Oboh pulls out with an hour to go???

WBC #1 cruiserweight David Haye (19-1, 18 KOs) stepped up to the heavyweight division to demolish WBC #11 Tomasz Bonin (37-3, 20 KOs) in just 1:45 on Friday night at Wembley Arena in London. Haye put Bonin on the deck three times before referee Ian John-Lewis stopped the slaughter. Haye, who risked his mandatory title shot against WBC cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck, stated "I want the world cruiserweight title and I believe I can knock Mormeck out."
The co-feature between light heavyweights Peter Oboh and Tony Oakey was scuttled when Oboh pulled out on one-hour notice
Can anyone give any details on this?

From what I could work out it , Oboh was claiming an arm injury. He basically had got to the show before telling everyone he was pulling out.
He didn't make much sense when talking to the SKY reporter.
Hopefully Tony Oakey will get paid, he was all ready to fight, feel bad for him.
Apparently Oboh had been rightly stripped of the British Title, and Oakey has been told he will be fighting for the vacant title next. Brian Magee might be the opponent for that fight.

The board may well strip him, but they need to have a sit down and find out the reasons behind it.
Reactionary from Simon Block and he was wrong to say OBOH would never fight in a British Ring again.
WHERE IS DEAN POWELL AND FRANK MALONEY?
SPEAK!

Johnny Nelson just keeps going up in my estimation. He might not be right but it was very believable when he said that Oboh has been messed around that much in his career, he turned the tables on all involved and tried to give 'boxing' a taste of its own medicine.

Can't agree there, how is mucking about Tony Oakley going to help either of these guys careers, Maloney was offering Oboh a 3 fight deal, all fights garunteed inside of a year of this contest. He could have caused crowd trouble as well, luckily the fans of Oakley behaved well when the news was annouced.
Oboh was trying to say that since he last fought he's been basically blacklisted, and that if he won against Oakley he wouldn't be able to fight again for another 3 years because of boxing politics. Sorry but thats bollocks.
Simon Block was out of order saying that Oboh would never fight in a british ring again, there needs to be a full account from Oboh at a proper hearing before any action should be taken.
I'm wondering if its not something else with Oboh. Why would he walk away from a £9000 pay day, for a fight most people thought he'd win quite handily. Maybe tests might show something

Not saying Oboh's right at all - totally take your points. Am just saying in his mind, that's what it might have been.

No Worries, its just such a wierd thing to have happened, he turned up with his bag as well, and must have been prepared to fight right up until the last minute.
Dean Powell's face was total shock, he looked paler than i've ever seen him, must have forgot the fake tan.

I think so!
I heard that OBOH even travelled to Africa for a fight last year (?) only for it to be called off on the day, where were the people protecting him then?
His managers - Promoter etc? - who knows?

mikee, do u really think glen johnson gonna fight oboh! are u gonna put the match on? oboh has no promoter , so no tv and cant sell a ticket, so thats why he has not fought for 3 years...add to the fact that he is very dangerous, no challenger is gonna fight Oboh 4 peanuts without tv backing... Dean Powell is Warrens matchmaker and he cant even get him a fight..the money oboh was getting was nothing much and he is the champ.. the challenger gets 40 per cent, so less money and the show was on tv. add 8 weeks of training costs and a no tv show. u work it out, peanuts for a nightmare fight. thats why oboh has not fought for so long! poor oakey, been in tenerife, more money down the drain!

I was not being 100% serious....
1. Why does Oboh not have a promoter? I would look into the fact that Oboh might be pricing himself out/being too inflexible, rather than being too dangerous. Who else has been out for 3 years and suffered it? He should have swallowed pride and signed with a Promoter after 12 months out, not let it drag for 3 years....
2. No fighter will face him? How many times do we hear that? Oakey wanted to fight him last night, an earlier post said OBOH was getting 9K, meaning Oakey took the fight for maybe 5k? hardly danger money is it?
3. Dean Powell being Warrens matchmaker cant get him a fight? not one fight? the african commonwealth challengers always turn up for a row. not one fight could have been made?

and another thing..... lol
Are you saying Peter Oboh is the greatest LHW out there? of course you are not. Ergo, there are people out there who have the handling of him. If he is regarded as dangerous, a win over him is a good thing -
or....
what was stopping Oboh building his name up at euro level? taking dangerous fights himself, taking a pay cut to get his name out there, and letting the big fights come.
or....
sit on your bottle for 3 years....

I think OBOHS plan was to stuff Maloney etc..
SO, HE DID!
Where if Frank Maloney?

Great scoop Ian, fascinating.
When reading that, and that alone... you can maybe think its UNDERSTANDABLE (I'm not condoning it) why Oboh did what he did. But I still think a day before pull out would have been more effective for Oboh to achieve the maximum damage. The last minute pull out didn't really affect Maloney's pocket.... fans turned up, where obviously annoyed but I think Maloney's appologies in the ring meant that the majority understood and the Oakey fans would come again.... They wouldn't be elligable for refunds.
A day before pull out would have hundreds of Oakey fans on the blower asking for a refund etc. I'm sure not the best way to prepare for a TV show.
Personally think it was a spare of the moment thing and Oboh bottled it. Three years is a long time out... its not like riding a bike, there the punches and the crowd to re-adjust to. One of the things Tommy Morrison said was most difficult in his comeback fight was dealing with the crowd. I think he bottled it. The fact that he said its probably retirement now emphasises it to me. I know he realises he will be at least frozen out in the UK, but then the likes of Johnny Nelson earned a few bob abroad when frozen out.
I did think the guy from the BBBoC was a bit harsh on Oboh when interviewed on Sky. Yes, no British title fights ever again - but "never box in a British ring"... maybe a bit OTT. Surely it would be up to the individual promoter
You do have to question, how many times in the last 3 years has it been a controllable "fault" of Oboh's as the reason for not fighting.

I was there some Oakey fans just left after the announcement. I was looking forward to watching it. Salem earlier looked quite good.

Oboh is a disgrace to boxing.

All my sympathies lay with Oakey. He looked absolutely gutted! :(
Oboh had an opponent ready and willing to take up the challenge and HE'S the one walking out the building. Absolute disgrace.
Oboh would probably struggle to sell a 100 tickets and he wants to call the shots ???? Doesn't work like that and at his age he should damn well know it.
Simon Block is spot on....he shouldn't be allowed to box again in British ring

Tony Oakey is a sound bloke, i have seen him at shows before when Wayne Elcock was sparing him, I know he's been training very hard for this fight and will be gutted, Oboh, if he was going to pull out should have done it the day before, he was'nt injured because a bbofc doctor checked him out, if he wanted to get someone back its backfired the man is now untouchable for most UK based promoters i recon.

You have to feel sorry for Oakey on this one -- his career has pretty much went down the toilet and he can't seem to recover. Before his split decision loss to Barney, he was appearing on Showtime here in the US and they were talking him up as a potential challenge to Calzaghe (although I don't know how realistic that really was -- but he was at least hyped up in the US, and Showtime helped put guys like Hatton and Calzaghe on the map for those of us on this side of the Atlantic). This is just another bad break that keeps him from rebuilding himself.

Things don't look to bad for Oakey , he's being lined up to fight Brian Magee , SKY have 2 dates 1 in June and the other in July for the fight.
Magee is happy with the fight as well, so Maloney is trying to find a site in either Portsmouth of Belfast thats free on those dates.

That's a big step up for him, but he's pretty much got to do something at 32. I think he should take a tune-up before Magee (Oboh would've been a solid test to see where he is), especially considering Magee has been more active of late with a far higher-class of fighter.
