Hennessy keen to continue Froch-Calzaghe negotiations

Given the lack of clarification on the terms of allegedly’s offer for British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch to challenge WBO champion Joe Calzaghe, Froch’s promoter Mick Hennessy has tabled a proposal of his own to stage the all-British super fight on a Hennessy Sports event either this July or September.

“After being made aware of allegedly’s comments over the last few days, I’m pleased to confirm that negotiations have started with his company Sports Network about a super fight between Carl Froch and Joe Calzaghe,” confirmed Hennessy.

“We were keen to negotiate this fight in the background to its conclusion, but articles published in the News of the World, The Nottingham Evening Post and the Guardian have left me no option but to go on record and address this matter.”

Hennessy explained: “Sports Network’s matchmaker first got in touch with us at the end of last week to ask if we were serious about making the fight. I said: ‘of course: very serious’.

“I explained we were fine with it being staged by Sports Network if the deal was right, but stressed that there couldn’t be any options on Carl Froch’s future fights.

“The matchmaker suggested that this could pose a problem and that allegedly would require some kind of options if Carl beat Calzaghe, but told me that he would get back to me. I then received a simple text on Saturday morning with a money offer for July or September, but there was no mention of the situation regarding options.

“I requested clarification on their position regarding options in writing to our fax number, but received nothing. The lack of response suggests there is an issue, but this would appear to contradict allegedly’s comments in the Guardian yesterday. At this moment, their stance on options is still unclear to me.

“I am happy to continue negotiations for Carl to box on a Sports Network event, but need to know they won’t require an involvement in Carl’s career after the fight if he wins. Given allegedly’s apparent confidence in Calzaghe, it would be a contradiction if they did.”

Unbeaten British and Commonwealth champion Froch has been promoted by Hennessy since his professional debut five years ago. He is currently ranked third by the WBO and second by the WBC, having stopped 17 of his 21 victims. He will move up a position in both rankings once Bute is removed for contesting a final eliminator for the IBF championship, leaving him at #1 with the WBC.

Hennessy has long claimed a fight between the Nottingham boxer and Calzaghe is a marquee affair that would create significant nationwide and global interest. In order to make it happen, he has attempted to set the politics aside and made a firm offer of his own.

“This is a massive fight, between two of the best fighters in the world who both happen to be British,” added Hennessy. “Joe Calzaghe is a great champion and a true warrior. I believe it will take a very special fighter to beat him, but I believe Carl Froch to be just that.

“This is a marquee contest that needs to happen and options shouldn’t get in the way. As such, I have attempted to put all the confusion to one side and made an offer to stage the fight in either July or September.

“I feel the offer was very generous. If you take the amounts that the champion and challenger receive from WBO purse bids, (75/25%), my offer values the total fight at twice the amount of allegedly’s. It would also result in Joe Calzaghe receiving 6 times the amount of Sports Network’s offer to Carl.”

Unfortunately, the proposal has already been knocked back.

“Within an hour of sending the offer, it was turned down by their matchmaker,” said Hennessy a short while ago. “The text offer to Carl was also re-iterated as a final offer, but did not mention whether they required options or not.

“I have again sought clarification on this. There is little point in us even discussing the offer they have made for Carl to box on a Sports Network show until we know their position for certain.

“Once they have stated in writing, as requested, that they do not require options, we can look at the possibility seriously. They have stated that the offer was their last, but I am confident that through ongoing dialogue we could come to an arrangement that reflects the magnitude of this fight.

“This contest could be one of the biggest in British Boxing history. Calzaghe already holds the record for the highest indoor attendance, but it would be blown away if he met Carl Froch.

“I see Jermain Taylor has turned a big offer down. There now isn’t a bigger viable fight out there for Calzaghe, so I’m hopeful his team will be realistic going forward.

“In light of their rejection, I have also asked what terms would be acceptable to Joe Calzaghe to defend against Carl on one of our shows. I am still very hopeful that this contest can happen, regardless of whose event it is on.”

Are deals often discussed by text message? I think it would be daft for that fight to happen now maybe 4 or 5 fights down the line when froch has had title fight experiance and hopefuly a title to defend that would make it a much more valuble fight.

Calzaghe won't be around 4-5 fights down the line.

I'd personally love to see this fight, I would make Calzaghe favourite for sure, but Carl would give it a bloody good go, and certainly wouldn't come to piss around like Manfredo.

I hope this happens as it's one of those UK interest fights that would be a great fight. Froch is a hard bastard who carries late power. He's also clearly ready to step up.

With Kessler and Taylor out, Roy Jones unrealistic and Mundine keeping quiet, this is the most appetising fight. I think Warren will be under some pressure to deliver something good.

Hope we get a treat in July. Looks like SN are evading the "options" issue. If the fight doesn't happen we all know why.

Let's say Froch doesn't happen - if you can trust SN to smeg up negotiations go the mandatory route. That would leave WBO#1 Inkin, a fighter equally as good as Froch (and a more sensible technician).

If they don't deliver anything of worth in July it'd be appalling.

Calzaghe in my view will have 3 or 4 more fights because he isn't being hurt by the manner of fights he is taking and therefor can hang on longer, Froch is more busy than Clazaghe and so could potencialy have a title by that time.

Good fight though it is at the moment it will be seen state side as a domestic affair, Froch needs to beat up a couple of yanks first.

Making offers and dealing with people by text message suggests allegedly allegedly is not too serious about making the fight. If Warren is confident in Calzaghe so much, then why would he require options on Carl's career afterwards?

I really do hope Calzaghe-Froch does happen. Calzaghe-Mandfredo was a farce, over before it had even started. All it was was a home-coming party for Joe. Calzaghe was not tested at all, even if the fight was stopped prematurely. Froch is no Manfredo.

Carl is hungry and imrproving as a boxer. However, Froch hasn't faced the calibre of an opponent such as Calzaghe. I believe Froch would give Calzaghe his sternest test to date, maybe even win.

I suppose we should try to take some positive out of it all, and that can only be that negotiations have stated between both camps. I'm not hopeful they will progress from here though.

You know what fcuk building up this fight, how many times have we seen potentially good fights never happen because one party or both felt their fighter/s could get a few more fights under their belt to raise the fighters profile only for one fighter to slip up along the way. Ive seen almost all of Carl Froch's fights and whatever his short comings may be he's NEVER in a dull fight(ok Matthew Barney, but against Barney who isnt? ). At 29/30 Carl aint getting any better lets get this fight on...can't see it going the distance and if I'm free I'd definitely buy a ticket - Carl would definitely give it more of a ago than Manfredo.

I've made known my admiration for Calzaghe on this forum, but I'm losing that. Taking on Manfredo has reduced his credibility for me, not increased it.

Entepreneur's take risks and thus the profits when it goes to plan are justified, but IMO Sports Network never take any risks.....at all....

Joe needs to take on a credible oppponent now, because he's losing the admiration of a lot of fans...

I see Froch as being like a stronger David Starie. Not sure why really.

I'm still dreaming of Calzaghe using Dean Francis as a LH tune-up.

At least a fight with Froch could never be as dull as his one with Starie.

but they need something respectable and quick. I suspect Warren would be happy to line up an easy stiff while Joe waits for Taylor. But the top 10 is a strong one now, the pressure is on him to give something back to boxing after the Apr 7 farce and ITV sound like they won't take any more shit.

Alternative is Inkin, which gets a pesky mandatory out of the way. Inkin's as good as Froch, but a bit obscure.

I think Inkin it will be, mind you I doubt Joe will fight in July. Whats up with Mundine?

calzaghe would start as favourite against froch but joes hands are so so fragile, if he develops a problem in the fight then he will not, no way, beat froch with one hand.

I cant see Joe be ready for July fight, he only fought twice a year for last 5 years?

backing straight up and fighting hands down would make things tough for Froch. But he's a heavy hitter and ready to be let off his leash and it could be a good fight.

Could be but being Power reliant will cost Froch I think.

Warren is known for asking rediculous options from the challenger. I know guys like Otis grant, Lucian Bute and A. Green turned down a fight with Calzaghe because of it.

In the case of Grant, Warren wanted options on the next 5 (minimum) fights of Grant if he won. He was going to be the exlusive promoter of those fights and Grant was to receive a pre determined purse no matter who he was facing. Warren also wanted option even if Grant lost that fight with Calzaghe.

That guy is nuts.

Maybe he wishs he has grey hair, a ton of gold chains and an only In America slogan?

Perhaps this Is why he demands options.

Its only considered a threat to boxing by boxing fans it seems!

UFC 70 this weekend in Manchester is live on Setanta PPV not Bravo.

Allegedly is a bigger threat to Boxing than UFC. Calzaghe is fast losing any credibility, a fight with Inkin (yes i know he is good before i get attacked!!) will be another nail in the coffin. Froch-Calzaghe won't happen, what is all this options bollocks about? Can't these clowns make a fight between them without pissing about?

There is no way this happens without options on Froch which is why this is a non starter.

I think we all know Calzaghe won't fight in July so why not fight Kessler in September? If Calzaghe ends up fighting September or later and the opponent is anyone but Kessler people need to seriously start washing their hands of him.
