How do people make weight?

What techniques are used? Is it best to sweat it out in a sauna or sweat suit? dehydrate yourself? and how close to your weigh in to do it. What weigh in rules are there for amature boxing?

As I understand it the pros mostly use diarectics (sp) to piss out as much water as possible

I heard an old pro's trick the other day, which I'd never heard before, which was to eat a lemon before you go to bed the night before the fight.

Apparently it makes you piss like nobodies business and it acts as a natural diuretic.

Bobby Chacon used to have eucalyptus leaves rubbed all over him in the sauna because it opened the pores more enabling more sweating.
Personaly i think he was just a pervert.

Even more effective is chomping down a bottle of Vitamin C

Getting the diet and training right in the first place is the most important thing.

PN (judging by his username) knows what he is talking about here.

Its quite simple really... he right and expend more calories than you intake. The weight will fall.

If struggling then maybe you should cut down on the carbs and focus on the protein... it might give you expensive piss - but the weight should really fall off.

Note: I'm not at all recommending the latter method as its quite drastic and will have a major impact on your performance - but if its a big money fight and your not looking likely to make the weight, then that is probably the best natural method in losing the weight... Of course, Sweatsuits/Sauna's etc would be better in the week leading to the fight -and then take on PLENTY of fluids from weigh in.

Really? What effect does that have? I know there isn't a lethal dose with vitamin C, but surely that cannot be good for you.

I looked it up yesterday, and it does appear that lemons are quite a powerful natural diuretic, amongst many other quite interesting properties.

I do that in my local pub all the time.

If the steak in Archie's local was like the steak in mine then he could have used the meat to make his boxing gloves after.

Vitamin C is a diuretic by virtue of the kidneys needing to flush out any unused Viamin C. So the body will use all of its water to flush. It is ofcourse very unhealthy and will ruin your kidneys in the long term, not to mention you will suffer a degree of Vit C poisening.

The trick is to drink tons of water up until a day before the event (your body gets rid of more water if it used to a higher intake), completely cut the water a day before and bump up any diuretics natural/legal or otherwise and of course laxative and even enemas could shed a fair bit more water. All fo this may weaken the fighter to some extent.

Before you get into anything like that DROP YOUR BODYFAT. The best cutting regime consists of green veg and either lean chicken breasts/lean turkey breasts or cod or tuna. Completely cutting any other calories but eating plenty of the forementioned

Also thermogenics such as sida cordifolia (legal ephedra), synephrine, caffiene, yohimbine should be used continously from 4-8 weeks out because if everything else is equal they can take 5-10lbs off your weight if used properly

Forgot to mention that, when cutting protein grams should ideally be 1.5-3grams of protein per gram of bodyweight (so a 200lb man should be aiming for 300grams of protein per day), and should be consumed 5 times daily while keeping carbs and fats very low. For that you probably need a Whey Protein Isolate supplement

Also if you have the cash/sponsership (supplement company) mega dosing on aminos like glutamine/bcaas/hmb will make cutting allot easier while dieting.

Hi Colin, hope you're well mate and parenthood is being kind to you.

Yes I forgot you used to say I bore similarities to Kevin Lear (and not his boxing skills), lately it's been Paul Robinson (the England & Spurs keeper) that has apparently lifted my 'look'.

Either way I cannae see it.

You seem to know your shit PM. It shows you how important having a dietician and nutritionist in your camp can be these days.

I did hear that water retention is actually caused by being dehydrated, your body holds onto the water because it has been deprived of it. This would explain why a lot of fighters find it very hard to shift those last few pounds if they are massively overweight and spend the last two weeks killing themselves to make weight.

Surely there is an argument to be made for simply staying in the gym, and fighting nearer your natural weight class, like Bernard Hopkins did. Look how long his career has been, and how successful he was in his late 30's. It's surely no accident that heavyweights, the one bunch of guys who don't have to cut weight (except for Bowe and Toney), tend to have prolonged careers and are often still fighting at top level well into their 30's.

All this cutting weight in the long run surely has to be bad for the system, no matter which way you do it?

When drying out timing is very important. Restricting water a week out is not a good ploy. Also after a while your body won't be as responsive to diuretics etc because it will become less responsive to them. The idea behind drinking lots of water up until a few days out is your body becomes accustomed to having too much water and then when u take the water away and put in a diuretic it completely drys you out.

Cutting is bad for your system but so is getting hit in the head by a much bigger man  - see Gatti-Gamache. In the long term kidneys/liver could be affected and perhaps the colon. In the short term muscle cells and hence strength will be damaged or drained and brain fluid maybe not sufficient to cussion blows.

Hopkins isn't the best example of someone who doesn't cut weight because at 160 he'd still come into the ring as much as 172lbs. Mayweather and Barrera seem to be the only 2 fighters around at the moment that fight at the weight they weigh in at. Interestingly BHOPs seemed to have more stamina recently at 175 than 160.

At the moment its baring out there is a happy medium in weight cutting. Mayweather and Barrera are clearly weak at there weight classes and get by on skill alone. 7-12lbs of weight to put on seems to be enough to be big at the weight and enough not to overly weaken the system from starving and dehydrating the body. I think Hatton has put on 15lbs in the past but against Tyszu (his best) he only weighed 148 and looked much better for it. Cotto looked dead at 140 when putting on 19lbs so that was far too much for his body and 13lbs seems a good weight for him to put on at 147. Then again Pacman managed to put on 14-16lbs at 130 without affecting his performance at all while Morales looked dead from doing the same. Weight draining is easier on the body if you have good nutrition before and after the weigh in. I have my suspicions Pacman goes beyond the world of nutrition to get his results though.

Cotto, Morales, Pacquaio and Delahoya clearly show how weight draining can be beneficial but when you get too tight at a weight you need to gradually move up.

I remember Hopkins being quoted as saying that his walk around weight was very close to 160, which means he was fighting very near his natural weight.

It's possible he did a bit of weight training to bulk up a little before fights, and so entered the ring heavier, but he was a natural middleweight.

At his age though, he is bound to fill out a bit, and he was probably training like a madman between bouts to keep his weight down, but that is surely still better than using artificial means to make weight.

Hopkins does seem to have benefitted from a move up, but at 42, that's no surprise.

I really wish there were more restrictions made on making weight, I'm glad to see that some of the sanctioning bodies are getting serious about weight making and having check weights at 30 days etc. I also think that there should be a maximum weight in the ring on the night.
