Toneys next fight. Talk about a step into nowhere. What exactly does this do for Toney?

The way Toney was slurring after his last fight his next step should be retirement.

other reports suggest Toney is fighting Liakhovic. Either way I've no desire to follow any more of his fights. That heavyweight attempt was a farce.

Toney should be banned... his speech has become indecipherable... havent any of the promoters/doctors etc etc even come close to noticing this?... or are they just waiting for him to be carried out of a ring on a stretcher?...

The trouble is, you cannot ban someone for 'slurred speech.' Theoretically, this could be caused by any one of a number of conditions, but in Toney's case, seems likely to be a result of a long career in boxing.

Ironically, Toney hasn't taken a great deal of punishment in his career, but think of all those thousands of rounds of sparring he's done over a 20 year career, and it is not hard to see why he's slurring so badly.

The commissions would need to find evidence of neurological damage before they could ban him. As far as I am aware, the standard tests only pick up damage at the point at which areas of the brain are seriously damaged.

He's taken 100s of half landed shots, good punches that he rode with. Also took a fair few rabbit shots in Peter 1, but in truth you couldn't tell what he was on about prior to the Holyfield fight.

Toney always sounded like you couldn't understand what he said.

He was talking like that when he was promising us he'd get rid of Ruiz.

Toney talked a whole lot different in his middleweight days... the difference between then and now is shocking!...

I'd make that 1000's of half-landed shots, not to mention the amount of bombs he's blocked that have sent shockwaves. He also took a nasty back of the head beating from Ernest 'M-16' Mateen on the DLH-Hernandez undercard. Seem to remember him looking concussed in kowtow after Mateen was kicked out, which says it all - he's the type with too good of a chin for his own health. To be honest it's a shame the Peter fights had to happen at all because his speech has noticeably deteriorated, steadily over a number of years. He'll never quit now, though.

I don't see how a Toney-Jirov fight would mean anything as of now. It would have, had both men done it when they made the move to HW. Jirov has been on the shelf for a while, and Toney is in limbo.

As a boxing fan, iono if I'd want to see that match up, as it would have no real meaning or worth. That would be like having Jirov-Mesi 2, its no longer of importance. What Toney needs to do is go after a lesser HW or maybe a few bouts of lesser degree, while Jirov needs to make a step up.

But Jirov-Toney 2 has no appeal. It'd take a master con make like P.T. Barnum to sell that one.

I think it does have some appeal.... It will show just how far (if at all) Toney has slipped.

It has appeal in Eastern Europe. Both men should have stayed at cruiser. They both fvcked up big time and in truth they deserve to fall in obscurity for their arrogance & stupidity. Happy Day!

I think that is a bit harsh on Jirov, maybe both. Although, at least Jirov looked in good shape as a Heavy.

It IS the money devision and I think "good on him" (Jirov) for giving it a go. Good on him for him admitting it wasn't to be... bit of a mistake to return there though - the Cruiserweight devision is buzzing and I think a fight with him vs Mormeck still could be the biggest match in the devision if marketed correctly. Remember, he earned a lot of new fans after the Toney fight and many thought he would rule the devision for years when Toney stepped up.

As for Toney, I don't think anyone was calling him stupid when he toyed with Holyfield and beat up Ruiz. After that, yes he's been pretty stupid.

I think people have forgotton just how popular Jirov vs Toney 1 was, considered a fight of the year even mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Gatti vs Ward (I never considered it that good). Of course, it will drum up a fair amount of interest and its probably the best fight for both parties at this stage of their careers. If Toney wins, he's probably back in the world mix (well, he's there currently but it will cement his position)... If Jirov wins, well it opens alot of closed doors.

couldnt believe the scoring in that one though, i had it closer and even roach told toney he needed a knock down at the start of the 12th. scores were wide as hell, without checking im sure all were 118 - 110 ish
