Didn't see any threads yet about this but Joshua Clottey dominated and won a unanimous decision over Diego Corrales. Scores were : Jerry Griffin 87-100 | Judge: Leo Johnson 89-98 | Judge: David Sutherland 90-97.

I backed Clottey but was surprised it was so one sided...Corrales was dropped in rounds 9 & 10 and cheated again by spitting out his mouthpiece. Clottey is a Welterweight force but the jump was too large for Corrales.

You've got to be concerned for Corrales, he's been in alot of wars Mayweather Jr, Casamayor 3 times, Freitas , Castillo twice and now Clottey.
Even in those fights he won with the above were wars, he's been hurt in nearly every fight since 2003 and that 7 fights at top level.
Hope he's made enough money out of boxing , so he doesn't have to keep on getting hit like that.

Apparently come fight time Clottey wieghed 170lbs!!

Farcical isn't it...Clottey was no Welterweight in there. Still Corrales is as good as done, too many wars and a suspect chin even in his prime.

Doesn't it have seemed a strange fight for Corrales to take , he was jumping 2 divisions, to take on a strong big, solid punching contender who also has a good chin.

Huge miscalculation by Corrales' handlers letting there man anywhere near Clottey.

Clottey is a genuine threat to any Welterweight in the world. His fight with Corrales was exciting albeit one sided. I'm not sure if Corrales was cheating with the mouth piece, his lips and face were pretty swolen and the piece fell out straight as Diego hit the deck. Although if he did spit it out on purpose I don't really blame him, gets my respect for accepting the fight and refusing to quit when he was taking a pounding in the late rounds.

Corrales weighed 160lbs in the ring too.

I've watched the fight and as Corrales fought on the insdie and got a steady battering. Brave as ever i had no idea that his jaw had been broken in the 5th.

There is really nowhere to go for him now. he can't make LWelter. He has a name and plenty of respect from the fans i think he should make the move directly into commentating. He comes across well and is really quite eloquent especially when you consider what his brain must have been through.

Well, what about Joel Casamayor in all of this. He never looked entirely confortable beating what looks to be a shot to pieces Corrales in a extremely close, dull fight.

Could he actually be the champion most ready for the taken (and the most credible) at Lightweight.

I wonder how our Lightweights would do vs Joel Cas.

I said when it was announced that Chico was going to take a bit of a hammering. In a way I admire him, because he was obviously prepared to take on a real risky fight (unlike every prospect from these shores) but in this case, maybe he needed someone to hold him back. Who's to say with Corralles though? I doubt that he'd ever turn down a fight. He'll probably take on Margarito next.

Joel is much smaller than Chico though, and was well outweighed. I give Casamayor credit for stinging Corrales with big shots and easily soaking up Chico's bombs. Casa's ancient but a classy boxer.

Corrales has always had problems with slick fast fighters, but maybe he truly is past it. He needs 2 or 3 rebuilding fights, fighting elite after elite and losing is just too much. A fight against Gatti would be a great crossroads war that Corrales would pull out and it would sell big. Alternatively Corrales maybe cannonfodder for Mosley/Cotto

Corralles moved too far up the weights I think. His punch power was always his biggest weapon and that far up, the size of the opponents is neutralising this. He obviously hasn't carried his power up with him, and his punch resistance is never going to be great at any weight.

I agree James, I have wondered if he has altered his training regime in recent years (maybe his fame has got to his head). I remember when he came back from his stint in Jail he had a dietition on board and claimed he could make Super Feather EASY. This was evident when he put in two decent performances in terms of strength and stamina vs Casamayor. Now all of a sudden he seems to be struggling to make 147.

Would love to see Clottey challenge Cotto. I like Clottey's repertoire, fierceness and defense. He says he's going to win a world title and then have a football career with Man Utd.

I'm tired of the hypocriscy on every forum.

Corrales makes an ambitious step, loses and we gets comments like "what was Diego thinking?" "he shouldn't have gone near Clottey".

Perhaps he was thinking, I'm a fighter and I dont want soft touches. Meaningful fights with genuine fighters.

Of course, he could have taken N'Dou's challenge at Welter or perhaps looked for a soft touch champion.

No, he went for a hard-as-nails contender.

Well done Diego and good luck, we keep saying a loss needn't mean the end of a career. Perhaps we should mean it.

David, i have huge respect for Corrales taking on Clottey, but it wasn't a wise decision to do it. Now Corrales will have to either fight for chump change in the hope of rebuilding his career, or retire.

I don't think there's any hypocrisy involved here at all.

Making the leap to Welterweight was a big step, after all he got absolutely nailed by Castillo at lightweight not so long ago, even the fight he won he took a pounding.

He took another battering in his career, and seems likely to take more if he stays at his current weight.

How many times can a fighter go to the well like Corralles has?

I havent seen the fight yet but if it was competitive even with Corrales suffering a broken jaw, then he cant be totally shot as some are saying. Chico has had a lot of wars but he;s a throw back to a time when thats what fighters did, they liked to fight the best and they didnt shirk from wars.... if he still wants it then I can still see some good fights out there for Corrales... the Gatti fight would be interesting as would a 3rd bout with Castillo at 140 if Castillo gets past Hatton....

I think the Gatti fight is a good idea. Corrales looks vunerable at this weight, is close to the end of the road and in no mans land as far as weight categories.
Gatti wants a final big fight but it should be against a respectable but beatable opponent. Gatti himself would get battered by any world class established Welter.

They are both well liked warriors. I'd like to see this as a retirement bout for both.

Yes, a Gatti fight is a natural, and they both started around the same weight category, both are nearer the end than the beginning, both have similar fighting hearts, seems a natural fight to be made.

A lot more sensible than sticking Corralles in with a young hungry, durable and strong welterweight contender in his prime.

How come Gatti's name is still doing the rounds? To think of him in the ring again against anyone remotely decent makes me shudder, Gatti seems a decent combination away from a wheelchair to me. No more wars needed.
