The Pocket Rocket returns.

Wayne McCullough has finally got the opportunity to return to action after a two years out of the ring.
During this two years Wayne has been linked with numerous World title/World class opponents. Thankfully, the reality is his comeback will be on the undercard of Bernard Dunne's EBU title defence.
First time he has fought in Ireland since 1996. What an atmosphere that will be, Wayne is absolutely loved in Ireland.

Same with Ben Dunne and John Duddy. Wayne did what I would encourage many British fighters to do. He got the best trainer, and despite their differences I don't think anyone can fault Matt Tindley (I think that was his name) in the early years. Everyone of Wayne's early fights was shown on US TV.
Wayne was brave to do that and he was much better as a boxer as a result

Wayne has won a world title, but fallen short many time ssince. What is he going to do better?
He also took many shots - he should get out and work on beinhg a trainer.

Don't know if this is a precursor to Brian Peters setting up a Bernard Dunne Vs Wayne McCullough bout.

GOOD CALL!
best wishes
"T.M.K"
ps: I have to say though: "I hope not". McCullough has had what, 6 world title challenges in 10 years since h gave up his Bantamweight crown, and it finally seems as if the world titles are gonna stop being offered to him....which in a way shows he has gone down a bit, to Euro level, and to be honest I think Dunne would pick him off all night. Would be kinda sad to see. I'd rather he did a couple of fairwell fights against no-hopers to be honest.

Well if anyone expected me to come on here with an all guns blazing, Waynes the man response then you are wrong...
I wouldnt look forward to a Dunne-McCullough fight, Dunnes class and Wayne is ageing..
Waynes got a great training career and of course I know full well that Wayne wouldnt be fighting if he was unfit, I just hope if the Dunne fight comes off the pocket rocket isnt trounced, hes far too good for that

I actually don't think there is any shame in him continuing after the Larios rematch. He took a battering, but seemed to be over the worst of it and was (arguably) winning the last couple of rounds when the Dr/Ref intervened.
If Wayne is still like that, then him and Dunne would be a fantastic fight.
The one thing that keeps me upbeat about this comeback is the views of Kevin Kelley. Kevin has said Wayne is sharp, Wayne has said Kevin is not shot also and looked as good as he has for years. So far, you have to say Wayne hasn't been exagerating regarding Kelly (scored a few decent wins and a couple of close calls).... Lets hope Kelly is right re Wanye.

You may well be right, and anyone has to accept Kelleys opinion, hes a man who has proven age is no barrier...
I just think im worried, after a nights sleep I think I was a bit harsh....
Lets see how the first fight goes, as I said, if Wayne thinks hes past it im sure he would have no desire to damage his reputation

Dunne has stated on RTE that he never wants to fight McCullough, citing that Wayne is his hero and he doesn't want to be one of those fighters who beats up his idol.

Not sure Tom, in yesterdays Irish News he didn't dismiss the idea but agreed that a bigger title needs to be on the line. As for McCullough well he is a little disillusioned i'm afraid, he has been carving out a decent career as a trainer handling Alex Arthur (briefly), Enrique Ornelas and Librado Andrade. Getting back into the ring is a mistake IMO he is a bit of a world class punchbag now and if he isn't going to be campaigning at world class then why bother returning?
On another McCullough note i read recently in Claude Abrams column that allegedly was looking to make Wayne V Kevin Mitchell but McCullough refused as it was too big of a weight jump. Why AGAIN were they looking to put one their men in with a smaller fighter? I don't care how experienced a stepping stone McCullough would be he is a career Bantamweight or Feather at best, Mitchell is a big Super Featherweight. Ridiculous.

FW prob feels Mitchell is to small for Wayne!
Khan will prob get the job himself!

Hasn't he already failed a medical re. brain injury at some point or am I thinking of someone else? Anyway, he took a lot of punishment in his last fight, and with ringrust and what have you, he's only going to take more. He should stick to training and punditting (if that's a word!)

Youre not serious are you?... Kellys been shot for the past 10 years!.... with him and Wayne I'm afraid its the blind leading the blind, both great guys and excellent fighters in their time, but neither man knows when to quit and theyre going to carry on till theyre badly beaten or hurt...

Kevin got shafted against Manuel Medina, and since Medina has been operating at true world level in recent years that looks like an excellent performance..
Im not saying it the same Kelley who beat Goyo Vargas by the way

Well I havent seen that fight but the last I saw of Medina he was pretty shopworn himself... Kelley still has some class and probably did well against Medina partly because Medina is not a puncher... Wayne worries me more than Kevin really as he takes far more punishment on the whole... I dont care how tough or fit you are, if you keep taking the amount of punches that Wayne does then youre heading for trouble...

Kelley is faded and more vulnerable than ever (body shots especially) but I don't think he is shot. He outboxed Hernandez and Medina and him put together a bit of a classic by all accounts. Even against Bobby Pacquiao he was doing okay untill the body shots took over.
Medina has looked pretty much the same fighter as ever in recent times. He did run out of steam in the dying moments vs Baloyi - but before that was looking good.... and in the fight before that he put on a clinic. I expect Medina to win the IBF title when he gets his chance.
Shot is Michael Ayers' final fight.
I would say Eamonn Magee is more shot than Kevin Kelley.

Magee more shot than Kelley?.... Magee hasnt been getting koed everytime he goes in with decent opposition has he?.... theres different degrees of 'shot' Ali was pretty much shot after Manila but still managed to beat some dangerous opposition... Magees past his best and his legs have gone but I wouldnt say he is more shot than Kelley...

Slight exageration... EVERY DECENT name.... I'm sorry but Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales are a bit more than Decent. Bobby Pacquiao hit him with a shot in an area which he admits isn't as strong as it was - due to the damage Marco and Erik did to him there.
Humberto Soto .... current world champion (interim) with 25 KO's.... Kelley beat him on points in 2002. NO KD's
Juan Carlos Ramirez.... Former 3 time world title challenger... Kelley KO'd him in 2 in 2006. Kelley wasn't put down.
Carlos Hernandez... Former world champion, Kelley gave him a bit of a lesson and beat him in 2006 (far more comfortably than Bobby Pacquiao did). Kelley wasn't put down.
Jose Reyes - Fringe world class Lightweight.... Kelley beat him widely on points in 2005. Kelley wasn't put down.
The FACT is since 1997 and Naz, Kelley has lost 6 times. To Derrick Gainer (points),Benito RodrÃguez (points) Morales, Barrera, Pacquao (all stoppages) and Manuel Medina (disputed points).
Like Pocket Rocket... I'm not championing Kelley to another title fight, but his resume also suggests he is not as shot as people make out. Barrera and Morales would have had him in his absolute prime.... it might not have been as easy but he they would have.... Derrick Gainer SHOULD have beaten him in his prime.
I know it was early, but Kelley was making Bobby Pacquiao look silly up untill he got tagged.
The reason why think Magee is more shot because he is now taking flush shots we would have parried, rode, or slipped before.... The reaction are not there and the handspeed isn't what it was he could counter effectively against Anderson and was pretty much mesmorised by a pawing Takaloo jab.
Kelley is undoubtedly weaker to the body than before... but his handspeed is still sharp and his movements are okay. He's still got the power and whilst the manner of the 3 KO defeats were bad (particularly the non shows vs Morales and Marco) he still chalked up some very decent wins that have gone largely unnoticed.

Well its splitting hairs really, I actually thought that Magee looked much better against Anderson than he did against Tak... and Anderson fought a good fight... nodoubt Magee has slowed and is a lot less mobile than he was but its hardly surprising considering what he;s been through... I still think that he could hold his own with most domestic rivals... I thought the scoring was well off against Anderson I had it much closer...
the difference between Magee and Kelley and Wayne is that Magee still gets hit less than the other two, even though he's getting hit more than he did... both Wayne and Kelley have always had porous defences and are now getting hit more than ever....

He should retire before he gets really hurt....
He's got a phenomenal chin and he's too brave for his own good. He hasn't got decent KO power so all his fights are going to be long, unless he TKOs someone....
Hang up your gloves Wayne, you've been a great champ but your best days are over.
He's been an "opponent" and nothing more since he was beaten by Naz....

I don't think the Larios fight effected him that badly. The one that really took its toll on him was the fight against Scott Harrison.
