockout! I watch boxing to see a fight, not some ridiculus amatuer shit which is what refs like O'Conner are turning it into. Ask the fighters themselves and they will say the same. Stoppages like that rob everyone and leave room for excuses.

Was a premature stoppage but Manfredo did start to stop throwing anything.
Aye he shouldn't of been In with Manfredo though In the first place.

Well considering all the boos against Manfredo and boos against the USA anthem and all the cheers when Manfredo lost anyways, I figure you lot got your monies worth, despite the premature stoppage.
But make no mistake, give or take 20 seconds later had it went on, Manfredo would have lost by kayo. So I don't see what's the big deal. Manfredo had no chance of winning anyways, and everybody knows it was just a money fight, some easy set up for Calzaghe. Was just a 'name', not a real fighter.
So, people shouldn't take all this so seriously. Manfredo was hit with 30 unanswered shots, what was the ref to do? Bobbing and weaving I didn't see, all I seen was Calzaghe hitting Manfredo as fast as a trip hammer, and Manfredo had no way to retaliate or to really protect himself.

From memory Jones hit 'the punching postman' with a few more clean shots then Joe got through tonight. I would have to check back on dvd because its been a while..
I was against the fight from the start; it was a poor match, but the reffing just compunded an already poor situation..
It left a bitter taste in the mouth - although that could be said of the entire promotion TBH.

Christ Henry you are easily pleased.. Not much decent boxing over in Ohio at the moment I take it?
We are boxing fans on here - not piss heads who boo national anthems and the 'bad' guys - we want to see a fight reach its proper conclusion. Tonight, I didnt.

A crap ref, needs to go back to school. His timing sucks, yank was in no real danger. Didn't he mess up the Froch stopage as well?
No wonder FW was fuming at such an uneccesary hometown looking decision, after the earlier blowouts
How many punches did his three stars take tonight, Joe, Amir and Enzo? Two or three total?
HBO must have been mightily impressed! HOW much did that cost again??
Not a whisper of complaint from the ITV commentary boys either.

Well, all I seen from the Welsh was a bunch of booing the 'bad guys' and cheering for the 'home team'. So dont give me that. And ALL people want to see a proper fight, a conclusive end. BUT you can't sit there and say you really were expecting the fight to ever be competitive, let alone a real buy in any way shape or form, yet the Welsh pack in 35,000 to see the circus act.
The sport is in enough trouble without having these sideshow acts.
Was I pleased? No. I would have expected Manfredo to possibly been a little better, but when I seen him fight the way he was, I knew he was fooling himself. You can't box with Calzaghe, whose been possibly the best SMW champion and/or SMW fighter ever.
But let's face it...I would have rather had a premature stoppage, than to have let it gone on and Manfredo get really hurt by a 'real' boxer with the greatness of Calzaghe.
I hope in some way this does make Calzaghe a more lucrative attraction if he does come to the States and persues Hopkins, Kessler or Taylor, but to me, this was just as big a mismatch as was 'Irish' Bob Baker when he fought Maurice Hope, if not an even bigger mismatch.

You havent sat through ten years of Calzaghe under achieving and not fulfilling his potential Henry, so I can somewhat understand your blase attitude; but for us UK based fight fans these type of match ups have been the norm.
The whole show was massively underwhelming and TBH its the sort of thing that is turning my slowly off boxing.
Only watching the old greats (guys like the man your username pays homage to) and the odd dazzling performance from modern fighters really hold my interest these days..

i have to say looking at it from one angle it looked like Calzaghe was kicking the shit out of him, then from another most of the punches were missing. looking at it from the refs point of view those punches might have looked as if they were hitting the target. It was stopped premiturely but Calzaghe was always going to win the fight. I think one commentator said Manfredo looked terrified in the corner before round 3. Its just a shame those 35,000 paying punters didnt get to see a decent stoppage.

This thread was more of a general reference to Terry O'Conner and his reffing ability - If anyone has seen his previous form, they will know what I am talking about.
He's a terrible ref, and should start being held accountable for his actions.

Wasn't he the referee for Bugner Cooper in 1971 ?
Cooper is on record for saying Connor and him still are at odds, as most observers and the audiance felt Cooper had done more than enough to keep his british heavyweight title ?

Your thinking of Harry Gibbs.
Terry O'Connor was Midland Area heavyweight champion in the mid-to-late 70's.

So what? I remember 'God save the queen ' beeing booed heartily when Lennox Lewis beat Lionel Butler in California, it didn't bother me personally but your attitude is typical of the sanctimonious crap we have to put up with from americans and their narrow world view. If I'd had been in Cardiff I woul have booed away and I don't give a monkeys what anyone thinks. Anyone elses national anthem... I would respect it.

He is a poor ref, he refereed me twice when i was a pro and give me two wrong decisions, i admit when i lose or draw but both times he gave it wrong.
He is well known in the midlands as a poor ref

I don't mind so much for people rooting for the local guy, but it only bothers me that everyone these days are 'anti-american' and it wouldn't surprise me none if Tony Blair told everyone to go and persecute Americans, that the Welsh/English would do it.
Time and time again, I say this: don't hate Americans, hate the assholes in Washington. Cus believe you me, not every American is for Bush and for Iraq. I support the troops, all the troops, whether they are American, English etc. But that's all I support over here, cus everything else has went all to hell.
This all greatly reminds me of when Joe Louis fought Max Schmeling, and everyone booed Schmeling tremendously, believing that just because he was German, that he was some 'Nazi Superman' for Hitler, which was far far from the truth as Schmeling helped hide Jews from persecution and didn't believe in a 'Aryan Supremecy'.
People are fickle in general, Brits stand for the Brits, Americans are for the Americans, Irish for the Irish...but I do hold hope that someday, someone (an American) will gain not only the respect, but the admiration of the English. I know its possible, Max Baer and other greats came on over to the Isles and slowly but surely turned blind hatred into courtesy.
That's all I will say on 'country vs country'.

Watch Willie Pep winning a round without firing back once !
Manfredo had already weaved under three shots when Conner intervened. He was perfectly protecting himself, and Calzaghe wasn't landing anything of importance on him.
Conner is probalbly going to get away with it, which is the more troubling fact to me. There's just no accountability in boxing, everybody breaks the rules as he pleases.

Watch Willie Pep winning a round without firing back once !
One of the old myths of boxing @ Willie Pep winning a round without throwing a punch. But even if he did, he would only have won it because nobody was able to land a single blow on him. Was a piss poor example to compare the Manfredo-Calzaghe fight to old Willo-The-Wisp, considering Calzaghe threw and landed quadruple what Manfredo threw and landed.
Importance or not, Calzaghe was going to win anyways. Give or take 20 more seconds Manfredo would have been caught and been down and out. He had no chance to win to begin with, so I don't really see the big fuss or hoopla around the stoppage. What did you all want to see, Manfredo get stopped, get bloodied up, knocked out, killed?
Like you all said, these fights are 'common place' in England, so what else did you really at all expect to see? Course I reckon with having guys like Danny Williams, Matt Skelton, Audley Harrison as the top 3 HW's and novices like Amir Kahn being the headliners...it would drive me up a wall as well.

The point is it has to be effective agression, which clearly wasn't. Manfredo was avoiding the majority of the blows, and that usually scores points too.

Peter was never in any danger of going down, re watch the tapes.
Manfredo's strategy was to let Cal tire himself out; he did the same against Pemberton and was rolling with and blocking the punches on the ropes; Pemberton flurried for 20 seconds, then had to catch a breather, and Manfredo nailed him.
And if you think he was never going to win to begin with, why fight the fights??
