Although I am one who would unhesitantly go for Hagler it must be remembered that good fighters in the forties and fifties like Gavilan typically had over 100 fights in their careers. This gave them the chance to learn every trick in the book and from what I have read Gavilan knew them all. Therefore despite a size disadvantage and lack of comparable power Gavilan would probably be able to hang in there and give Hagler some trouble. Hagler by surprisingly close decision.

Gavilan had problems with boxers, not guys who stood in front of him. Hagler would win, but the style he choose to fight, would decide by how much.
