WBO orders Katsidis-Diaz!

Tuesday, May 15 2007

The WBO has ruled that negotiations begin immediately for a title bout between world champion Juan Diaz and interim champion Michael Katsidis. Katsidis was scheduled for a big May 26 USA coming out party on HBO, but opponent Joan Guzman pulled out leaving Katsidis in the cold. Needless to say, Team Katsidis is thrilled by the news. "Michael Katsidis and Brendon Smith (trainer/manager) would personally like to thank Mr Francisco Valcalel for enforcing the mandatory and to make one of the greatest fights ever to be seen in the lightweight division," said Smith in an email. "This is the reason why we have been loyal to the WBO for so many years. 'Paco' is a good man and the WBO is a great organization, who have treated us very well."

I really hope this fight comes off, I dont give Katsidis much chance but if he can put up a good fight it will be great for his career. If he wins he will be right up there with the top 135 pounders.

There's a thread about this on current scene but I didn't realise that it was WBO mandated, I just thought it was a rumor.

Its a great fight but its also a HUGE step up for Katsidis. I probably would have liked to see him have at least a couple more fights before taking on this challenge but best of luck to him, I hope he makes the most of it! I'm sure the fans will win if this fight comes off...

It is a huge step up for Katsidis and i also think he should have had at least 1 or 2 more fights against the likes of Earl.
I just watched the Freitas-Diaz fight and if Katsidis can put a lot of pressure on without tiring he may have a chance, Frietas was doing well in the early rounds before tiring.

My head says Diaz to win by UD, But i have a feeling that Katsidis may suprise him early and with his punching power could easily get a stoppage.

Do you think Freitas-Diaz showed more about Freites or Diaz???

I think this is an interesting question.

I think it showed that Freitas is not interested in boxing anymore, I think a young Freitas would have had to much for Diaz. I honestley think Diaz is getting to much respect for this fight.

I also think this fight is a much better matchup for Katsidis than the Guzman fight as Diaz will actually fight and not run.

I was thinking something along the same line. I do think Diaz still deserves his props though. Stylistically you might be right in saying Diaz gives Katsidis a better chance to win as they will meet in the centre of the ring. I guess it will come down to who can enforce their will on the other. Should be a good fight but if you were putting money on it, it would have to go on Diaz at this stage...

That would be huge! He is up against some stiff US opposition in the purse bid though...

According to Katsidis' trainer Brendon Smith, both parties have agreed to have one more bout before fighting each other in a title match.
Smith said 26-year-old Katsidis would defend his title on July 21 on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins-"Winky" Wright fight at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas.

Katsidis to fight Czar Amonsot on the Winky-Hoppy undercard. From Guzman or Diaz to Amonsot - Katsidis' stateside debut sure crapped out, didn't it?
